Preventing sick people from harming children: very good.AngelOfBlueRoses said:That's pretty much what I said when I first saw this thread! ...except in an extremely sarcastic tone. Other than that, it was fun reading the posts coming from all of the prudes. Fairly amusing. ...and really sad...
Preventing children from playing how they want and enjoying themselves: bad.
I don't want to live in a place where people are so afraid of being a potential victim that they cover their body from head to toe and never leave their home. If we do that, the predators win. If we do that, we make ourselves and our children a different kind of victim. May as well report everyone that's ever taken their top off at a beach or joined a nudist community--for their own safety, right?
It's also worth reminding everyone here that a child is much, much, much more likely to be harmed by a parent or friend than a stranger, so this "pedo driving by" scenario is pointless. You wanna protect kids? Awesome. Being scared isn't the way to go about it. We get so swept up in wanting to protect our kids from strangers that we don't take the time to protect them from ourselves. It's not nice and no one wants to think about it, but it's the truth, and the longer we ignore it, the longer kids suffer in silence, too ashamed or afraid to speak out 'cause their abuser lives with them or goes to their school or church. The monsters you know, as they say.
Life's too short to be afraid. Teach your kids about stranger danger, tell them to call for help the second anyone, even one of their parents--no matter what they say--touches them on their bikini areas. Get to know the people your kids hang out with. Talk to your kids. But whatever you do, don't be afraid of the world, 'cause kids pick up on it and the more time we as a society spend freaking out, the less fun this life's gonna be and the more scared our kids will be. Do you want kids too afraid to walk to school? Or do you want kids walking to school equipped with the tools and information to be safe? Kids aren't dumb. Teach them what they need and keep the lines of communication open.
Be informed, not afraid.
