Sick of Captchas? How About Chess Puzzles?

Well, it would work, assuming you know how to play chess, like you pointed out. And you'd be amazed how dumb people really are. (like students who think the Waffen SS was one of the largest resistance groups in WWII, or, closer to The Escapist, the fortunes movies like Twilight and Transformers make) My point is, you can't rely blind on these systems to work because it involves a skill other then being able to read and write. Plus, like you said, computers are becoming very good at chess, so they could solve them as well.

Never seen the ad based captcha, but since you brought them up here...

Advertisement on the forum is not allowed. Captcha is used to prevent bots from making threads or posting replies that work as advertisement...

The solution is making the users write an advertisement slogan? Yeah, I find it counter productive too, but for a different reason than you.

OT: Sick of Captcha? What about Publisher's Club?
(I hope advertising for this site isn't going to get me in trouble...)

Edit: Considering chess is one of the games where humans can never beat the best computer... yeah, I think I might see a glitch here...

Escapist is the ONLY website where the capchas are often relevant and fun. this is probably the only site where after the update i stopped hatting them. though those advertisement ones or pick a word ones are stupid beyond belif.

P.S. capcha: main chance.

Escapist is the only site where we have to deal with captchas outside of registration. For example, I also post on a much bigger site (NeoGaf) and they don't require captchas despite having many more users and posts per day. They also don't have bots.

So why is it that this relatively small forum needs us to prove we are human every few posts?

They should require you to describe the meaning of "love".

That's something a robot can never do.
Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope... Love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticule, and together, achieving a singular purpose against statistically long odds.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you.

I'm in favour of anything that can get rid of bloody Captchas... They are really really annoying when you've got a visual impairment, almost impossible in fact, and the audio version is even bloody worse!

A number of times I've given up after trying to post something and been caught on one of the damn things.

As Crono pointed out, it's not about preventing spam; it's about showing us ads that force us to say "Yes I will buy this like a good little consumer drone" in order to participate in the conversation. Solve Media actually has an ad for itself at the end of some of the Escapist videos saying that potential customers are more likely to remember brand names when they're forced to repeat them back at the computer. It's the sort of thing I'd expect to see in a dystopian cyberpunk novel or something, and I'm amazed there wasn't some mass exodus of furious users when they first implemented it.

Well, I post alot less these days and I have noticed that this board seems to move much slower than it did a few years ago. Even March Mayhem was cancelled this year, though I don't know the reason for it.

Most of them are also products that I don't know about (maybe because they aren't sold/popular in my country).

However, I always just type some random vague word in (like 'cool'), and they accept that, so I must wonder how effective they are.

My best friend has the same issue, so often he has to ask help from someone who can see to get past them. (or more often just not post)

Once he had to register on some site, and had to wait until I visited him, because he couldn't do it himself.
Then, of course, I almost didn't get past the bloody thing either, because I couldn't figure out it either...

Maybe it's not about effectiveness, it's about your eyes seeing the ad. I refresh until I get a non ad captcha and I wonder if that is actually counting as me seeing all the ads I ignore.

I would like for someone from the Escapist to explain to us why we have to constantly prove we are human.

well, it's not particularly effective advertisement then either, because I'm pretty unlikely to be so impressed by a random brandname that I'll go and google it to find out what it is and then order it overseas...

There is a difference between being dumb and lacking specialised knowledge.
Not everyone plays chess, and not everyone is equally familiar with history, especially considering Internet is global, and different countries tend to consider different parts of history important.
Usually, their own history.

Well, from the Escapists point of view it wouldn't be about the effectiveness of the ad as much as how many views it gets.

Dystopian cyberpunk world?

Shit man, repetition is marketing 101.

Huh, neat little trick. If nothing else, it'll at least start to train people into glorious chess masterminds. Because that's how it works right?

Ok, well it's the only forum I have seen that makes you constantly prove that you are human. Even if what you say is true, that doesn't make it ok.

I mean, isn't it clear that a poster who has been tested hundreds of times isn't a bot?

Oh i agree that users with, say, posts above 100 should be excluded from capchas. im not arguing with you on that.
