D: are scientists gamers? I FRIGGIN THOUGHT NOT!

what kind of really sh***y conclusion is this anyway? i think science has lost it(but really, when did science have it!)
I agree, I'm a little over weight, but not enough to be "obese" I have lot's of friends and I'm not depressed. And yeah, scientists don't really know enough about gamers to get a guess like that from a mere 500 people.

I think the idiosyncrasies of the classic stereotyped 'nerd' really portray an unfair example.

It's as inaccurate as claiming that every Christian is a member of the KKK, or that every Muslim is an extremist.

im not fat and not playing makes me depressed , hey are these the same morons who say violent games make you violent ? ... i wish the scientists did something useful instead of wasting time and money on pointless research, how bout world hunger or disease?

I wish those little kids on Halo 3 were loners! Maybe then they wouldn't scream so much.

This study doesn't really prove anything new. What, people who don't go outside are usually overweight? OH NOES!

Now, I would love to say how this study is not applicable in any way, but the results hit me like a slap across the face. Sure, I may be overweight, and I was a loner, but that has nothing to do with video games as much as personal choice.

It's not like people who play video games are forced to sit all day, do nothing, and feel bad about themselves when they gain weight. It's a personal choice.

This is just another excuse for depressed fatties to blame something else other than themselves for their problems, like parents blaming video games for violence when clearly their children had mental issues prior.

What a bogus study.
500 people is such and arbitrary number. It's not an accurate account of the true population.

Hell, at my school, I know of people who play game and I know people who don't and they range from male to female to skinny as hell, (me), to pudgy, (but he plays tennis...), to the jocks on the first floor of the dorm, and EVERYWHERE inbetween.

And besides, I could have told you with just mere conjecture the same thing this study did. But its not fact. Its only an increased chance. Depends on how heavy a gamer you are.

Are you playing everyday? How long every day? What types? Are you getting trapped by story or are you just in a continual loop, playing because you are frustrated or for online multiplayer superiority complex?

Where's Jack Thompson behind this? I know he must be... When will he raise his ignoramous head again?

My body mass index is 16 (thats underweight)http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

videogames(are supposed to) provide relief and im not depressed enough to stop real social activity, but i do question its necessity, especially talking to stupid people, or even hearing them, which is why i only have 2 friends on XBL

and im pretty sure the medical survey was biased and written by a non gamer who wanted to feel better about themselves

Did they consider it being the other way around?
Obese and/or depressed people turn to video games because it provides them with a distraction?

And besides, just because the scientists got an article published about their work doesn't mean they were overly serious about it. Papers don't publish important knowledge, they publish what their buyers want to read. Look to the science that seems interesting and progressive instead.

This is entirely inaccurate of every adult gamer I've ever met.

My theory is scientists sit around listening to jpop all day and just throw their studies together based on common stereotypes two hours before they release them to the public

They make the same mistake as the murder simulator people. Maybe it's not games that make you fat, antisocial or a killer, but fat antisocial killers happen to play more games. To draw conclusions, one way or the other, you need to verify that one condition always happens before the other and there are no external causes for either.

Considering my sociology studies (as much as I tried to avoid that part of my education) mentioned this in about the first month, you have to wonder with what pack of cereal they got their diplomas.

I have a brilliant idea! It seems a lot of idiots on the European road drive old VWs. Clearly those cars make drivers stupid. Let's ban them! Give everyone a fine Lancia and they'll drive like angels.

1. I'm only 60kg, toned.
2. I'm very happy.
3. I'm a European level martial artist! I am winRAR!

Take that, science!

Studies like these always crack me up, along with the general "video games, oh noes!" sentiment so prevalent in media coverage, though I see they at least were more interested in how to make playing games a 'healthy' activity.

And the reason why I find it so darn hilarious? You get exactly the same amount of exercise from sitting on your ass playing video games as you do by reading a good book. Funny how you don't see campaigns encouraging children to avoid reading!

Fuck media and it's constant butchering of science. No wonder people are turning to religion for answers... Here's how a scientist would put it: "This study shows that there is a greater frequency of obesity and depression among 'gamers' than 'non-gamers'." See? "This study", implying that other studies may contradict it, so it's by no means a proven fact. Also, note that the scientist would not say "games make you fat and depressed". Correlation does not imply causation. It could be a coincidence. It could also be that people who are fat and depressed turn to games, as opposed to games making people fat and depressed. A scientist would actually point this out, to avoid giving the reader the wrong idea.

The bullshit in this article is not from "science", but from a reporter who is either writing about science despite having no understanding of it, or is a complete asshole who (probably correctly) thinks that putting it the way he did will sell more papers. People -- never trust "mainstream" media when it comes to science!
