This is hypocritical, how do you differentiate between a sect, cult, religion or superstition

People buy T shirts from the FSM website, the head prophet doesn't even have to work anymore.

Jedism is a religion, people spend millions on their merchandising but George Lucas doesn't get any flak for promoting black and white morality and violence is the solution to all problems way of thinking.

You guys! If Scientology is dying, then Xenu has already won!

Renounce your evil ways! Stand together against the Dark Lord!

I just couldn't stop laughing when I typed that.

This article makes me happy.

My odium for Scientology officially solidified into a rock hard, insoluble nugget after I saw one of their damn commercials, which I admit would have been pretty inspiring if they had come from ANYWHERE but Scientology.

(Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1RaKWS6jb4&feature=related)

I certainly think Scientology should be exposed for what it is; a network marketing company run by unscrupulous Hollywood moguls. Still, I don't know if I'm for eliminating Scientology altogether. I'm torn between my disgust for an organization that takes advantage of people's hopes, dreams, and vulnerabilities to rob them of their time, energy, and hard-earned cash and the perverse glee I get from watching idiots flock to a religion created by a fucking science-fiction author because they need somebody to think for them.

And by the way, Battlefield Earth was a stupid book and an even worse movie. Fuck L. Ron Hubbard. At least get a decent sci-fi author to found your joke religion (I vote for Issac Asimov).

The difference is that (hopefully) everyone who knows of the Noodly One knows that it's a joke. And it's entertaining; Scientology is more like a scary clown.

I thought scientology was against drugs and such.
Well they had to purify their thetan level somehow.

I thought they achieved that with "healthy exercise".

They ask you for thousands of dollars, and tell you not to believe in Mental health professionals.

L.Ron Hubbard fully admitted that he created scientology just for the money, and that he made the entire thing up himself.

Also, he used to hang out with Aleister Crowley, and was a follower of the occult.

I thought to myself, we should ban Scientology. Then I remembered The Crusades, and all the other wars. So I decided to let it go, and maybe it'll go away.

L Ron Hubbard, the founder of scientology, who was wanted by the US government for things such as tax evasion/fraud, was once quoted as saying: if you want to make some real money: start a religeon. gee... i wonder... did he found a religeon and become rich?

a religeon based on dead alien spirits reincarnated into humans today, that uses several cons and persnality tests to get money out of paople, treating their huddled masses like so many retarded sheep in saccloth, and bending over for the wishes of the super rich, stroking the egoes of the rich and famous, those bolth rich, and stupid enough to follow a narcisistic religeon, who'se very FOUNDER indicated was a SCAM before he founded it...

oh... if i have offended any scientologists out there: get over it, better yet: save all the money you spend on tuning sessions on BUYING FOOD FOR YOUR FUCKING FAMILIES

thank you.

It's about fucking time that someone other than Germany pulled something like this off against the "Church" of Scientology. Now if only the U.S. would wake up and smell the bullshit.

A real religion doesn't charge people money for salvation - and by extention doesn't limit salvation to rich people.
Hmm... The Vatican used to do that (I don't know if they still do)... around the time that the early Protestant groups started cropping up.

Scientology must be destroyed before it becomes an official religion...

Christianity and Budhism were like this in the beginning, but people back then were dumb and couldn't destroy the supidity in time, and now, 2000 years later, we still have those religions being shoved down our throats since the cradle...
Um. Well.

I'm a Buddhist, and if you'll allow me to speak for my religion, I would say that we were not anywhere near as batshit insane and cultish at any point in time that I can remember.

Ever.

Just saying.

First step in a long road of taking down Religion perhaps? Fingers crossed eh

I am no defender of religion... but in Christianity, if you want to know any and all information there is to know about it - all you do is go to a church, ask the preacher for a Bible - he will in most cases give it to you free of charge *AND* he will most likely tell you that if there is anything you would like to know about Christianity he would be delighted to answer any questions you have - free of charge.
It'll cost you absolutely nothing, all the info is right there amd there is no secret info that the churches hide from you.

