There's a Scientology church near me and whenever I go near there they always try to make me take a "test" to see if I have an alien mind control chip.
hey! We have something in common.Caliostro said:Let me start by saying that for a good half of my life I was religious. So, the fact that I despise religions is based on factual evidence I've collected through the years and not "just because".

Except donating to the church was never integral to going to heaven. More importantly, it was never integral in discussing religious theory and the ideas behind the religion with the preacher. I'm not saying churches don't use some pretty dirty tactics to get money from you, but most brick and mortar churches only ever get a little money and use it just to operate. Something that seems like it is going to take less of my money seems more preferable to something that blatantly asks me for $10,000 in exchange for the one ultimate truth(installment 1/10,000,000).Back to the overt/covert thing. Most other churches nowadays don't say "you HAVE to give us money!". They go down the "You totally don't have to... Like, you don't HAVE to do any of the things we tell you to at all! ... Off course you'll go to hell and burn for eternity, but it's your call, you know!". Sadly the average person seems far to stupid to see through it, so it works... To my mind it's the equivalent of a "polite" gun-point rape. "Now, I'm going to fuck you. You don't HAVE to let me... But I'll shoot you if you don't... But like, it's your call. Totally!".jboking said:2 - Money. Quite simply, money makes a huge impact on anyone. Your typical church 'asks' for donations and will teach you everything they can about the religion with what that particular church has at it's disposal. The CoS demands a monetary trade-off for knowledge of the religion. No one likes it when someone charges for something you can get free elsewhere.
I have learned from experience and from addressing them as people instead of lesser beings that that isn't always true and that they are completely open to outside thought and are typically either well set in a metaphorical sense of the bible or just open about their religion. There are more logical religious people than there are illogical(of course, by that I mean religious people open to other views).Nono, not ignorant zealots. Just ignorant. And/or Hypocrites. Some are zealots, but that comes with any "fanbase" of any kind really.jboking said:While your answers are good too, they seem far more rooted in the idea that all religious people are ignorant zealots.
And I too have learnt from experience and study that that IS in fact true.
I don't think that is entirely the reason you are an ass. What you said above didn't make you an ass and wasn't practice in mincing words. It was actually very direct and made your point well. In fact, I would say your instances of mincing words are the moments that you seem like the biggest ass in the room. That I am. I am direct and I don't mince words, which will often lead me to be perceived as an ass. C'est la vie, n'est pas?Well, you definitely aren't an ignorant bigot...though you are approaching the "Ass" territory.
I always found this funny, and it was the basis for something I said earlier. Thought you might get a kick out of it.odubya23 said:I have a bunch of currency in my pocket that dissagrees with you.
My thoughts exactly. Just because the other religions/cults are not as small, doesn't mean that they are any less fraudulent or harmful. Just look at most churches and temples, they are littered with gold even when surrounded by massive poverty - wonder where that all came from, and what false promises and threats of burning in this life or the next one after death (!) made those poor "voluntary donors" give up those resources...Caliostro said:Good start. Now time to follow up with the others.

Pretty much sums up what it is and the type of people it contains.
Roganzar said:Oh good, first Scientology goes down then maybe we can take down all the other "religions" and the other religions. Also maybe we can stop Oprah, all that sensless "Green"-insert-whatever-the-hell-here, American Idol and reality TV in general and all the other sensless things treated religiously.
Also, French people, please destroy Christianity, Judism, and Islam every sect that spunoff of them, and then maybe you'll finally get some respect from the rest of the intelligent world or at least me.

Can see we haven't grown past the Holocaust yet. I have no love for Scientology myself, but raising torches and actually demanding blood makes you worse than what you accuse the people you are after. This article frankly has no place on this website, but the editors will be done. I just have to wonder how many of these forum comments saying, 'Down with scientology!' aren't just being sheep in a herd. I have seen so many ignorant and baseless comments in this it frankly scares me that so many would want to act on so little information that they know.odubya23 said:Thank goodness, now we just gotta start chipping away at those crazy Christians, and finally my beautiful United States can once again be safe for secular thought.
Hang them all.
Would think you would know better than to post such an inflammatory article, Andy. If not, I hope you think twice next time. I thought this was a gaming website, not a Anti-religion crusade.Malygris said:Scientology Convicted of Fraud --snip--
T'would be a wonderful place, a world without religion. Especially Scientology.Caliostro said:Fixed.ViktorValentine said:First step in a long road of taking down Religion perhaps? Fingers crossed eh

I thought scientology was against drugs and such.
There's one in Birmingham, where I'm at uni. I live in Leeds and when I saw a tent on the high street offering free e-meter readings, it was the first time I genuinely felt afraid in my home city.Kilaknux said:I don't know about elsewhere, but in London there's Queen Victoria street and Tottenham Court Road, and East Grinstead, which is their main base of operations in England.
