Server Screw Up Kills MMO

Japanese MMORPG M2 has been shut down after the game was accidentally deleted during server maintenance.

M2 was taken offline at 8PM on the 21st of October due to a "critical issue" one of the game's main servers. Whatever the problem was, it's kind of a moot point now, because the game isn't coming back. Neither current game operators Hangame nor Sankando, the original developer, could restore the game data, and this seems to be another case of developers playing fast and loose when it comes to backups. That...that's just hilarious! AHHHH HA HA HA! Oh god I can't breathe!! That's the funniest thing I've seen in weeks! An entire game's just up and gone 'cause someone hit the Delete key too soon! Oops! XD

So... Did they delete the game's source code too? Did they have a catastrophic failure that killed off all their source backups as well as the persistent game data? Because if not, they should probably get that shit started again.

OH yeah, I'm sure everyone will be clamoring to get back there. Everyone who just had all of their data wiped from existence are gonna be righteously pissed, and you bet anyone who finds out about this will jump to ANY other MMO first. 'Yeah, Maplestory may be full of screechy, idiotic kids and look overly cutesy, but hey, at least they won't accidentally DELETE MY CHARACTER when I'm asleep. Sign me up!"

Nah, these people are Screwed with a capital S. They could restart the game if they wanted, but ain't no one comin' back after this kind of epic fail.

Wow, I got the feeling from add banners that these Free-to-play Asian MMO games were a dime a dozen, but I didn't know the devs agreed. I mean, there must be multiple people working on programming it, right? None of them had any copies on their machines? Nothing? Impressive.

"no backups" for a online MMO isn't so much a mistake as highly, highly suspicious.

That occurred to me, then I realized that nothing they could actually do could be more damaging to their reputation than "we accidentally deleted the game."

Another reason MMOs are going to start dwindling. They've lost the sense of "virtual real estate"... but they haven't dropped those real estate prices.

You don't get as much for your dollar as MMOs used to give you (back when they had a lot to prove, and still had to earn the right to charge past the first sale). And now they're so short-lived (due to market glut and sub-standard handling) that it's an even worse value.

There are very little things that make me laugh, but this is one of them. As much as i want to think the issue is more complicated than that (from reading different articles about the same issue), Escapist people are pretty accurate, and therefore this screw up was on the level with Rick Perry's awesome Debating tactics(Don't worry if you don't know what i am talking about, the guys if from Texas, so automatically you it's about someone being stupid).
