Still no cure for cancer.
You sir have mad a good point, why bother telling us stuff that we already know. Oh, btw I am rather large but I'm not depressed or a loner. If all the effort to that they use to tell us the same thing over and over again, as well as the funding, I'm pretty sure we could have found a cure for cancer that does not require mass hair loss.

The study was probably flawed by not distinguishing the types of games played, such as Wii Fitness vs. Warcraft. etc. There should have also been a multivariate analysis to adjust results for age and type of game. Many lonely widows and widowers might be gaming after the death of a spouse to have a way of interacting or have accepted Wii Fitness as a good exercise regiment for themselves.

Clearly for some people it is obvious the conclusions of the research are true, but without a true control group, that evidence is mostly anecdotal and not scientific. I know one son had a friend like that who might as well be living in a game, but other just enjoy game playing like my father would of if computer games had been around when he died. He even invented some board games to be sold as inexpensive travel games for children, but that was never how he made his living and he didn't bring the games to cocktail parties.

It's official, scientists are idiots.
Funny this crap is coming from people who spends their lives watching other people live their lives. How many scientist at that place are "in shape" anyway?

Did they really need science to come to this conclusion?
They're idiots, I'd love to know what study they conducted to reach this conclusion.
All the gamers i've ever known are far from fat, depressed, or "Losers" in the traditional sense.
If they based it upon WoW users, well no wonder.
Developers hate it (obviously not Blizzard) and it is not a game, it is a void passing itself off as a game that slowly but surely begins to eat away at your time, your body, your life, and your social life.

Thank you scientists.. I guess.. I'll just go back to my life as a none depressed skinny person that still plays games.

Edit: Or well to be honest, I USED to be depressed, I turned to gaming and meet hope for humanity on the internet(As in I found people who wern't complete idiots while still not being girls, not that there's anything wrong about them but I was like 10-12 xD) and now I'm happy.
Dude, the two of us can't exist. I am a skinny gamer too. I guess I better start getting depressed so I wont fall completely off the world.

Well, Yatzee said it perfectly. When WOW became gaming gaming became a part time job.

dear god, this thread wants to make my eyes bleed.

1. Correlation does not imply causation. they are not claiming there is causation in either direction. it's unfortunate that certain media outlets are trying to spin it either way.

2. Correlation does not imply a personal attack on your way of life. 2/3 of the responses on this thread have been along the lines of "this study's dumb, i play games and i'm not fat and/or depressed." this doesn't mean a damn thing. for all we know, the percentage of obese, depressed gamers may be 10% versus 5% for the non-gaming population. it's not a statement about all gamers or even a majority of them.

3. 500 people are plenty as long as it's a <a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistical_significance>statistically significant sample.

forget freeze tag, some gamers need to learn how science works.

Pfft I can't believe they think that. I'm gonna call bullshit on this one.
I am not fat. I have a life. I enjoy games but I also do other things. Yes I spend a lot of time on my x-box and PC but thats to socialise or to pass time, or relieve stress. seeing as we are working on stereotypes here, I bet the people who "discovered" this are the social rejects who proabably wear huge glasses and have no idea that the opposite sex exists.

I wonder if I could get a grant to identify and measure a correlation between the number of games people play and the number of straws used to consume a beverage. I could spend very little of the money on research, state some bullshit findings, and keep the rest of it as massive profit.

See, I too am smart like a scientist.
