"I am Japanese and thus perpetually unimpressed with my work product." Totally not gettin' old.

Meanwhile, his first stab at SMB2 was so ground-breaking, America wouldn't even accept it, so Nintendo took a TV tie-in game he made and painted it over with Mario sprites. And it's loved to this day.
You were saying, Shige-san?

Lolwut? Have you played the original Mario 2? Groundbreaking? Hardly. It was SMB1, but way harder. They added almost NOTHING. People complain about Nintendo supposedly rehashing things today, but that was easily their biggest rehash ever.

Plus, without Mario USA, there wouldn't be any Shy Guys or Bob-Bombs or plenty of other iconic characters or enemies. Shovelware it was not, despite the what everyone likes to say.

I thought SMB2 (the dokidoki subcon one, not the lost levels) was the better adventure until 64

Hate to disagree with God, but I'll continue to hold that, when regarded in the context of it's time (re: what had come before, what was achievable at the time and applying those same criteria to everything that's come since) SMB3 is the greatest game ever made. It was really where what we now think of as "Mario-style platforming" got perfected - every installment since has basically been adding to that template.
For me that title belongs to Call of Duty 4
