The sequal would actually make more sense than the first one. Think about it. What's it going to be about?

Sean Bean. Looking for his wife and daughter. In a cursed town.

That sounds like Silent Hill to me. I hated the first one, but the sequal might actually be awesome.

While the first one wasn't a particularly good Silent Hill movie, I do think it was a pretty good horror movie (actually, comparing it to other horror movies, it was more than just pretty good) - while admitting this may get me spat on; I've been hoping they'd go for a sequel.
I felt the same way, but it was more because that movie left me unsatisfied in a "I want moar" kind of way. Odd.

No matter what you say, no matter what anyone says, Silent Hill is THE best Movie adaption of a game out there. FACT!

Now, while that sobering thought settles into our brains, I actually quite liked SH on its own grounds, and as a horror film found it vastly superior to most horror films of the past few years...[eyes "Nightmare on Elm Street" suspiciously]...

I actually quite liked the first movie. I liked the fact that it wasn't just Silent Hill: The Movie but that it took familiar places, plotploints, characters, etc. but did slightly different things with them. I particularly liked how they handled the school portion of the movie as it was fresh but still contained a lot of winks to fans of the games. I also quite liked the ending as it had a somewhat Silent Hill-esque twist to it.

I do agree that Pyramid Head was a bit overused. I wouldn't have minded seeing him appear once or twice but I do feel his connection is basically with James. As such, he should have been used more as a background character or something that appears extremely frightening but ultimately has no interest in the protagonists at all.

Overall, the part I didn't particularly enjoy was the horror movie requisite bloodbath in the church. Resorting to that sort of silliness was a bit of a slap in the face to not only the relatively gore free games but also the feeling the movie itself had built up to that point.

I quite liked the first film and it's still a half-decent film if you *forget* how the town works (i.e. utilises your inner feelings/fears/emotions against you) - the only issue that I had with it was that it was too long and dragged on for a bit.

Hmm... yeah, now that you've mentioned that they really could make this film very much like the second game with a few minor alterations.

For all the whining from fans of the games, and gamers in general, I liked the Silent Hill film. It was a more competent movie than anything Uwe Boll or Andrzej Bartkowiak [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrzej_Bartkowiak] can make when it comes to video game-based films.

Well considering only gamers know anything about Silent Hill, yeah, you have to make a movie for the gamers, fucking dumb ass hollywood, also I watched the first movie, couple things they fucked up on, Harry Mason wasn't in it, it failed right there, also as nice as it was to see Pyramid Head they should have kept him out till the second movie, he's like the big star of the show, so what are they gonna do in the second one to make the girls scream, probably nothing, and I swear they better put fucking James god damn Sunderland in the second movie!!
Of all the things to complain about.... So you're saying they should just take the original stories and make them movies? That sounds really dumb to me, since why would I want to go watch something when I can actually play it. And I pray that they won't have James in the movie sequel, just make it something original.

As some others have pointed out, Silent Hill -movie wasn't that bad. Doesn't hold a candle to the original games, but for a videogame movie it was much better than I would have ever dared to hope for. I personally forgave the movie a lot of negatives because they used costumes for the monsters instead of some cheap and unappealing CG, which was really refreshing. It really made them look believable, but the movie could have used some darkness to make them actually scary.

I don't get what made the first movie "unaccessible" to movie goers, though. Would someone explain this?

I did like the games better, but the movie wasn't that bad. i made the mistake of trying to apply game logic to the movie, even though the movie wasn't really supposed to be the same as the games at all. Other than that, I had no problem with the movie, except the ending, which hopefully the sequel will explain.

Not really. The movie took great liberties with the mythos, to the point that it's in a world of its own. And some of their reasons for change are incredibly shitty, like their reasoning for why Harry Mason was replace by a woman who was never mentioned in the game.

Plus, in the making-of they don't acknowledge the monster designs come from the games, they speak as though they created the designs by themselves.
Personally, I can't believe there are still people bitching about Harry going super mom for this film. Good god, could you imagine watching an exact copy of Silent Hill 1's story from start to finish but on film? It would be fucking boring. I already know the story, there would be no twists, no surprises, no point.

Granted, a movie that has nothing to do with the game that it's based on (Alone in the Dark) is also pointless as well. I want to see stuff from the game put into the movie. That's why I came to see the movie. That's what this film did. It had balance, something new for Silent Hill fans while still giving us that overall feeling that we love from the games.

Now, for Silent Hill 2, the best way to ensure this sequel to work is for it to go the way of Silent Hill 2 and make it have absolutely nothing to do with the first film. The crazy cult was decimated in the first film, so we don't need to see them again. Alessa has been "satisfied" so there's no reason to see her again. Hell, if they wanted, they could put Sean Bean as the main character looking for Rose from the first film. That'd be a throw back the games while still continuing this fresh, new story.

The first movie entertained me... and in the end isn't that what a movie is supposed to do? But even though I never really got into the whole Silent Hill thing, even I knew there was something not accurate about it. Which speaks leagues for the writers and their intentions... or it's my natural cynicism regarding Hollywood in general with a touch of paranoia.

Still, I don't think it warranted a sequel.
... it left it open regarding the husband and whatnot.

On the bright side, at least it's not Uwe Boll.
At least not yet.
But... if they're going to do Silent Hill 2, then the least they can do is have everyone involved with the film actually play the damn game.

Well obviously I'm just one of the freaks who loves the silent hill games (especially the first 2) and enjoyed the film - shock horror! I think I just tore a hole in fabric of reality.

My only real problem with it was having pyramid head in it. He was done well but he's far more specific to silent hill 2 than some people seem to realise. Hopefully this new film will be even better than the original. Wonder if they will continue with the same characters or if it will be a different story?

I didn't hate it, I just thought it was a very sub-par movie. And I didn't watch it as a Silent Hill fan. As a matter of fact, I only played through the Silent Hill games after I watched the movie. So I watched the movie as a horror movie, not a game adaptation. And I thought it was mediocre. It fell into the same Hollywood trap that equates horror with extreme gore. For some people that could be scary, I guess for me it just feels cheap.

The problem I have with things like this is that there is no real reason to change the material to appeal to a wider audience. The mythology of Silent Hill as it was in the games would work just as well within the movies as what they did. The changes seemed largely designed around not wanting the movie to push the envelope too far, or risk offending anyone. For example a lot of the satanic stuff was cut out of the movie, and I'd gather that was done both to be politically correct and avoid making anyone too uncomfortable, which is ironic with a horror movie.

I can understand needing to adapt things like comics or video games a bit to work on the big screen, however I become critical when the changes involve things that really didn't need to be changed for the sake of making them workable.

That said, it will be interesting to see what happens with a sequel.

Though honestly, I think they do need a better script writer. One of the most "WTF" moments of the entire movie was when you had a certain female cop bluffing some of the bad guys/cultists with an empty gun, and then getting murdered when she tells them the gun is empty (and everything was fine right before that).... really that entire scene made me go "say wha...".
