Skyrim Will Use Steamworks

Steam isn't mistreating anybody. It's a neat little gaming platform that gives you many social options. If you don't want those social features, just launch the game and ignore them.

You're always, ALWAYS, going to have people pissed at something about any game. Usually, depending if the game is actually good, these people make up a small percentage of the market and most end up buying the game anyways. Just remember, haters gonna hate, bitches gonna *****.

Yeah, it does go without saying. I do think it is a fair argument, though rather moot because Steam has set itself as an exception. I always am hesitant to install anything on my PC that I don't absolutely want, and if I didn't have Steam by this point, I really don't want it at all. Forcing some one to use a program unrelated to the one they want to use is akin to spyware.

bah, this might seem cool, but compared to both Morrowind and Oblivion, this is a huge step backwards. Both those games let me use CD-less options instead of installing securom or some other shit. By making it Steam only, they are screwing over a lot of people who don't want to have anything to do with Steam.

Note: My post has nothing to do with piracy. I just liked being able to rip my games to an .iso format and use a drive emulation program to keep things simple. Oblivion was one of the last games that let me do that without having to go online for a CD hack. One more reason why I've become such a Steam convert is because I don't need to deal with the disks at all.

Really? Oblivion lets you do that?

I don't remember it not working that way, and it certainly works that way now. The drive emulation program I use does have some emulation of disk-checks like Securom, but it's dated and doesn't work on most games newer than Oblivion. Even after the gobs of mods I've installed, including the new .exe for the script extender, I still need to "insert" the disk when I want to play.

One thing I remember clearly was reading some post on a forum about the DRM in Oblivion and the poster said something like "thank your stars that Bethesda only asks for your CD and that it works with Daemon Tools. They took a leap of faith in trusting you, so don't do them wrong." I'm paraphrasing a bit since that was 6 years ago I read that, but it was one of those things you remember because it did make me feel better about Bethesda as a company. That is what inspired my first post because Steam is a step backwards. We aren't as trustworthy anymore I guess. Thanks for making me feel awesome Bethesda.

It may have something to do with DRM and them not trusting us, or it maybe that they feel Steamworks with its surrounding trappings is best for their game. People like having achievements, for example, and steam allows for the recording and comparing of achievements not just within one game but for all games (that have them) that a person owns. If they are planning to allow mods on the console version, they might be running a slightly tighter ship with a controlled modding area (like in Civ V) and thus they could be using Steam for that. They might be doing it because the majority of pc gamers already use steam and of them most love it, so it is a smart pr move to associate your game with a popular service. Maybe they know it'll be buggy as hell (it is a bethesda game afterall) at release and like Steams patching method so they can quickly get patches out. Or like you say it could solely be they no longer trust their customers.

Best news I've heard all day. If this game wasn't already a must buy, it certainly is now. And...correct me if I'm wrong...but by using Steamworks, does this mean that Skyrim will be unavailable on Origin? Icing on the cake! Tee hee.

Yeah, of course. Origin only sells games published by EA.

You sir, are my hero. I won't stand for this shit-filled sandwich either! If I buy retail, with a disc, I want to use the DISC! If I buy digital, via Steam, I want to use Steam. Don't make me install shit I don't want or don't need. I picked my version, GIVE ME THAT VERSION!

People keep bringing up the "It's not very resource intensive" and "There's lots of nice features." No, maybe it isn't very resource intensive, but "not very" does not equal "none". It's not THAT much of a hassle, which means it's STILL a hassle. And I don't use, want or need any of the extra features Steam provides. Sure it's a nice OPTION, but that's all it should be, an OPTION.

If I don't want to use Steam, why are you making me? This is a monopoly and akin to forcing me to follow a certain religious view when I don't want to.

Aside from the fact that Steamworks is far less frustrating to deal with DRM software that's always on, it means that Valve's Steam service will be fully integrated with the game.

Again, what? Steam ALWAYS needs to be on, even if you just want to play a singleplayer game.

Not exactly true, while you need to be online to activate games via steamworks, you can go 'offline' by simply changing your mode to 'offline mode'. This allows you to escape having to patch your game every five seconds, but that can be turned off too....

Regardless, valve is trying to create a monopoly with steam, and I will not support them in that.

Nobody wants it except the developers/publishers.

Steamworks annoys me when I have to log in every damn day just to play my games, but at least it isn't as crippling as Always Online DRM.
