"It's exactly like drugs or alcohol - once people get addicted, they feel they have to have it. There are always certain people who will get addicted to a drug, and in gaming we estimate it's about 20% to 30% of people," claimed Woolley.

I would very much like to know where he got this information. Maybe then I'll believe him. Also please keep this away from Fox and the Daily Mail. I can only imagine...
Seriously.

Consider the amount of people beaten or killed over drugs or alcohol, and the amount beaten or killed over videogames. Not even close, even though videogames are so popular.

It's bullshit

Holy crap, what a psycho. That's incredibly disturbing.

It's not even an issue of "did video games cause it or didn't they". It's a case of "holy fuck that 15 year old is insane".

FOX News now has more fuel for its "gaming is the shiny devil" fire. The kid is psychotic, not addicted, were it over any other medium he'd be called a psychopath and not a book addict, or movie addict, or couch addict. Yet, since it was possibly for an online game, he's a video game addict and that's the only problem.

Stupid people these days, I swear.

Its obvious what the problem is, they need to stop charging for MMO services. Then this shit wouldnt happen..

Well, I agree with one thing, that kid certainly has a problem. I don't think video games are to blame directly, because otherwise we'd be seeing cases like this in North America, and we don't.

wow, addiction is one thing. But beating a 7 year old girl to death with a rock is just insane. How can people get so desperate that they no longer know the difference between what is right and what is wrong.

Does this surprise anyone? The more people who play video games, the more likely this is to happen. It's only a numbers game really.

There is no link between video games and addiction. But there is probably a definitive link between people with addictive personalities and video games. That is not the industries fault in any way. These people could be addicted to anything at all, it happens to be video games in this case. Then there is the obvious problem here, he is clearly a mentally unbalanced kid. The industry or it's spokespeople should never have to make excuses for stuff like this.

A sociopath that plays games? I bet he also has a religion why don't we link it to that.

Its impossible to be addicted to gaming because it has not addictive qualities. You cannot be addicted to gaming like you would cigarettes. This kid is a nutter with an addictive personality; he could get "addicted" to anything if he found it remotely fun. And by addicted we should say "excessive usage" or something. Because IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET ADDICTED TO SOMETHING THAT HAS NO QUALITIES THAT REQUIRE YOU TO USE IT! Its not like a cigarette or a drug, or anything actually addictive.
Wait, what? Sorry but I disagree with that, of course you can get addicted to games, loads of people are addicted to games, and there are always stories like, for example, the woman who was addicted to farmville and let her child die.

Hell, even I know I am slightly addicted. I know I can get off my ass and do other things, and use my time much better than I currently do now, but I don't. Why don't I make better use of my time? I can't, or it's hard to do so. Granted its not so bad that I am really horribly lazy, or even start murdering little girls for money, but it is a small problem no doubt.

OK EVERYBODY STOP TALKING ABOUT THIS NOW

Escapist take this article down. Make no mention of it. If FOX, the daily mail or the guardian just hears the words "video game" "Murder" and "girl" in the same sentence they will hear it as

"A group of 1000 gamers are committing genocide across Vietnam because they saw it in a VIDEO GAME. we now turn to some fat gamer we picked off the street to defend gaming and our sack of shit expert to tell us how 99.9% of gamers are murdering rapists".

Poor girl...
Still, I seriously doubt that the game itself has anything to do with the boy's mental illness.

I live in Vietnam. This is terrible (ghê quá). Every country has it's problems but it's unfair to blame the game; it's hard to understand the motivation behind this but it's not the country they live in, it's the mind set of the people. MMORPGS are addictive and can lead to this sort of behaviour. It's not the fault of the MMORPGs but the fault of those that take it too seriously.

Well...this sucks.
But there's like 6 billion people alive on the planet. Odds are, a small percentage of them aren't normal. And shit like this happens.
I don't think it's the game's fault.
I blame the brain.

I'm sorry for what she's going through, but equating games to drugs without batting an eyelid damages her stance somewhat.

One most definitely can become addicted to games, not because of inherent addictive qualities in games themselves, but because of behavioral addiction [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behavioral_addiction].

This is sick. If someone was to tell me that this would happen a few days ago then I would ignore them.

It's easy to blame something you vaguely know about. The mother/father probably knew he liked this game, and, hey, maybe even knew a bit about it. The kid probably wasn't right in the head, and there was some other problem. Maybe kleptomania?
