Speak for yourself and your nostalgia goggles, but the actors nailed it. Nothing felt mumbled or hollow.
My nostalgia goggles weren't on for the parts of the game I have liked so far, and they're not on for this part I that didn't like.

Like most survival horror games when you pick up an important item?
No. An enemy just spawning in when it wasn't there before? No. Sure, a cutscene might trigger to indicate you have defeat a group of enemies before you're allowed to get a key, pull a lever, or get on an elevator, but in SH2 Remake it's nearly everytime you pick up a key or puzzle item that a random enemy is just suddenly there.

Could have fooled me. So far, i've had zero problems with the actors' performance in this game. I highly doubt i'm gonna have any problems with for the foreseeable future. As far as i'm concerned, they nailed it great. James and Angela in the 🔪 scene.

Most of them are not exactly random. In.
Two of the rooms that involve the big red valve handle, they burst out of rooms that were locked, vefore solving the puzzle or grabbing the item. If Mannequins, you can usually know they're there whenever James automatically draws his weapon. They're just usually enscripted hiding spots.

I was ready to let this game rot in a corner somewhere on the basis of it being a remake by Bloober Team. The fact that I spent 70 bucks on it due to the positive reception's it's gotten shows that I'm very much not blinded by nostalgia. The camera angle and combat are different too, and I'm fine with that as well. I don't even mind James and Angela's voices; James is fine and Angela's actually fits someone who's suffered a lifetime of abuse. It's the voice directing and how the conversation and interaction between the actors flows that doesn't work for me. That's me being blinded by personal preference based on prior movies/games/etc. I'm no more wearing nostalgia goggles for disliking it than you are for liking it.

I don't understand how it doesn't flow for you when it flows perfectly fine for me and most other people. I can just chalk this up to you being so used to the original voice actors. They were given plenty of awkward voice direction. A lot of it not intentional. I get the point, but there's a hard limit for me on that.

Not really.

I wouldn't even say the original voice cast (for James and Angela) was fantastic, there was definite room for improvement. But this is just doing the same exact scene and dialoge in a more monotone, soft spoken way. I don't feel the interaction between James and Angela here, so yeah, I'm going to prefer the goofy charm of the original over this. But I'd much rather they just did something different all together.

There are still ways for me to go ( I'm halfway down with the first dark world section), but they already did. From people's reviews, there's already certain changes that they did with the writing forest. Some sequences events of how they happen. Everyone else is happy enough as is or don't see it as a big negative. You feel however you want to feel, but i'm not gonna go back and forth on this.

I am in the hospital section and it's creepy as fuck. I encountered my first Bubble Head Nurse. Before that encounter, I like how Maria will point out where the monster are coming from, if they getting closer or couldn't spot them yet. Useful in the fog section. In the hospital basement...still useful, but I was able to spot the Mannequins got the drop on all of them.

I like this post.

I couldn't disagree more with a lot of the above. It's a visual treat but that's about it. Much of the important little things and nuances are either gone or misinterpreted for the worse. Most importantly, the tacked on (and simplified) Callisto Protocol esque battle mechanic is an absolute slog to the point it drags the entire game down with it. The original had what was effectively a defense mechanic to protect the player from ambient environmental hazards which served an aesthetic and narrative purpose; the remake goes for game-ified enemy encounters as necessity. These are in no shape or form the same, and it misunderstands what's so compelling about Silent Hill 2. James is a video game character, but he's presented and is engaged with like a person. Remake James plays as a video game character.

It's a very frustrating drawn-out experience. There's nothing 'new' in the game, it is exclusively drawn out enemy encounters and otherworld sequences ripped straight out of Homecoming which were in-turn ripped straight out of the movie. They're horribly paced and entirely straight forward fetch sequences wherein player gets obvious key item for obvious door; there is no longer any player/game friction as the locales are no longer 'real human spaces' but video game stages. Enemy gauntlets run just about wild in the final third of the game. The forced battle arena shower room exemplifies this. Not only that, it's poorly balanced and the enemies play typical "stop hitting me" tactics replete with teleporting attacks and morphing hitboxes of convenience. They behave the same way, every encounter plays out the same way, and the way the game enforces it as a necessity removes all horror and tension. There is no surprise, there is nothing on the line. James will circle strafe game dodge karate-kicking mannequins and knife wielding nurses who simply go "okay, you will give me a turn to attack now, I will teleport through and shank you." At times it's actually glorious in a funny way, which is also sad. I love difficult games, I love being challenged. 2 remake is not either of these things. It is a test in patience out of necessity to provide an expected gaming experience for battle mechanic fixation.

