Skyrim Beaten In Just Over Two Hours

I dont really care how long hes been playing it if you can finish it in 2 hours then geez... I couldnt beleive it when I finished FA3. Im not sure how long it took but it was a matter of days. I say this with no impirical evidence and extremely poor spelling but FA1 and 2 were EPICS. Thats the thing that upset me most about FA3 it was just a little thing, it was a FA1 or 2 side quest.

Why do we accept so little these days and yet still applaud like its been a linear progression of goodness from Pong to Skyrim when to me its been two steps forward and a big step back more often than not.

Could anyone have finished Deus Ex in 2 hours ? (note. I have no idea and I did google it)

I think we are lowering the bar with RPG's in a lot of ways.

Why would anyone try to beat the game that fast? Isn't the whole point of a Bethesda style game to explore the terrain, find hidden secret stories told through the environment and experience the rich expanse of side quests and adventures to be had that have nothing to do with the main quest? I put hundreds of hours into Oblivion, and I fully anticipate putting hundreds more into Skyrim. I mean I get the idea of a speed run, but with a game like this, that almost doesn't seem like an accomplishment.

I don't understand Speed Runs in RPG's full stop. Something like a resi 2 in an hour or a sonic run in under 20 minutes, ok, but why would you want to dash through an RPG as quick as possible?

To my mind that's like sitting down in front of a glorious roast dinner, and stuffing your face so fast that you can't taste anything.

I know right, he has missed out so much stuff since he hasn't played the game before and this wasn't a competition to see if he could beat the game faster than a dev team rep.

On a more serious note, if you played the game several times (you know, like testers do) don't you think trying to speed run a game would be a nice way to test the game to its limits (that's one of the things I like about TAS runs on games for example)? Or just find another way to play the game to make it more interesting?

You know what, fair enough actually. If you're a tester and have to play certain segments/games over and over again for hours and hours at a time, I can see why a speed run is a new level of play. But for general people, I think it's sad, straight up. The worst thing though is when they actually build shit into the games to deliberatly cater to speed runs... *GLARES at an otherwise brilliant FF9*

You are right, a non-score based game should not cater in any way to speed runners.

I think it makes speed running more fun that way.

I don't speed run in RPGs, but one thing that fascinates me is when someone tries to break a game in some way or abuse certain mechanics. Some people may be bored with playing 'the normal way' (normal depending on how you normally play an RPG) and want to try something different. Speed runs are a great way to test the game (unless you are following an already made strat) or your expertise/skills with that specific game. It's a certain type of hardcore gaming IMO, on the opposite end of roleplaying (which I would assume was your main argument), it's metagaming to the max, which defies roleplaying alltogether.

It's a love or hate thing I guess, but I wouldn't discourage such a way of playing.

I don't get the QQ over a speedrun by a QA tester who no doubt already knows all the methods and paths to completing the game, while ignoring all the side quests. If Bethesda wanted to they could have made the main quest even longer by cutting out a tonne of sidequests but then ppl would still QQ mainly due to the fact that having a tonne of side quests has been a staple of TES games.

He's a QA tester, he's played the game so much he's probably sick of it at this point... So yeah finding new ways to entertain yourself with the game is a natural reaction.
