Ok so yesterday my mum fell off a chair she was balancing on (don't ask) and landed next to my xbox360. And guess what? The 360 decided that the small jolt was enough to put a nice deep circular groove about 2/3rds around my 4 day old game. Great. This is the 3rd game this has happened to although the first two were my fault, I kicked the xbox over from a vert position.

The good news to this is I found a technique that rendered the disc playable again. First I used an old toothpaste method I had heard of before. Rubbing the toothpaste on the disc as an abrasive takes off a layer of the plastic coating rendering the initial scratches less deep or that's the theory anyway. Doing this has worked on one previous disc but alas not this time. The technique that worked this time involved, yes you guessed it, rubbing a freshly cut banana, followed by the skin over the scratched surface, I then rubbed it with a soft cloth from the inside out, dried it with a hairdryer and then cleaned off the banana residue with window cleaner and a cloth. It really worked :D now I can play my £40 game again after installing it to the HDD.

So have any of you experienced the frustration of scratched discs? What did you do to solve it? Did it work? How do you prevent the xbox turning your precious games to drink coasters and frisbees?!

Disclaimer: Attempt these methods at your own risk, only attempt on games/dvds unplayable in the first place to avoid disappointment.

Yes, I have experienced the frustration. I bought a game off a friend, to find a massive gouge in the disc. I went and asked for my money back, and for a while, he refused, but he eventually caved. I wasn't happy, but then went to buy the same game from Amazon for a cheaper price anyway.

wow, if that worked, then I'll have to remember that for possible future use, instead of paying ($£)2-3 at a shop to get it fixed.
And thanks for mentioning HDD, you reminded me that I need to remove OF:DR from it now that I've taken that game back. then I can put Borderlands on. :D

ring ring ring ring banana phone!

No, but seriously what inspired you to rub a game disc with a freshly cut banana?

I think you should just take better care of you're equipment all together to avoid these situations from happening.

And "don't ask"? What the Christ was your mom thinking balancing herself around expensive hardware?

I rubbed everything on it! It wasn't working anyway so I figured what the hell.
Although I wasn't picking things at random I did some research, but it should be said that most of the 'fixes' you find online will make things worse. I even saw a youtube video saying put it in the microwave among other things!

True but 360s are ridiculously sensitive it would seem. My mum was apparently trying to get something out a high cupboard, careless around my stuff? Yea I said the same thing.

I remember many disks snapped in half and scratched to oblivion when I was a console gamer, that feeling of intense loss. Now I'm a PC gamer, and I back up all my games with No-Cd Cracks! Happy!
oh i always stuck those pieces together with duct tape then smeared them in banana cream to make them work flawlessly again!

I bought one of those commercial resurfacers, which has worked well so far. But I'm making note of the banana for the day when that fails.

Good call, definitely the best option. Im not sure if they offer that service in the UK, maybe someone else will know. Also I was very impatient to get it fixed that I couldn't wait till Monday.

Gamestation couldn't fix TF2 but then again that scratch was deep!
Was it your standard circular scratch that you get from the xbox itself? If so my method hasnt made any of the discs I tried it on worse, you will get lots of small scratches going in straight lines outwards but this doesnt affect how the laser reads the discs. Reselling them might be a problem afterward I should add.

I have heard Brasso works but if the scratch is to deep I doubt it anything can fix it. Then again I have never had any of these home remedies work for me.

And I can't see why they wouldn't offer the service in the UK (as long s they have Blockbusters). The amount of money they lose in lost rentals since people think those disks are frisbees or something and they can make a bit of profit by charging people to fix thier own discs. They would be foolish not to offer it worldwide.