It is fundamentally still stuck where Konami wants the series; it is everything that currently performs well in the upper echelon of the industry. It's a shame too, because the presentation is spot-on for the most part. When you aren't battling forced enemy waves or traversing fun house stages, the game is pretty well excellent and gorgeous to look at. Masahiro Ito's creature designs are fabulous as they've always been and perfectly reflected on screen. If only it wasn't an 8 hour game essentially stretched into a 20 hour slog of mirrored repeat Callisto Protocol-lite enemy encounters, and truly flat character acting and direction out of Maria, a central core aspect of the game's aesthetic and narrative. Angela is alright, and Eddie is very memorably Eddie. Laura is not only Laura but fantastically acted and her chemistry with remake James is very good. James is James until he isn't. Mixed bag of the century.

This re-interpretation, as much as it gets right, Konami unfortunately sat in the background pulling their strings and filing teeth down to the halfway point. I will say, however, it is much better than The Short Message. Travesty of the century. I can live with 2 remake being the former rather than latter. That's it, that's all.

I think that is a major trapping that occurs with all these Remakes coming out. Developers want to try and improve on the existing game, rather than make it 1-for-1, and that leaves people will a lot of mixed feelings.

On one hand i can see people being upset with mechanic changes like in Silent Hill, or Final Fantasy 7, because you are saying you're remaking the game but instead you give people a different experience. It might somewhat be the same as the old experience, but it's not that same and that's really what people want. However changes don't also mean bad either, it's just a matter of how someone personally views it and that is a hard task to put on a development team trying to make a game. We all know and understand that these old games certainly had their bad design elements and their jank, so it makes perfect sense for developers to try and fix those issues. Though in certain cases like with Silent Hill or Resident Evil, these changes dramatically change how the game feels and in that way it stops becoming a direct "remake".

Other times you have games that are extremely faithful. Like the Demon's Souls remake, but even then people complained that they fucked up the art direction of the original game and removed the player's imagination from it. Which I personally think is a ludicrous mindset to have. It would be like saying the zombies in RE2make, don't look like the zombies from the ps1 and therefore are badly designed. The art in Demon's Souls is extrapolated to fill in the gaps that the ps3 could never render, and the art team had to take a fuzzy looking game into something incredibly high detailed and complex.

Either way it showcases that Remaking a game can never be a slamdunk, people will always have complaints about their favorite game being different somehow. In ways that they don't seem to want or even understand improvements or smoothed out rough edges, they just want the same game with warts and all. Though in reality if that's what you want, just play the original games then and ignore the remakes.

Exactly. The why bother trying about it and whining about it and rain on other people's parade half the time? I wasn't referring to you. That question is just certain other reviewers, individuals out there.

Moist Cr1tikal Loves the game though he feels the combat get repetitive in the second half. Sterling likes certain aspects, but
she found the mannequins too annoying and predictable. I find them fun though.

When it comes to remakes, i'm rarely ever going to complain so long a remake is good and done with high effort. And like you mentioned before. Most people's don't have these old consoles at all. Or anymore, so they have to go the next best thing. Most people aren't going to go back and try to find a PS2 or xbox to play Silent Hill 2 or 3. Assuming they could find either copies at a cheap price. It's funny people complain about certain remakes, but nobody cried about the Ninja Warriors Remake in 2019. That was a game stuck on the SNES. The only complaint people had with that game was removing the scoring system. Me included. Otherwise it is superior to the original. Despite that the original remake on SNES (the original game is an arcade game with very simple combat.

Whoever wrote that article has right to their opinions, but I feel like they're hating on way too much, or just looking for stuff to complain about. I'll give them some point about the late game combat. But they're crying like it's the worst thing ever or has a worst problem than Homecoming or Casitol Protocol (Sterling's words).
