What is it they say? "Correlation does not imply causation?" Sounds about right.

Like somebody else said, it could just as easily be that fat, depressed people turn to video games, rather than games making people fat and depressed.

If anything is causing us gamers to get depressed, it's companies like EA and Activision. Can we please sue them for psychological damages?

I think these imitation moron-like scientists can suck my genuine *ahem* with their imitation science-like research.

I'm neither fat (a few pounds on the jolly side, but I'm over 30 and married a great cook) nor depressed (because I'm over 30 and married a great cook!)

Well I'm not fat or depressed and I'm definitely extroverted.
That "play-like activities" thing is the reason why I don't play games of things that I can do in real life without being killed or getting prison time.
In the end, isn't more a problem with the Wii? It has more "play-like activities" than any other console.

I love when they release studies like this. Anything that pisses off gamers is entertainment to me. When I check the gamer news of the day and find something new that already has several hundred posts about it, I know I'm in for a good day.

I should also point out that gaming is the perfect hobby for people who are introverted by nature (me, for example) and this news flash just in:

INTROVERSION IS NOT A FUCKING MENTAL ILLNESS.

Now then, as you were...

This annoyed me SO much I made a forum account.

Okay, so lets see here:

They surveyed 500 people - millions of people play games.
They surveyed 500 people IN AMERICA - the most obese nation ever.
They surveyed children unsure of themselves going through puberty and 9 year old kids.
They surveyed older people (up to NINETY)which doesn't pain an accurate picture of the average gamer.

We don't know WHY they did the study or what they set out to prove, and we don't know who funded it.

Consequently: this means the study is completely a waste of time.

Geez, inflammatory title much?

Nowhere in the study did it say that "gamer"=those qualities. It said that among self-described "players" these qualities were reported with a fairly high occurrence. Now whether they're related or one causes the other is unknown. Hence their use of the word correlation and not causation.

they surveyed enough people to obtain a statistically significant sample.

the non-gamers surveyed were also American. the gamers were more likely to be obese.

i'm not sure what to say to this. i'm also not sure what it has to do with the results of the study, which found there was a correlation for adults of all ages, not the "average" gamer.

it was funded by the CDC and they were looking for correlations between media use, demographic factors, and health risks. to wit:

The study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Andrews University [http://www.emory.edu/] examined 500 adults aged 19-90, looking at health risks, media use and demographic factors.

I myself can't argue against the fat thing, sadly, I'm a bit overwieght, though I can definitely argue against the depressed thing. Also, one of my friends who I would consider a gamer is very fit and happy.

Somebody get the guys at the CDC to line up outside my house so I can give them a sound butt-kicking. I'm not overweight yet and I will beat it into their brains with my fencing saber.

Science recently said we would lose if the zombie apocalypse happened. Science seems to like proving things we already knew. Perhaps it's less that gamers are fat depressed weirdos, and the fat depressed weirdos are socially awkward and thus more likely to engage in solitary activities, such as gaming.
