This is one of my biggest criticisms of oblivion. The amount of required patching, both official and fan made is borderline ridiculous. Day one patches for a brand new game is not something that should be expected or required

If this leads to idiotic fanboys coming in here to rage and not even finish reading the post, that's their problem, not mine.
It is... I've seen you whine once or twice on almost every page about people not reading. :p

Really, everyone knew Skyrim was being developed for consoles, so it being technologically outdated is hardly news.

You say you like it, and that's good, really. :D But you only pointed out and extrapolated on its flaws, which could easily paint this as a run-of-the-mill hate thread... that was the vibe I got when I read it the first time, I'll admit.

Oh, and your ending line:

Doesn't really strike me as praise, so much as a sarcasm-fueled final stab. :/

Might be worth your time to edit in a sentence or two (more would be better, of course) of actual praise into that post, otherwise you'll still be getting a steady stream of ragers... just sayin'. :<

Oh well that's not good to hear. Hopefully the day one patch will fix the worst of it. The rest can be modded out.

Eh, you're probably right about all of this. Oh well, at least the thread got really long and led to some discussion, what better purpose for a thread eh? :)

Just to get this out of the way (not aimed at you): I really am not trolling. I didn't even give this thread an offensive name to get a rise out of people or get a lot of replies, but it sure as shit did work.

I know it's wrong, but... I'm awfully proud of my first reply. :p

Anyhoo, this whole thread actually kept me entertained since it went up, which has made this last couple of days of waiting to play pass by that much quicker, so... thanks. >^w^< (Khajiit ftw... meow)

To be fair, with such a huge open world, there are going to be countless issues. Even if they spent years play testing I doubt they'd find them all.
Frankly I'm glad that they didn't just sit on their hands once the code had been dispatched for shipping, and continued to work on sorting out those bugs.

I'm still massively excited. Oblivion was what got me into western RPG's, before that it was all sport sims and shooters. If Skyrim is nothing more than a massive Oblivion expansion I still can't wait.

Thats a little disheartening to hear, although not entirely unexpected.
Although i'll have to decide for myself once i get it and hopefully the PC modders can fix anything i dont like.
But literally every pre-release review, preview, image and footage from the game disagrees with what this guy is saying, none of it tainted with "look how awesome we are" bias from the company and all of it filled with "this is awesome, buy it when it comes out" bias from the reviewers and critics who got to preview it. All of them got this impression from 360 versions, so unless the 360 got lots of good stuff while the PC and PS3, arguably the more powerful platforms got LESS (unlikely) then this is probably a load of bunk. Either that or he's hardly played the game.

What'll it be, believe this one guy or keep your chin up and see what it's like when it's actually, y'know, released?
My copy got sihpped yesterday, so hopefully i should have it tomorrow meaning i can see for myself :)
I havent actually watched any of the press release stuff, apart from seeing a few screen shots the game will be completely fresh for me.

The thing is, most of the stuff that guy said, was just as bad in fallout as it was oblivion, so it wouldnt surprise me if they hadnt fixed it for skyrim. Either way im still going to enjoy the game.

Yes, they did change 'things'. But not what I mentioned.

Also I didn't even go into the voice acting (which is fine in Skyrim btw), what are you even talking about?
Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't think I would need to remind you of your own post. Allow me to then:

Yes, it looks nice, but why does everything else feel the same?
Now, I had some fun with Oblivion, it's a good game, especially for its time, but why is the ONLY damn thing they've improved over the years the graphics?
You spoke dogmatically. You made blanket statements that said nothing was improved but the graphics. Instead, you should have just complained about what you didn't like, because there are MANY improvements to the game, probably ones you didn't notice (and shouldn't be expect to as things are less visible when they work right).

How about dual wielding? Combination spells? Finishing move animations? Ability perks? New spells like clairvoyance so you never get lost? Do these count as "nothing"?

If you want to complain about specific things, be my guest. Strike that, I ENCOURAGE you to do that. Don't make blanket statements though, they'll almost always be wrong.

See how I said "almost" right there?

Whats that, the games appear to have a similar engine? The same proprietary engine they used for a majority of there games? Someone sound the alarm, they didn't create a new engine for the game!

