The basic functionality of the Windows Desktop is still there. Windows 8 will still allow you to install applications like LibreOffice, Steam, BitTorrent, and other open source, free applications. It's just the implications of the Windows Store making MS seem more like Apple with each passing day.

And the fact that you said that Windows 8 treats people like idiots shows me that you haven't tried the OS. Go to MS' site, grab the Release Preview and at least try it in a VM. Windows 8, in my opinion, strikes a balance between idiot-proofing and letting the user have choices. It's just hidden under the funny interface known as Metro.
I dont see how the basic functionality can exist without there being a start list (what we have now is abomination, see the picture). or if you use it, see your computer.

Maybe it is a balance between choice and idiot-proofing for you. that only puts you on the idiot side. for smart users it is far from being open enough.
Seriuosly, noone uses bittorrent now. that program is awful. but i get your point. and yes, peopel can install it, as long as microsoft fancies licensing them. oh your trying to run our office out of business? no license for you, bye bye to all your users. MS is know to have pulled this type of stuff before. giving them the tools to do that is the worst thing in OS industry.

Okay. Now explain why.
you go on a lengthy explanation of how you find it comfortable, forgetting to mention that this can be as easily done on the windows 7 and thus this is the betterment of your settings, not of different OS. Or are you one of those people that dont know how to change anything? that would fit with suspicion a bit more to the top of the post.

Uh, that's distortion right there. If it works for him, calm down. If it doesn't work for you, relax and don't use it.
Say you like to keep a lot of things on your desk. a guy comes in and puts a heavy object on the desk that leaves no space for you to put other things. the result is that you are forced to keep less things on your desk. the guy is praising the heavy object for being there not allowing how to have more things on the desk. i dont see this as an advantage.

Okay, I'm getting sick and tired of this. It's not going to hurt gaming. Windows 8 is going to do nothing to gaming. You can still run Steam and all of your other games through the desktop portion of Windows 8 and here's a picture of me doing so;

Can we please stop bitching now that Windows 8 is out in the market?
Yea, you're right, it looks exactly like my windows 7! Only lacking the convenience of the start menu, which i dont really think NEEEEEDS to be removed.

But HEY, you got better CheckDisk/Disk Repair in windows, so... totally worth it, right?

I like how Microsoft is getting shit for doing what Apple has been doing on iOS since the first iPhone. They even dictate what programming language you can use.

Right now I use Windows 8 and it works fine. Steam works, all my software works, I only went to the Windows Store to download Minesweeper (I like that game, okay?) and the OS didn't punch me in the face.

It sounds like this guy is jumping on the bandwagon. I understand that people fear change and removing the Start Menu they know for 15 years or more is a Big Thing, but people seem to complain even before they spent one day using it.

There are other problems, which are more to the point, like how Chrome will open a different session whether you open it from the Desktop or the (not-)Metro home screen.
Mind if I ask which Programming Language?
Objective C and C++ I believe? Maybe they changed back their policy since then? Point is Microsoft doesn't care what programming language you use, you don't even have to use .NET if you don't want to. I think that should count for something.

Interesting since Objective C I thought was for Apple.

I'm not sure what they're all getting on about, win8 is the exact, same, thing. Have you used Win7? It's the same as Win8, no start button? Move your mouse to the SAME CORNER it does the same thing. I got it for cheap and didn't have any 'adjustment period', it works exactly the same. And if you're complaining the start menu is replaced by a full screen thing then I'm sure you've never tried it because it's the same thing just expanded with more abilities

Closed platform what? You can get steam, origin and run it just like any other windows OS, it still has compatibility modes and all that fun stuff.
