I used the search button and didn't find anything like this so forgive me if this has been done before. Over the past few years I've noticed that I've become more and more like a shut in to the point where I barely leave my room anymore or go outside. Are there any other's like this here on the escapist and if so did you try and overcome it or are you still a shut in? For the record so far I'm still a shut in myself.

I feel a bit like that sometimes, so I force my self to take a walk outside, get a bit of fresh air, and do something without the requirement of a computer.

School and friends are also major reasons I'm not a standard 'shut in' case.

Well that's about the only thing I go outside for, I go for a walk every so often but it seem's like it's harder and harder to do that as well.

I'm a total shut in, especially now that I take my high school classes online, I rarley leave my room, except to eat, or go to the bathroom. As for trying to overcome it, I'm quite happy with my shut in lifestyle.

You need to find reasons to go out. Stay shut in for too long and you become a bit 'weird'. Occasionally at the weekend I'll have done nothing all day and I just go for a run in the evening. Getting that blood flowing around your body is vital.

Plus after a bit of exercise you'll feel better.

You have to push back as soon as possible. If you retreat from the world too much you can find yourself very lost.

I think that's what being a teenager is. Of course, it depends on how active the individual is, but, I've noticed that both the majority of my younger brother's friends, and even his peers tend to spend more or less most of their time playing games.

As for myself, it depends, I have a 9.00-5.30 job, pretty standard I guess, however, beyond this I don't actually go out at all. Live on my own, and don't entertain guests. So, in that respect I am somewhat of a shut-in.

Due to psycological problems I'm a total shut in.
I almost never leave my room exept for food and the thought of leaving my home scares me, that being said I can still force myself to go out If needed and i'm starting to see a counseler about it soon as I know it's not healthy

Hmm the best computer in our house is in the living room, with the 360 right next to it so that's where you'll usually find me when I'm at home. Used to sit in my room alot and never come out unless for dinner but since the 360 is downstairs due to the obviously better tv in the living room I guess not a lot has changed only the location. And of course my mom being able to keep better check on what I'm doing.

Still I don't think I'm one of the worst cases. When I can I go to the mall with friends to grab a snack and hang out a bit with them. Even me being on the computer right now is an exception. I'll explain: On fridays I have 3 free periods in which I usually hang around school with friends. Sure I get bored sometimes but at least I'm more social than when I go home and wait out my free periods there, which is what I'm doing right now.

The worst case closest to me to my knowledge would be my sister. She's in her room all day watching animes and listening to Nightcore. *shudders*
Only comes down for school, to eat, go to the bathroom and when she has to brush her teeth before bedtime. Never ever does she come down on her own choice (at least as far as I've seen), and sometimes when I get back from work and see the lights in her room on I'm a bit worried, as none of us have a clue at what she's actually doing there. That is to say, whether she is just watching animes and listening to crappy music.

I also think it's about to get worse because she asked for a headset-mic for christmas.

Yes, I am. If I have the choice I'll stay in my living room most of the day. But my brother is worse, he only comes downstairs to demand food and bug me. :p

I've got work, college and other responsibilities, but when I've got time off I spend as much of it as I can shut in and playing videogames.

Very true, especially the last sentence. Get out, get involved in things, do stuff. It's really important for your well being to exercise and socialise.

I'm by no means "shut in", but I'm seriously thinking about throwing my PC trough my window, because I'm beginning to neglect my resposibilities at my university.
yep, same. It's just too tempting to go online...

I think with the availability of anything and everything online, becoming a shut-in is gradually growing easier and easier. I used to be a shut-in, only leaving my dorm room to get food, but I've started forcing myself to go out for walks at night, and sitting around in our study room and common area instead of sitting around in my room.

I think your sister may be working at an online sex chat room. Let's hope she doesn't get a webcam too...
Actually she's 14 so I'm guessing no. And anyone smart funny enough to mention child sex chat rooms: don't :)
Although I am worried that she'll do something stupid, as gullible as she is.

If people accuse gamers of being shut-ins (their pale skin untouched by the sun etc.), and it's actually true, is it still a bad thing to say?

Chills, man. Chills, and I think I have to poop.

I used to blame the hyper-advancedness of games for my cave dwelling. Then I realized I was only losing myself in the games like I was because my personal life is a constant disaster and I'm just trying to escape from it.

I hope you're young enough to realize the problem and do something about it. I know a guy who's 42, terrified of women and thinks poker games for the 360 are God's gift to the human race. He's a nice guy and all, but damn. He himself would warn against living that kind of life.
