Yeah, I've heard this one quite a bit back a year or two ago. People in my class didn't take it very well when me and my best friend started to talk in English about games and anime during recess... We would usually either ignore the person who said so, or tell them that we both got lives and that they should just stop listening if it was bothering them. It's not like they were a part of the conversation or anything, so I fail to see why they should find it annoying.

It's not like I give a damn anyway about what "the normal folks" think anyway. xD

Never been called it but have heard it been said, usually by idiots that couldn't actually come up with a decent insult against the person.

It's a stupid insult.

Everyone has a life, some decide to throw it away though.

when most of it revolves around stuff like "Your phone costs 10$ per month plus .10$ per minute. Plot the graph and interpret the gradient." Seriously, THAT is what I have to do in my 5th semester?
While I'm not sure what "gradient" in that context means, I could probably do that!

Yes, many times, I either respond joking saying "Well I am living, so I do have a life" or I just don't respond.

Its mainly eithe rbecuase I know somethnig about a video game that they didn't know. Most time's its something simple...

American high schools sound so cruel, I could never imagine anyone saying something like that to someone's face where I come from.

Not because of video games, I think. Mainly it's said by someone very insecure and seeking to put you down a peg or two for whatever reason. I have had that said to me, by an individual who I wont name. In this case, because it wanted me to feel like a piece of shit, basically. Just say: "Yeah, maybe I should get one. How bout I take yours?..." and just stare at them for a bit.

It meant the slope of the function. Sorry, that was the word used, and our prof isn't a native english speaker. Tho I think gradient is used in mathematics, maybe I'm just mixing things up xD

Yeah i've heard it, but i just say "If i had wanted your opinion, I would have given it to you. Now leave before i stomp you into the ground." I'm a very large & intimidating geek, so they mostly shut up & run away.

You get bullied? :(
I'd say the majority of Escapists have been bullied at one point or another. This is more or less a gaming website after all.
LOL now that sir is an overgeneralization.....one that might be true to an extent...

Anyways the only time I've been told that is when I'm in my criticism mode and start talking my head off about literature.

It gets annoying when people shout "Get a Life" just because I have a passion for reading and other events that test you physically as well as mentally.

You sir, have been blessed! American Highschools can be fun, but at the same time a pretty cruel place, seen it happen to a few friends and well if you're not in the right circle of friends people tend to blackball you..

Mainly because I hung out with all types I didn't really get ostracized but damn it is still wrong no matter how you look at it.

When people say that they infer about your social life. Considering the stereotypical gamer is a sheltered recluse they would have trouble adjusting in society. Prove them wrong, make lots of friends in all sorts of places.

All you have to do is find the slope?

Yeah, I could do that easy.

A couple of times, but I just laughed. I mean, what kind of insult is that? Call me an asshole or something, maybe that would hurt my feelings, but I'm pretty sure I HAVE a life.

Gradient makes perfect sense in that context.

OT: I don't get told to get a life, I get told to get a job.

Anyone who uses the phrase is a dick.

I'll let Penn explain why.

I love Penn. He is always so spot on. My favorite is when he compared video games to football.

You could always be a little crazy. Just whip out a knife and say:

"Okay, I'll take yours."

Alternatively, just start laughing at the cliched cheese of the phrase when it's sent your way.

I got called that a few times, yeah. Then puberty hit, I grew tall, acquired a deep voice and started practising martial arts. People left me alone after that.