In Scientology, if you want to have access to all information regarding their religion you would have to pay tens of thousands of dollars before even reaching the lower levels of "Operating Thetan" to know the miniscule bits and pieces of what the heck Scientology is all about. It's not until you've spent near hundreds of thousands of dollars that the entire beliefs of what Scientology is revealed to you and that is after years of devotion and display of loyalty and fierce recruitment of others to Scientology.

I mean for Christ sake, Scientology has an entire branch whose sole purpose is to recruit famous and/or rich people to their church. Comparing it to Religion in general is an insult.

There's a bloody huge difference between religion - and a cult; thus why France has this particular stance on Scientology.

Remember that.
Actully this is an alterd quote, Cailostro Changed it from Scientology to relgion. Very agressive and angry child. Full of youthful exuberance but a we bit to agressive in his statments.

Oh, I know. I sometimes find ripping troll arguments apart more gratifying then just reporting them, though.

EDIT- On another note, those thinking 'Scientology really isn't that bad' should really take a look at www.xenu.net. I just started reading it thanks to a link another user posted earlier in the thread. You know what they say, real life is more disturbing than fiction. Or something like that.

Man Pennywise freaked me the hell out. My fault for seeing IT when I was 6.

Just wondering; the anti-theists here aren't against believing in something in general, are they? Because I can understand disliking a religious facility, and overall organization, just so long as you don't think you have anything against someone's beliefs, no matter how bat-shit insane you think they are. Just saying. Now practices; there are hazy pasts for a lot of things, but what can you do but modernize? I'd share religion being bound by basic laws and all, but, to people that go on about the Crusades; what can we do about that now? If we could go back in time and fix it, we would, but then it wouldn't have happened and we'd never need to go back in time which- *divided by 0*

As per Scientology; heheheh. Oh that made my day. Even if they can pay it off with their bazillions of dollars, this little scandal doesn't put them in the best light, does it?

I happily second this.

With regards to this thread I am sick of everyone making religion sound so bad just because a few religious people are assholes. Using the kind of logic in this thread I could say all atheists are ignorant bigots and that I wish for atheism to end. I won't though because I know that the ignorant people who posted their inflammatory remarks are but a small minority among atheists and that most atheists are still good people.

The lesson here is as follows.
Avoid making such mean generalizations about large groups of people based on a small sample of the whole population.

OT: Given all the crimes Scientology commits here in the U.S. I really wish more people would publically denounce it. Cost it what little public support it has left. Then when the business/religion of Scientology stops bringing in it's millions of dollars then perhaps scientology will stop spreading.

All right, I may be an Atheist, but I don't generally condemn ALL religions, or even any religion as a whole. Scientology doesn't count as a religion because it is much more akin to a business scam or a cult depending on how you look at it. And even though it is a popular target, I don't despise Catholicism... as a whole anyway. The actual Catholics, I don't have much of a problem with them. I do, however hold a grudge against the Vatican. Again, I'm not necessarily condemning the individuals who are currently within that group, but the organization as a whole. I hold a grudge against the Vatican, because, as an ORGANIZATION, the Vatican is responsible for countless crimes against humanity, all committed for its own benefit. And while the individuals involved aren't involved in these crimes directly (unless they are committing new ones), they are accountable BECAUSE they still benefit from all of the torture, blood, and death that went on in the past. So the LEAST I think the Vatican can do is to release the contents of its "Vault" (the one with that reportedly holds a lot of scientific discoveries, works of literature, and other items of great importance) to public museums around the world.

Now, back on topic...
Again, I don't hate Scientology, it just irritates me that something THIS ridiculous could get ANY shred of credibility AND get THAT much money so quickly. However there is at least one individual Scientologist that I do hate... Tom Cruise. For other reasons that add up to him being a colossal moron.
