In Scotland, the main argument I've heard against independence is that we get money from England, and that we'd have trouble surviving without it. I think that's a crappy reason; plenty of nations smaller than Scotland are sucessful, and we'd be members of the European Union, have the Euro as currency, and still have considerable oil reserves. If we couldn't make it under those circumstances, then there's something wrong with us as a country.
If Scotland is to remain part of the UK, it should be because we want to be; not because we can't afford not to be. But from my experience, the only people who really want to be part of the UK for reasons other than money are Unionist protestant types who wave the Union Jack at football matches. I'm originally from the North-East of Scotland, which is far more pro-independence than the rest of Scotland, so it could be that colouring my judgement, but I've never met a Scotsperson who wants to be part of the UK for reasons of brotherhood to our southern neighbours, save those who have a historical/religious prejudice for doing so.
So under current circumstances, I think Scotland should become independent. However, in the past, Scotland and England have worked together as part of the Union for mutual benefit, and without many of the hard feelings on both sides that exist now. If we could get back to that, I'm fine with staying in the UK.
