Should you be allowed to hurt/kill kids in video games?

I can understand why Beth didn't allow kids to be killed in Fallout 3.

Child abuse of any kind has become our last taboo.

They probably didn't want thier hard work and wonderful game wasted by being banned and shunned by WalMart and other fussy retailers, along with being blamed for every ill of society.

After seeing what happened over Dr Liara's side boob I don't blame any dev for being cautious with thier material.

But how is that any different than a cripple, or someone who is injured and unarmed, or someone who is level 1, when you are level 80, etc. etc. etc.

Well, in Fallout 2 there were those damn kids who tried to steal your stuff at every doorway in the Den, so at one point I just got mad at them and started killing them.

If they're going to let you run down little old ladies, why shouldn't you be able to run down those snot-nosed brats?
Some games already do, just cover it up a little. Resident Evil 4...
Leon throws a knife through a 12 year old's hand, they proceeds to shoot him in the face a whole lot. But just because he's a big mutated mess, I'm sure that makes it alright.
I'm pretty sure Salazar was not a child, just a little person.

It was still fun to fire a rocket into his face though...

The whole problem with killing, well anything, in a game is that either the game needs to be designed to let you either, go on a killing spree, Fallout 3 or Saints row 2 style, or go the Zelda route, aka only killing the bad guys.

What I find annoying is that in games with "Ultimate freedom," you are allowed to kill anyone, except kids, why???? I mean, ain't it as "off messaged" as, for instance, killing Dogmeat and playing with his corpse? Sure it serves no practical purpose, but you can.

Ultimately the only games were killing children should appear are, games like Fallout or Bioshock, in games like these it can serve as a big karma moment and have some impact beyond "just" killing children.

Out of curiosity, why would they?

If they make it so you can murder children, their game will get a higher rating, a lot of complaints, and so on and so forth in that fashion.

Is it really necessary to be able to kill a child in a game? It makes more hassle for the game developers, the retail stores where the games are sold, and the parents who SHOULD be paying attention to what their kids are playing.
Yes, when you can kill everyone but the kids it matters, and why should it get a higher rating because you can kill kids when you can already kill adults? Human as human. They're just a shorter, dumber, more annoying and useless version of an adult anyway.

Yes, they should. And if they don't they should not put kids in games. And if they do, they should not brag about the level of freedom in the game.

People who have anything against killing children in games are sick, it isn't real. Just because some people apparently have trouble discerning between reality and, well, not reality shouldn't mean that the rest of us have to suffer because of it.

And we do get to kill dwarves.

Precisely. The life of a child is of no more value than that of any innocent kind-hearted person, and I've certainly killed a lot of those in Fallout 3 and Oblivion.

Ask Tim Chafer...
We all see what REALLY happens, when you risk a little. Look at pyschonaughts, it was THE most original, and FUN games I've ever played!
Everything today is the same thing, just with new paint.
Developers that don't take risks, usually make the money...
That's why I think they shouldn't take the risk of adding children on the to-kill list.. Y'know?
Also, it depends on the game, and such...

Off course you should be able to kill kids in videogames. Probably not in specifically designed kidkilling-games, but in any open-world-free-choice-game-with-kids there's no reason why you should be allowed to kill any-and everyone as long as they're over 18.

Killing a 30 year old, fine. A 20 year old, no problem. 18 Still fine. 17 off course not you monster... how do you even tell the difference between a 17 and 18 year old in game, do I get to card everyone first? What if it's an old looking 14 year old? Or a young looking 22 year old?

*disclamer* I am a good person but a murder spree is not complete till eveyone is dead.

I think it would be something to have during your rampage through Megaton because after you kill everyone how do the kids survive? I mean do it for humanitarian reasons at the very least...

I would have to say it depends on the game... if said game is a FPS (i.e half life) then no... because it would serve no purpose (except to piss off censors and oversensitive people who can't tell the difference between pixels and real life), since you will invariably be playing a good guy hero.

If said game is a RPG FPS,RTS,Turn based... whatever (i.e. fallout 3, neverwinter nights, fallout2) then yes, for the love of god YES! in a RPG where you are supposed to develop your character(wether hero or villian) through your actions I believe being able to kill children should be an option... because if you are running around killing children chances are you aren't gonna be the savior of humanity.
I think however that child killing should carry a suitably negative stigma, such as in fallout 2 where if you killed a child, you would gain the child killer perk and everyone would hate you.

yes

a really thin reason is that it will give kids th wrong idea that they are invincible to bullets. also, it'd just add to the "fuck this world shit up" option that most players want in a sandbox game.

Yes. I wouldn't kill or hurt children in real life, but... it's a video game. Does it make me more likely to? Does it make it any less abhorrent? No.