Actually the things you address are mostly the issues that aren't going to change, like physics, because altering them is very time intensive and beyond the scope of the project, or things that the industry as a whole is not developing properly, like AI. We shall see what the fan reaction is in a few days.

Just because something is outdated doesn't mean it's bad. Books are outdated, and they're awesome. Old video games are outdated, and people still use emulators to play them. The written language is outdated, we've been using it for fuck knows how many millenia and, well, look up.

This is... painfully true. I apologize.

I must say though that by 'feel the same', 'feel' is the key word there. Of course there's new features, the but feel of the game is the same, and in my opinion that is what they should have improved, dual wielding fireballs or not. But yeah I could've made that a lot clearer.

Don't kid yourself, it was never a good walk-in-the-mountains simulator. Real mountains aren't that sheer and unclimbable.

Does it feel as good to play as Fallout 3 (with it's fuck-all stupid writing) or New Vegas (with the handstanding scorpions)? If it does, I'm sooo fucking excited for it. If it does not, it might still be as good as Oblivion. Which means I still know I'll enjoy it thoroughly. This isn't Planescape:Torment we're talkign about here. It's a game about killing dragons and mammoths.

Yep. I'll be disappointed for years.

"Man this sucks, I barely have gotten 800 hours into this game..."

Sex is a little older than books and I'm sure it is no worse for it ;).

Played it yesterday for a few hours since a buddy of mine got it (legally) early on PS3.
Yes, it looks nice, but why does everything else feel the same? The same weightless physics, the same horrible character animations (not yourself, 3rd person looks fine, it's the NPCs that are still shit), the same awkward standstill conversations (though now not as zoomed in, and sometimes they even move their hands), the same absolutely idiotic AI...

Now, I had some fun with Oblivion, it's a good game, especially for its time, but why is the ONLY damn thing they've improved over the years the graphics? They've had so much time, yet most of the stuff we get is directly ported over from Oblivion. Worst was when two characters were standing in front of each other, completely motionless (save for their faces), shouting at the top of their lungs something like 'OH MY GOD A DRAGON WTF WTF WTF'. I mean, shit. Another thing was when a character runs for his life (again, with the exact same character animations of people running in Oblivion), then when he's reached his waypoint he turns around to meet you super damn slowly like everything is alright.

It's like they took all the (valid) criticism they got with Oblivion (a good game, but by far not perfect) and just decided to disregard EVERYTHING.

Oh well, it'll still be a nice walk-in-the-mountains simulator.

EDIT: before I get even more fire. It's not that I don't enjoy this game. I love walking in the mountains. It's just that it could've been better and they could've done something with the critique they got last time.

EDIT #2: Naturally, everyone assumes I am 'trolling'. Problem is, I really have played the game. How? It was released here yesterday. http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=skyrim+netherlands&meta=

I agree with you on everything.

I will still enjoy this game immensely though. And even more after, just because I know that eventually everything can be modded out... Well not on PS3 and Xbox. But well it's a personal choice after all.

Good to hear, I like it that way. I'll feel right at home. In fact, I imagine the characters behave more like fallout 3. Sounds good, since I'm not one for change.

I find this amusing. Every video and screenshot of Skyrim has given me the same impression, that while the armor/weapon/race choices and graphics may have been updated, there's still no emotion put into the game, and that it would be to mountains and dragons what Fallout 3 was to pits of irradiated water and Deathclaws. I still fail to see where all the hype come from, and I cannot wait to relish in some delicious schadenfreude when I start hearing people be disappointed. Or, even better, the bug reports.

Um.. Lets just throw out a few new improvements
-New menu system which uses the actual world as a map and other cool little tid bits
-You only cant move during your response period, you can move freely during the talking phase
- A whole set of custom finishers and animations for fighting specific enemies
-Duel Wielding of just about anything, including spells for combos
-Sprint (In just about every game these days)
-Neutral wandering Ai's like giants
-Dragons, who provide a drastic amount of dynamic AI, including pack mentality and random hostility

Yes, I'm sure there's still a bit of stiffness in the casual AI, but Bethesda put so much into the game that I can overlook a boring village or two.
