I won't play any game that's disc and instruction booklet smell funny.
I like my game smell the way it is.
I love the new game smell![footnote]almost as good as the scent of collectable ice hockey cards[/footnote] They should have that on Steam-bought games as well.

OT: I don't play Dragon Age: Origins that often because I need to make so tough decisions in it, like selecting characters for party. Contemplating on that screen takes ages for me sometimes.

I don't play Civilization V that often because I know it'll keep my in its grip for so many hours at a time.

RDR because they made a zombie DLC, I dispise anything that tosses away its main premise for zombies.
Completely off topic, but...I love your avatar.

On topic: I refuse to play StarCraft because my exhusband is obsessed with it. Weird reason, I know, but what's even weirder is I'm an avid WoW player, I played the WarCrafts to death before WoW came out, and I'm murderous over Diablo 3 finally coming out, maybe. Hopefully.

I think it's silly when people refuse to play a game because they can't choose the gender of the main character. Personally, being a girl, I usually choose a female character if I'm given the option (with the sole exception of Morrowind, where I played a Kalam Mekhar clone as my head was swimming with Malazan awesomeness at the time). But I'm not going to avoid a game if it happens that I can only play a male character. If I did, I'd miss out on wonderful titles like Planescape: Torment and The Witcher (and Alpha Protocol, for that matter, which I quite enjoyed in spite of its issues). Yet I know people who have refused to play PS:T because they couldn't play a female Nameless One, TW because they couldn't play Geraltine, etc. I don't think it makes sense. It's about as daft to me as refusing to read a book because of the gender of the main character.

In terms of my own silly reasons for not playing games... I dunno - I tend not to go for anything outside of the RPG or strategy genres. But that's because I have limited gaming time and I only want to play games I know I'll like. (I'd only buy an average of, say, four games a year - not including gifts for friends.) I've even avoided buying games I'm fairly sure I'd like because I don't have time for them and I have no willpower (e.g. I still haven't played Oblivion because of how long it is - and I know I wouldn't be able to stop playing until I finished the main story). But I don't think that's super-silly, just a question of knowing myself.

Worst I've heard? 'the achievements are too hard!' or 'I can't 100% it!'

I may be a little obsessive about cheivo's, but basing what games you play or don't on them is a little insane.

Personally, any time a games marketing focuses on gore and/or sex to the exclusion of all else.

Tell me its 'like Baldurs gate, in 3D'? you got me interested!

Tell me its 'like Baldurs gate, with sex and blood', I feel insulted, like you beleive I'll only buy the game if your throwing blood at my face and waving tits at me.

So, despite the good reviews and my love of RPG's, still leary about dragon age.

Well I almost never refuse to play a game for stupid reasons.. except the popularity one, that gets me sometimes. but hey, I own reach so I cant be that bad yet.

But man, Ive brought and Played a game for a really STUPID reason. Yeah? wanna hear it? Dirge of Cerberus. Oh yeah, that's right. That faggy Vincent valentine game on the ps2.

Why? Because I'm a fanboy. Aaaaaaand the combat wasnt actually that bad really, fun even in a repetitive rpg kinda way. But the cutscenes made my eyes bleed and the level design was abominable and labyrinthine, just like the story. All to sate my inner squealing fanboy. Thats a stupid reason to play a game.

Word up about dragon age windy, its not so much GORE but there's some real emphasis on blood everywhere. Like diablo 2 lowest level of dungeon all over the walls kind of blood focus. and then there's this underlying feeling of unwholesomeness crawling around under the lord of the ring/dnd thematic fun. Like 70% of the time your led to believe that its just another joyful romp into the world of sword slinging and quest doing and provided you make your saving throws everything's gonna be OK. But then there's this dark disturbing 30% that occasionally pops up and reminds you that this is serious business. That everything is not necessarily ok, the baby eating horrors ARE on the quaint little towns doorstep and there's NOTHING you can do to save them! YOU FAILURE OF A MAN! WHY DID YOU LET THEM DIE!? like a drug trip that keeps going bad and then switching right back to happy times like nothing ever happened. Also the sex is totally optional and easily missed.

I don't want to play Starcraft 2 1v1 because I'm afraid I'll lose. Going on long winning streaks gets me thinking too much, and the pressure gets to me.

