You know what... call me an patsy but that's all I really wanted. There's only so much that could be done with mods with Oblivion. I'm just after more of what Oblivion was, but prettier.
Pretty much this.

Also, I'm not an ungrateful whiner that demands more than current technology and consoles can produce. The game is huge... they can't have everything perfect... yet. I'll still have loads of fun with it because I'm old school, and that's how we roll. We can actually sit back and still be awed by today's tech and not whine when it doesn't improve DRAMATICALLY in a few scant years, because to us old timers, it always has, and at a truly staggering speed. Shit, I played arcade games with two colors as a kid. This shit is straight out of fucking Star Trek to me.

Besides, it looks wayyyyy better than Oblivion, and that's pretty much all I wanted. A prettier Oblivion. Could it be better? Sure, but I savor each tech morsel as it comes out without spitting it out and demanding better like a spoiled kid at dinner, and the gameplay is really what I'm after anyway. The meat on the bone if you will. And I don't really care about what I consider the grizzle. To me, sure, grizzle is tasty, but not everyone's down with it. I'm not fussed like some folks.

(This is to no one in particular, not even OP, so relax. /rant)

So physics are still shitty?

Are the guards the same as in Oblivion? If not, I would call that a plus.

Could've been a lot better, that's all I'm trying to say in this thread :)
And most would say it's the consoles' fault. (See my previous post) :/

Also, I've yet to see physics anywhere that weren't a little floaty. I'll withhold comments on animation, seeing as how they're supposed to be better... and I'm ok with the conversation system. It could be better, yes, but I fail to see how... it could switch to more cinematic camera like Mass Effect, but so many people qq about "being forced into third person", I doubt it'd fly. /:|

There is something I wonder about. Can we please start an Elder Scrolls game without being arrested?! It gets tiresome to start the game there every time whenever I'm playing any Elder Scrolls game (other than Daggerfall, which is just buggy.).
No. Just no. :p Starting off imprisoned is tradition... still, mods will come around sooner or later, I'm sure.

I no longer expect much from Bethesda. I just really wanted Skyrim to be an updated Oblivion set in a different area. I think it may be that. I've sunk hours into Oblivion and it wasn't even that great. I'll get my money's worth from this game.

Fine by me, dude. I'm not trying to troll, but whatever. The stuff I brought up isn't even that horrible, it's just an observation I made.

Be a good sport though and actually do as you said and come back to this thread to confirm what I said was true, once you've played it.

All they did was add some more stuff to what they sometimes do. Sometimes an enemy will challenge you by bashing his shield with his sword or something. That was pretty cool. Just don't expect more changed than that.

I mean hell, you could even tell from the gameplay vids that the animations were the same.

Any game with Euphoria implemented in it.

True, but how else do you explain the protagonist starting with zero worldly possessions and having to collect new stuff? It's always going to be some variation of coma, lockup, left for dead, etc. to start these kinds of games because it just doesn't make sense if some person living a normal life arbitrarily starts one of these epic quests.

Looks like someone was a bit too hyped up. If you think that Skyrim is just Oblivion HD then it doesn't sound like you've played it a whole lot; I haven't seen a feature list yet but I know there's a whole lot of improvements over Oblivion.

From what i have seen in reviews and such this should not be the case. Would be weird that those reviews just skip over something like you describe as is should be super obvious.
It doesn't seem weird at all once you see the raging conflict of interest that exists with having PR firms conducting the reviews.

...

What the OP said is exactly what I expected from this game. People complained about zooming in on NPC's lifeless faces for conversations, so they simply removed that. No one ever said that they were improving the physics or motion capture. All anyone talked about was the scaling system, skill system, and OMGDRAGONS!!! Considering how underwhelmed I was by Oblivion, I never even bothered to get psyched for this game. Im saving all my anticipation up for TOR, which btw, I just got into the weekend beta for!

I hope all the people who have been calling this GOTY before playing it learn something.

You should probably have waited till Friday to make this thread. People would be able to discuss it with you then.

I've seen some side-by-side comparisons of horse riding, walking and sneaking and Skyrim's look far better. Also think I noticed a slight variation in the walk animation when the character came across an incline or steps in an older video... overall, everything looks better than Oblivion. That's a good start, no? >.>

And Euphoria... I know it was in GTA4 (and maybe Force Unleashed?), and it was fairly awesome. There was certainly more weight to things, but that didn't stop floating altogether... to me, anyway.

That being said, I'd love to see that engine in more games...

Uhhh... from the netherlands and playing the game early legally? I seriously doubt that. I have a feeling this is just an attempt to bash skyrim without actually playing it.
I didn't see if someone already replied to this with the following text, so here it is.

Dutch people could buy the game from tuesday. I got my PC version then. The console versions are playable without hassle, but for PC you need steam and steam makes you wait till 11-11-11.........wish I had my own PS3 and TV :p

Played it yesterday for a few hours since a buddy of mine got it (legally) early on PS3.
Yes, it looks nice, but why does everything else feel the same? The same weightless physics, the same horrible character animations, the same awkward standstill conversations, the same absolutely idiotic AI...

Now, I had some fun with Oblivion, it's a good game, especially for its time, but why is the ONLY damn thing they've improved over the years the graphics? They've had so much time, yet most of the stuff we get is directly ported over from Oblivion. Worst was when two characters were standing in front of each other, completely motionless (save for their faces), shouting at the top of their lungs something like 'OH MY GOD A DRAGON WTF WTF WTF'. I mean, shit. Another thing was when a character runs for his life (again, with the exact same character animations of people running in Oblivion), then when he's reached his waypoint he turns around to meet you super damn slowly like everything is alright.

It's like they took all the (valid) criticism they got with Oblivion (a good game, but by far not perfect) and just decided to disregard EVERYTHING.

Oh well, it'll still be a nice walk-in-the-mountains simulator.
Does the combat system feel different at all? Or is every battle won using the exact same strategies like in Oblivion?

You can now bash things with your shield, that does kind of open foes up to attack. That's different. The casting is different of course since you can use both hands, but for the rest it's the same. I don't mind, though, the combat worked alright for me in Oblivion.

EDIT: oh yeah, there's finishing moves. They ported the same slowdown sound from Fallout 3 when that happens.

So is you mom but we still play with her :p

Why doesn't a big game have the same polish as a small one? Well if you can do some basic math the answer isn't that far away.
Yes we would like all games to be polished to a mirror shine in every aspect, but the logistics of that for this sort of game are practically impossible.
Even if you somehow get financed for the minimum of 20-30 years to put all the content together the game would haveto be rewritten on new tech and engines nonstop, so who knows what a pile of snowballing shit you would end up with.

And then at the end you get outsold by Madden 729 ... fuck that

That's a shame, at least the casting sounds fun. I'll likely build a traditional wizard for my first playthrough then. Thanks for the reply.

But still, I have the notion the OP is dutch judging by his username.

Yes, I'm psyched for skyrim, but I am also reserved since I know who develops it.
