Whhhyyy do they keep making these studies? We've already had studies show us that young girls talk more than boys, that video games does not make you violent and some studies have made the shocking announcement that there exist people that are addicted to World of Warcraft.

So y is Chess considered a sport? and therefore are pro chess players athletes?

we need to redefine our words here... its not that what they found out was wrong, its just the english language fails to properly define the terms used me thinks :D

Well, its nice to see that everyones thoughts are confirmed. The only people who will fight this finding are the truly lazy or the "pros" themselves

Ok, scientists! Thats it! Come here, thats right, closer... BAD SCIENTISTS, BAD! DOING SOMETHING GOOD FOR ONCE INSTEAD OF PROVING OBVIOUS SHIT. *Hits scientists*.

It's just getting rediculous now.
The thing is, they occasionally DISPROVE obvious shit, which is, in scientific terms, fucking awesome.

I respect games, but I've never thought gaming could be a sport. It can be a competitive game in the sense that basketball is also a competition and, indeed, a game, but there's a blatant line there, and I don't see why people would find it insulting for video games to not be sports. They're just different.
I don't know. I personally find it amazing that American Football became so very popular, but it's a sport.

I always thought that a "sport" was basicly just an organized comptition. It could be about anything. What makes sports like football and such different is that other people will pay to see the game, make bets on the game, rig the game, etc.

Personally I find some MLG competitions way more interesting to watch then football.

Some scientists have far too much spare time on their hands, I mean fair enough, I bet someone somewhere must have called pro-gamers similar to athletes at some point, and I bet someone else really wanted to find out how much damage can be done by sitting in front of a screen for hours a day(oh wait, been done... many times), but really?

English may not define it well but as said above Greek sure as hell does. Given that the word is a direct romanization of the Greek form rather then being descended from it I figure its fair to use that definition?

University of Essex... I'm embarrassed that I live in that county now... wait I was already... anyway obvious article is obvious. Pro gamers will never be athletes until the controllers change for 1 simple reason, other sports don't neglect your health in the pursuit of 'greatness' =P

We needed a study to tell us this? Lets use our money in more productive ways please?
your avatar is Calvin. You don't really have a right to talk.
:)
What does that have to do with anything?
ever read the comics? Calvin is the king of useless studies and experiments. He is also the biggest money waster.

This reminds me of the time a group of theoretical physicists got bored and discovered that if you rotate a square wobbly table 90 degrees, it will stop wobbling. Of course, this only applies if the wobbling is due to uneven ground.

And that's the goddamn theory of relativity compared to this utter useless assertion of classification.

How profound, no wonder we haven't cured any life threatening diseases lately; science is too busy comparing the health of people in different fields of activity. Though in this case can we all agree that Nascar drivers and Card players aren't athletes? I mean both of those are "sports" which require little bodily output.

Oh well thank god they're doing this as to trying to find a new fuel source, curing cancer or anything like that....

Why can't they spend their time trying to cure cancer instead?
Hey guys, the man who did this research was the "the head of Sport, Performance and Fatigue Research Unit." He's a sports medicine doctor, not a cancer researcher. There is no "they" here, it's A person doing a study on the physical abilities of pro-gamers. He was contracted by an E-SPORTS RADIO PROGRAM.
An E-Sports radio program paid for a study on the health and fitness of pro-gamers? WHY AREN'T RADIO PROGRAMS CURING CANCER?

There is no generic "science" that does all research ever. The fact that a sports medicine doctor did a study on physical fitness in fact has absolutely NO bearing on the progress of ANY field of cancer research. Accept this study as the fluff and common knowledge it is, but stop complaining about how we'll never cure disease because scientists are all wasting their time.
