even if they took it back to a 2D gameplay, it wouldn't fix the fact that theyre going to incorporate a terrible story and voice actors again. i tried renting sonic unleashed, and i felt like they had dropped the ball. sonic used to be about going fast - that's it. Not turning into a werehog (which by definition doesn't make sense, as 'were' means 'man', so sonic would then be a man-hog). they just need to drop sonic - let it stay in the past as a classic. don't ruin it anymore than it already has been

Since the introduction of Tails, Sonic has failed horribly. They should have stuck with side scrolling.

Don't kill or axe him, that's for sure. Sonic himself is perfectly fine.

As long as new characters stop turning up for one game just to never be seen again, the games should continue nicely. The next game, running levels similar to the ones from Sonic Unleashed in 2.5D should definitely make an appearance. The plot? Maybe a reuse of "Eggman is being evil and putting animals in robots"? People seem to be liking that one. And of course Sonic should be pulling away from gimmicks. That might get a few people to return as fans.

So you're saying that Sonic has had only one good game? Tails appeared during the side scrolling games. Sonic 2, in fact. I quite like him as a character. Though his voice tends to be a bit too girlish. (Probably because the VA is a girl, duh...)

Since the introduction of Tails? You do know that he was first introduced in Sonic 2 don't you?

Yes, and your point is?

What everyone else has said: Kill the hedgehog.

That, or at least stop giving in to furries who demand at least one new StH game every year. (Fuckin' furries...)
Taking a shot at irony? Or hypocrisy, I don't know what to call it, as it was probably intended.

How did the introduction of Tails even slightly ruin Sonic games? Tails simply allowed a second player to be playing. And it was still a side scroller.

I'd like to see a Sonic CD "re-imagining" with the day-time levels of Unleashed. Seriously up until we saw the werehog level Sonic Unleashed looked good.

You want an additional gimmick? Time travel. 3 different periods that are copy+ pastes of each other with minor changes make it so you can free transfer between them and you need to, to progress and you have yourself a game.

You know what, it's simpler then that. Is Sega just made Sonic unleashed all daytime levels, then every sonic fan would declare it the return of sonic even if it was 6 hours long.

Please tell me you don't think every Sonic fan's a furry.

As for the topic, I still think Sega's in denial. I haven't given up on Sega just yet thanks to the fact that they helped make Condemned, but seriously, they need to let Sonic go.

Off a cliff.

Overlooking lava.

Give anything enough time and it will turn around. The question is how long will it take for the hedgehog to change from a cheap whore on the street to a high class woman of please that will give you the ride of your life.

the problem is that the sonic games have never really had anything decent to begin with. the only memorable sonic game i remember were "sonic the hedgehog" for the master system and "sonic 3D" which i played on the PC.

the point of the former game wasn't to just run extremely fast through whatever loops and hoops that may have been in a stage; no, it was a genuine platformer. you fell into pits you had to get out of, you were running around in a jungle riddled with difficult ways to cross and you got into a flooded labyrinthine temple, where you had the added constraint of fighting for your life as you passed through under water.

the classic sonic was all about jump puzzles and timing; it had challenges that would make you want to play it (i still hold the original sonic's end boss as one of the most difficult bosses in any game) because there was a high risk associated with the game. you'd die a lot, but you'd feel like a champion when you managed to complete a challenge. even with the switch to 3D in sonic 3D, the team managed to maintain the proper challenging elements. this just goes to prove that 3D sonic is perfectly doable; the problem is that the developers have just been caught up in making the games too shallow. read below:

the latest of the sonic games i've had the mild displeasure of getting my hands on was sonic rush for the DS. the problem with this game was that it became extremely boring and tedious after a while. it felt like work, not like entertainment. instead of having a game challenge you, it was all about speed and how you could beat the level in the fastest time. time trial is not proper game play; it should be used only as an additional feature for hard levels where you want to have bragging rights. this, in my experience, was not the goal of the sonic games.

as an aside, the boss segments in between the various worlds, were actually entertaining. they featured a shadow of the colossus sort of mechanic, allowing sonic to battle various constructs by jumping on top of them - all in 3D. it made me wish they'd make a sonic game just with boss battles.

Unbelievably easy. Use big development (which they should have) to create a large, beautiful 2d classic. With modern technology and professional development staff they should be able to create 20+ hours of interesting (mulitplayer?) gameplay in a traditional 2d frame.

Use the fake paint style like Braid and it'll look amazing!

Use some unusual 2d techniques. Have the multiplayer race function on full levels from Sonic 2 back. Etc.

But is it really that hard to say "Right, let's make a good game this time"? Is it really so hard to make a Sonic game free from poorly-executed gimmicks other than "running really fast"?
Yes, Mr Funk. Yes it is, at least for them. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were perfect examples of how far the franchise can go in 3D without sucking. The only real direction they need to go now is 2D to regain some face, and actually make a great game again. I've questioned whether or not Sonic can actually survive on the 3D plane, because even though SA1&2 were great, the defining features of those games were features that were superior on the 2D versions.

And it's funny that people only see sonic as the only franchise that's ailing when it tries to do something different, Megaman is exactly the same, if not worse up to M9. Megaman 9 is an amazing game, but it's the only good game he's had in 15 years, because they brought him back to his roots, the only place where they can make something good of him. And guess how many games he has? Just guess [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mega_Man_games].

120. Yeah.

Either way, they should accept where Sonic's strengths are, and stick him in another home console 2D iteration. His two best games were Sonic and Knuckles, and Sonic CD. They were perfect, why can't Sega see that and bring those back? Bring out the odd experimental Sonic game every 2 or so years, and keep the classic like ones coming.

EDIT: Though I should point out that Sonic has more, he has more games in 3D that were actually successful.

Would a 3D platformer really be so hard to make? If it only had two dimensions (left and right) and only had characters like Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, then I'm sure it'd make a good game. Add a decent story in there (something about Dr. Robotnik stealing birds infused with emeralds to call a big bird that had swalloed the master emerald so he can become the ultimate dark Super Dr. Eggman) and I'm sure it'd be getting at least 8/10.

3D platformers with two dimensions are insanely fun, as Trine has proven. And I still have hope for Sonic, but they need to look back on what made the franchise so fun rather than trying to introduce new things. Cola is nice, and only recently they tried adding a little lemon/lime; they didn't start mixing in tens of different fruits that were practically the same as each other, only different looking.

Come on Sonic Team, get back to what you did great; simple platformers with super speed and Sonic as the one and only main star!

I can agree that Sonic games haven't been all that good the last few times, but I still think that Sonic Unleashed deserved more credit than it was given.

I've given up all hope on the games. I get my Sonic fix from the comic series by Archie, which is still going strong with over 200 issues. Much like the way Star Wars tends to be more awesome when George Lucas isn't in charge, the Sonic the Hedgehog universe is much more entertaining and Werehog-less when Sega isn't in charge.

They've managed to take just about every character from the games I hated (except Cream, who thankfully has yet to make an appearance) and given them a purpose in the main story. The characters develop! Shadow smiles once in a while! Tails no longer is completely useless! You want a good Sonic experience? Read the comics.

The only way to fix this is to take a shotgun to Sonic's little rodent face and every one else in the universe. Starting with that annoying Cream the Rabbit.
