I loved the film! It's one of my favourites... Sure it's nowhere near as good as the games, but I still liked it.

I shall look forward to the sequel :)

Two tips for ya:

1. DROP THE ORIGINAL STORYLINE. Do what the games did and go for the SH2 non-cult-related story.

2. Drop the plot-development moments that are dragged out and uninteresting (ie. The parts with the father looking around the "normal" town in the first movie).

The first movie wasn't bad, for a horror movie. But, it wasn't really a great Silent Hill movie, for several reasons:
-too short; Silent Hill games have slow pacing, which intensifies the atmosphere. Obviously this can't be done in a movie, as most moviegoers are idiots who fall asleep when something lasts longer than 2 hours and doesn't contain a huge explosion every ten seconds
-Very simple story; in lieu of the usual mix of betrayal and guilt (Alessa's mother being responsible for her suffering), you had an insane cult that wanted to keep the town pure. Not bad by itself, but it is lacking compared to the deeper story of the games
-Some of the monsters; why were the acid spitting Lying Figures in it? But some of the others were pretty good (burned children, nurses), so I think we can call this one even
-Pyramid Head; why was he int the movie? Fanservice, that's why.

I mean I wouldn't mind another Silent Hill movie, as there really is a lack of good horror movies, but I'm also a Silent Hill fan. Yes, I'd love to see a Silent Hill 2 (the game) adaptation, but it would only appeal to the people who have played and understood the game. A continuation from the first movie makes sense to a degree, but what could the adversary possibly be? Allessa's vengence is complete, the cult is obliterated, and the town should be a bit more monster free now. Still, I'll keep my eye on it...

No matter what you say, no matter what anyone says, Silent Hill is THE best Movie adaption of a game out there. FACT!

Now, while that sobering thought settles into our brains, I actually quite liked SH on its own grounds, and as a horror film found it vastly superior to most horror films of the past few years...[eyes "Nightmare on Elm Street" suspiciously]...
Correct, it IS the best movie adaptation, but that's really not saying anything.

I didn't like the first film. I don't care how it was on its own grounds, when it's based of a game that's MOST FAMOUS for slow, can't-see-in-the-dark horror, then that's what I judge the film by. The movie, by those simple standards, was too over-the-top and flashy (Game: Pyramid Head smashes someone's head over a TV about twenty seconds before we get there, and menaces the player from behind an impassable gate. Movie: Pyramid Head rips the skin off a random woman and flings her at the fleeing crowd.).

On the bright side, at least it's not Uwe Boll.
At least not yet.
But... if they're going to do Silent Hill 2, then the least they can do is have everyone involved with the film actually play the damn game.
Movie adaptaions are always set up in an alternate universe.
Its easier for Hollywood to make movies this way.
They'll never stay true to the game.

That's a bad thing. I won't even have the enjoyment of being to laugh at how tragically campy it is. EDIT: actually, when I think about it, the acting in the first film was quite campy.

Personally, as a pretty big fan of the first 3 games, I found the film quite cringeworthy. But I wouldn't go as far as sending hate mail. These days it kinda feels like ruining videogame franchises is what Hollywood was built for.

Yeah, but they need to keep enough of the general atmosphere to stay consistant. And they need to realize that the monsters were psychological reflections of the protagonist's questionable sanity.

The First one was no where near as bad as people say. I think silent hill is a very cinematic/in depth game and would be right at home on the big screen, providing its done right. I think a Silent Hill 2 could redeem the franchise's venture into non interactive media. Also any one who thinks a film is rubbish before they even watch it (or before its even been filmed) are just prejudice (for lack of a better word).

But even if you still think it will be crap, theres one simple resolve. DONT WATCH IT! no one is forcing you to, dont waste your money if you think you wont like it.

They don't have to target towards gamers, just stick to the game and the film will be awesome for both gamers and non gamers! whats the point in trying to change it?
I spose the gamers are hard to please though, especially with silent hill, as it works best as the way it is, an interactive medium. i understand that they don't want to JUST target towards gamers but if they keep it like the game, us gamers should like it anyway.

I wish they would make'em like that.
But we have to settle with the crap they give us.

Iron Man 2 looks promising...

I loved and hated the movie. I loved the first half, but hated the second. The first half was proper psychological horror, at least compared to the second half. That's when it turned to the big showdown with nothing but unnecessary gore. And as someone who hates gore, it didn't amuse me.

Never mind, "Kinda", I liked the first one. It's the gold standard by which movie adaptations should follow, faithful to the original, while having its own approach, to complement the different medium. Whenever people say that video game movies are always bad, I point to Silent Hill in response. They probably won't directly port the game to the movie, which will irritate some fans, but who cares? The video game series itself has done far worse harm to itself then the movie could ever have. There's no one who deserves a video game movie more then the guy who made Silent Hill. Looking forward to it.

You get +1 Internet for this statement.

Silent Hill is easily among my Horror Movies Top 5 and can stand up on its own regardless of it being the best damn game-to-movie conversion EVER.

I'd begun to fear the sequel wouldn't be made after all, but it seems all is well. Looking forward to it. (And boy, did I need good news like this after just coming home from the cinema and the utter disappointment that is Iron Man 2.)

Okay, so, what I get from this is that the gamers don't want a sequel, and the hollywood does. Hollywood knows gamers don't want it, so what does that mean? Either Hollywood will bend over backwards to please gamers and the general audience at large, or Hollywood will snub gamers and gaming elements to make a generic horror movie for the general public, vilifying all of gamers fears (ironic, that).

I'll watch it. I reserve judgment until then.

Well considering only gamers know anything about Silent Hill, yeah, you have to make a movie for the gamers, fucking dumb ass hollywood, also I watched the first movie, couple things they fucked up on, Harry Mason wasn't in it, it failed right there, also as nice as it was to see Pyramid Head they should have kept him out till the second movie, he's like the big star of the show, so what are they gonna do in the second one to make the girls scream, probably nothing, and I swear they better put fucking James god damn Sunderland in the second movie!!
If you're any sort of fan of the Silent Hill series, then you know that continuity doesn't actually matter.

If you paid any attention to the movie beyond your desire for fan wank, you'd realize that it was -extremely- faithful to the TONE of the movie. It had the right shots (Rose's first walk through the alleys was down to the camera angles out of silent hill), the right concept of a world created by the psyche of an individual, and that constant creepy undertone of 'what the' that pervades the series.

If they just retold the videogame's story, it'd been a steaming pile of wtf; Silent Hill's story makes for a fine video game, but it's too disjointed, too many elements that don't really make sense.

It wouldn't have been a good idea to retell the first story either, because there'd be no surprises. Instead, it took the basic concept 'Alessa is in a hellish world created by some other power, and the protagonist's daughter is in this world, and the protagonist must find her' and changed the 'why' part of the equation. By making Dahlia into a sympathetic woman rather than the villain, they changed the tone of the movie; it became about motherhood, and as such, you couldn't have a male Harry Mason serve in the role of the wandering seeking parent.

Also, by having a different protagonist, that is a clue-hammer to the face of the videogame fan-dumb that it's a different story, so don't be surprised if things are completely not the same.

I guess I'm the only one who liked the film. The only problem with it was the ending, which was such a fucking cock-tease. I enjoyed the rest though, and I really liked the CGI.

Having said that, I've never really played the games.

Forget eyeing suspiciously, I'm flat out pointing at it.

And hey, Hitman wasn't bad.
