Scottish Independence

In Scotland, the main argument I've heard against independence is that we get money from England, and that we'd have trouble surviving without it. I think that's a crappy reason; plenty of nations smaller than Scotland are sucessful, and we'd be members of the European Union, have the Euro as currency, and still have considerable oil reserves. If we couldn't make it under those circumstances, then there's something wrong with us as a country.

If Scotland is to remain part of the UK, it should be because we want to be; not because we can't afford not to be. But from my experience, the only people who really want to be part of the UK for reasons other than money are Unionist protestant types who wave the Union Jack at football matches. I'm originally from the North-East of Scotland, which is far more pro-independence than the rest of Scotland, so it could be that colouring my judgement, but I've never met a Scotsperson who wants to be part of the UK for reasons of brotherhood to our southern neighbours, save those who have a historical/religious prejudice for doing so.

So under current circumstances, I think Scotland should become independent. However, in the past, Scotland and England have worked together as part of the Union for mutual benefit, and without many of the hard feelings on both sides that exist now. If we could get back to that, I'm fine with staying in the UK.

As a non-nationalist Englishman, it's up to the Scottish people to decide. If the referrendum passes, then that's fine by me, but I can't really see what benefits it will bring.

speaking as an englishman, i don't want them. they contribute virtually nothing outside of shit football teams, they want independence and hate us anyway. why should we pay for them when they don't want to be part of the UK?
i mean, they're statistically the worst small country in Europe. and we want to keep them why?
This is the attitude that lets there moron nationalists gain support, contribute nothing? Our north Sea oil revenues per year are one of the biggest contributors to the uk you want to talk tax voids all we have to do is point to that old hag we shill out year after year for and all she amounts to is a glorified figurehad. And what do you expect we count for around what 8% of the countries population? yet you expect us to match a country nearly eight times our size financially? And lets not talk about whos taking money from whome which part of this island has the largest percentage of illegal immigrants? Its not even bloody comparible.

I hate nationalists in general but I hate sweeping generalisations and ignorance far, far more. I'll happily remain part of the UK but shove your pretentiousness right up your arse.
Well said, I was going to try and argue about the oil, but I feel your argument had everything mine could only have dreamed of.

Which is still at war with Russia technically.

If the Scots want independence via a referendum then fine they can have it but since they get considerable amounts of money from the central UK government, would have to wait at least 2 years for EU membership, having their central bank owned by the UK government, no concept of territorial waters or the treaties signed for the division of North Sea oil along with infastruction and utilities being owned mostly by the UK government, I can't imagine it would be a nice place to live.

I'm gonna stick my scottish neck above the parapet and get stuck in...

Scottish independence is a lovley idea and i think the SNP is doing a half-decent job.
Scotland has got a good economy (well...under normal circumstances it does..) and is self sufficient in power.

BUT! If we leave the union, the scottish government has to start taxing and won't be able to make all the lovely social policies such as free prescriptions and free bus travel for the elderly. It sounds a little cruel, but if Scotland remains in the union, it can continue to mooch off England...

fuck you, the fact is that the scottish take in far more resources than they supply. it's a fact. but what really riles me is that every country in europe gets free university in scotland except one. which is it? that's right, England. the fact remains that your shitty little nation wants nothing to do with us but is willing to get our financial support. if you want idependence you can have it. and paying for the queen (which none of us like doing) doesn't ake up for the relative lack of contribution form scotland

oh yeah, i'm not a nationalist and fuck you for jumping to that conclusion. i'm pro-european union, pro-immigration and don't really mind illegal immigrants or eastern europeans coming here. hell, i'm even half welsh and support the welsh rugby team. i just hate the fucking scottish, or at least ones like you who feel hard done by by being part of the UK when you get nothing but advantages from it. the fact is that without us you'd be far worse off, so quit complaining.

Considering that Scotland gains more money from taxes, per population, than England, it wouldn't really benefit Scotland. That said, I live in England, so it would benefit us, so you can have your independence
