So the basic story here is that his scientific discovery is that if you piss people off and they try to get back at you they're the jerks...uh huh...great science...

Also FYI to those who are saying things like "hes only playing the game" or something along those lines in his defense. City of Heroes/ Villains PVP wasn't really a big part of the game for a good period, hell even when players did get to fight each other it was boring and many people didn't even bother. This was partly due to the nature of Heroes being out first (no Villians to mow down) for a while and people tailored characters to PVE. PVP really came out of no where and characters that could actually be successful in PVP had to be specifically tailored for PVP, this often led to a single person completely rolling every other player in sight. While he was technically "playing" the part of Heroes vs Villians, the community (at least when I last played) was not really geared around PVP, instead people played for the PVE.
Thus his acts really aren't that justifiable, its like saying hey I'm gonna start a bunch of shit with people and then see what happens, and keep fucking with people until they decide to do something about it, then I'm gonna play victim and cry foul.
You never have to enter the PvP maps in CoH/V so your argument holds no water. If you want to fight, go into PvP. Otherwise don't.
When I played CoV I'm pretty sure there was no neutral ground for villains to go and chat with friends on the heroes side unless you were in a PVP area. People didn't go to fight they went to chill with their friends, thus my argument still holds true (which is not really an argument of a statement of the events that I experienced during my playtime.)
Then play on the same side, Hero's and Villains shouldn't be friends. That's against the whole point of the game.
So in the entire history of comics/movies/cartoons etc heroes and villains have never joined forces or been friends...yup that argument of yours, looks a bit leaky...
And like I said the game started as PVE, so saying the entire point of the game is PVP isn't true.

That's a goddam tragedy right there. Being tracked down and hunted and abused for playing the game the way it was supposed to be played
this is why i dont MMO. because if I was treated like this, i would get a hold of the bastards addresses, get my Jason costume out of my closet, and strap on my machete and chainsaw. there would be pain. oh god, there would be pain.
These people suck. and should be beaten.

People are jerks on the internet because there are rarely, if ever, any serious consequences.

Talk shit online and MAYBE you get an account suspended or banned. Say the same stuff IRL to the wrong person and he might rearrange your face.

Agreed. I'll play the game correctly just to piss off as many of those **** waffles as I can. You know, troll them.

Some MMOs are so poorly made that the main goals of the game are boring or not productive. Take the pvp area in WoW, Alterac Valley. Blizzard put a good amount of time making all of these special events and quests, but no one does them because it's easier to just run straight through everything and kill the enemy leader. This problem has been corrected in newer areas though. My point, when the point of a game is counter productive, things like this will happen when someone tries to play the game how it was meant to be.

There is. "Pocket D" which I think has been around as long as CoV (or damn close).

However, people would go into PvP areas and form groups for 1v1 fights in a limited area that didn't necessarily involve good vs evil factions and did allow flexible starts, stops, switches, rematches, etc. (Some say they should go to the Arena, which they could, but the counter-argument is that the arena has unwanted overhead.) If you teleported someone out of their fight circle it would be highly annoying to them and everyone else around. Which IMHO overrides however much he loves pissing them off.

Then there are badge hunts and special mission escorts. And a particularly assy trick (officially considered bannable by the GMs) is teleporting someone into the other faction's combat-free area, at which point auto turrets one-shot them. All kinds of things that vastly override his sense of "I'm supposed to mess with you, deal with it."

The bottom line is that someone who deliberately annoys people just because they can is a twat online or off.

On some level, yes, the people were jerks to treat him like that.

On the other hand... he built a character very explicitly around griefing people, and did so in a very nasty way. I haven't really played CoH, but from my experience in WoW, I can tell you I'd rather be killed in-zone than be somehow teleported to a different zone. Yes, he was using game mechanics, but at the same time it seems as though he would move into high-value zones, park there, and lock the other faction out.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the players asked him politely to stop, and were ignored. He was playing the game pretty explicitly to piss people off, and while the level of response he received was inappropriate, he shouldn't really have been surprised that he'd be treated as a dick when he was acting like one.

Finally, his actions probably had direct, negative repurcussions on his own side, as well... again, using WoW PvP realms as a baseline, a lot of people who get ganked by a high-level character will respond by hunting down one or several lower-level characters of that faction and ganking them in turn.

Were the people online dicks? Yes. Did he perhaps go out of his way to draw their ire? Definitely.
Sums up my thoughts perfectly.

So... He's a griefer that exploits glitches, and he continued to grief and exploit glitches, and the second anyone started getting angry, he ran to the mods? Sounds like a **** to me. No, "it's for science" is not an acceptable excuse.

As for all of you going on about how all MMO players must be arseholes because they got angry at a griefer, well, I was going to write something smart, but the idea that this prick can get payed to grief has got me angry so I'll just say fuck you all.

I agree totally. If you piss people off they retaliate, in this case it was extreme but not unexpected tbh

He's a griefer and a douchebag. To the max.

He intentionally, repeatedly griefed people by using his teleport power to teleport them into instakill NPC guards.

You grief and insult people and people get angry. And this moron got PAID for this "research"? Unbelievable waste of money.

I am confused he went and acted like a jerk then writes a paper on it when people got pissy with him? I am sorry but the guy was being a twat and a self righteous one at that. Yes some people over reacted but you know what so did he.

Having played CoH for some time I can say that on the whole it has a fairly nice community, sure not every one is nice but the fact people rarely played any AT exclusivity makes for a more relaxed community on the whole. Sure there are people like the one who wrote this paper but they are fairly rare.

Okay I play City of Heroes and if that guy had done his thing to me I would of smacked his head. And he gets paid to do this? Where's the justice in the world. Oh and of course MMOG players are jerks, we're playing games when we could be outside curing disease and have social contact with people. Duh.

I hate MMOs. If it's MY game I want to play it MY way, and if I want to kill you and am capable of it, I think I should have that right.

This guy is great. He proved that MMOG players are jerks, something that nobody succeeded to prove, but most knew anyway.

Mabye I'm just weird but am I the only person here who thinks it would be awsome to be hunted down by a bunch of cunts who take a game way to seriously?
(hurr durr double post)

I was thinking the same thing, at least in the game world. I think it would be loads of fun to have an entire in game world out to kill me. However, once they start spray painting my cat or leaving angry messages on my answering machine, then I would be a little pissed.

I ran into more morons/jerks in heros/villans than any other MMORPG I have played so far at this point.
Still I love that game, thankfully a new City of heroes is coming out for the consols called Champions online. As long as it doesn't cost extra money to play I will buy it for my 360.

I'm surprised at what people reported about him, though, now Twixt has become my hero. A hero that can teleport other people would be so fun to mess around with. That ability alone makes me almost want to pay the monthly fee to try that game out.