I sometimes don't play games because 'everyone else loves it' like the ff series lol. But wait, i have worse, a friend of mine refuses to play my fps games because she 'doesn't where the guns spawn' in verses. Still worse, she won't even play co-op cuz she 'doesn't know what the guns are or what they do' lol

Same friend insists i play mortal combat with her when i have no idea how to play any of them. Insisting so much becuause My mortal combat style games have too many combo's (virtua fighter 5) or 'the characters were WAY faster in the 2nd game, they are super slow and sluggish here' (soul calibur 4).

On the topic of bad graphics as a reason, she refused to watch my friend play Manhunt for ps2, or listen to him explain the story and game play, because 'the graphics are horrible, it looks like lego-block pple' lol

Depending on your views on emulation, this may sound either silly or perfectly valid.

A common reason for not playing a game I give is that my emulator for whatever platform the game is on can't run it yet (or in some cases, doesn't yet have a working emulator (Xbox family, I'm looking at you)).

I didn't finish Twilight Princess because Link's relationship with Midna screamed "horrifying implications".

And I don't play Starcraft because it ignores tactics in favor of unit spamming.

Does anyone have this 'sequel conundrum' as I'm calling it?
Not to that degree. I could play MM without playing OoT first (assuming I ever wanted to touch MM again, which I don't). And I can just pop in any Mega Man game and have a go. It's only when the stories are very tightly connected that I feel the need to start at the first game. Take Golden Sun for example, I wanted to replay that so I had to start with the first one. You can't just start on The Lost Age because that actually is half-way through the story.

PhunkyPhazon said:
And what other dumb reasons do you have or have heard for not wanting to play a game?
Have heard: graphics aren't good enough or the game is "kiddy", especially when it's not (I heard someone call the Jak and Daxter series kiddy yesterday on some other forum, it took a lot to not flame the hell out of him for that extra-strength stupidity). And for stuff like Mario, there is a difference between "Fun for the whole family" and "kiddy." Mario is the former, not the latter.

Oh and the "I won't play mainstream games" shit too. Yay. We have this silly "indie only" crap for music, and now we get it for games too. Joy. I'm all for some indie games if they are good (example, Limbo is good, "Your 360 controller is now a vibrating sex aid" is horrid), but sometime the games made at high profile studios sell piles and piles of copies because they're really really good. When people say crap like they won't try Red Dead Redemption because "It's mainstream crap only played by frat boys" I want to start injuring people.

Dumb reasons I won't play a game? The only thing I can think of that might count is that I'll never be buying any games from Good Old Games because I didn't appreciate their little publicity stunt where they claimed the service was going offline because they couldn't keep it running anymore.

Neither, I'd say you need to stop stealing and actually buy your games and then you wouldn't have to worry about that problem.

It was on a PC. Or a 360.

Thats honestly the reason I havent played TF2 or Portal yet. No, i'm not joking and yes, i'm being absolutely serious.

Mainly I havent because i dont like Microsoft as a gaming console. I believe they should only work in PCs. No, dont ask me why I think that or how i came to that conclusion, it doesnt make sense to me either. Plus I have an absolute hatred of Halo and anyhting that associates itself with it (my friends and I blew up a 360 with recon armour profile when the friend who owned it wanted to get a PS3, and we torched the swag stuff with it. One of those halo 3 collectible things), so you... theres that.

... I can feel your hate Microsoft fan boys. It feeds me. XD joking

World of Warcraft; I'm terrified I'll like it, get addicted to it, and have my life eaten away.
Haha! This is pretty much my reason for neglecting it too. A friend bought me the main game and the first extension and I refused to play because I knew I would lose my life to it. I played enough at her house to realise this would happen so I had to use the excuse that as a student - it wouldn't be feasible for me to start.

Now I have a full time job. Full time partner and full time kid. I'd end up like the fat blonde woman from the Guild if I played now. I feel like an addict who has been weened off a drug. I still want to play it sometimes, especially when I see trailers or threads.

Because a storyline aint spectacular enough, save the world and all that clichéd crap.

What's with people and the need to be a "somebody" in their games?

Pretty much this reason, which seems to be parroted on this site a lot in different forms, either as an accusation or a justification.

I used to avoid Valve and Valve-related things like the plague because of the fanbase, though I'm starting to get away from that.
