The franchise is called
Street Fighter, yet many fights don't take place on the streets (some parts of
Alpha [mainly
2],
III and
VI especially mostly fixed this), nor are most of the cast actual street fighters. Or they don't have street fighting as their style. The only people who count or are considered actual street fighters are Birdie, Cody, and Poison. Characters like Guy, Maki, and Kimberly are considered "street ninjas". Yet, the other fighters who martial artist in their respective fighting style/discipline aren't afraid to play dirty. Though if certain fighters tried the dirty tactics like they did in their actual tournament fighting or a professional career/sanctioned match, it would get them kicked out, banned, or disqualified.
Makoto for example is a much more grounded/realistic take of an actual Shotokan practitioner. No fireballs, nor spinning kicks, but I highly doubt a punch to the groin or a headbutt would be considered legal in her area of practice or in a more professional karate tournament. At least two moves Dudley does in SF III or IV would be considered illegal in an official boxing match. It's a conundrum that sometimes keeps me awake at night. I've been thinking about this I was a teenager.
Isn't that crazy
