So Escapist, lately I've been finding it more and more difficult to sleep. I find myself lying in bed for hours , my mind wandering, yet sleep eluding me.
Recently because of this, I've discovered that having music on helps me sleep. I'm not sure why, but if there's a CD, or my itunes playing, I generally get to sleep alot quicker.

So do you guys have anything in particular that helps you sleep?

Not lying in bed for hours does it for me. I never try to sleep if I'm not tired. Then when I do feel tired, I am. It's then easy for me to get to sleep.

I've had trouble sleeping for years, the two things that help me sleep are reading and listening to good instrumental music[footnote]If it's calming enough lyrical music works well too.[/footnote].

Usually a full stomach helps me sleep that's why I always eat before I go to sleep.

I normally sleep around 6am...so I guess my advice isn't going to be great. But apparently a hot bath is good for sleep.

I concentrate on my breathing. I've had times where I can't get more than 3 or 4 hours of sleep, though, so sometimes I'm just laying there breathing heavy.

My sister find opening her door a crack and concentrating on the light helps her sleep.

Me, personally, I usually get up, go to a room with a TV and watch Adult Swim for an hour or two with my dog then return to bed. Also, watching various stuff (Anime, E3 coverage, Machinima, etc.) on my iPod Touch in my bed helps a lot.

Or posting on the Escapist... *looks at time*

Have some thea or milk. Don't smoke (if you do) right before going to bed, at least, that is my expericnce, keeps me awake a while longer. Avoid stressful things. Maybe read something. Take a warm shower. That's all I can come up with atm. Good luck! But you know you want to... sleep... sleeeeeep... sleeeeeeep.. goodnight :)

* Edit: If you have a partner, have a shag. Probably will do the trick also.

I usually read, or listen to music. It's not because I can't get to sleep, but because I'm always (ALWAYS) awake for atleast a half hour lying in my bed before I actually fall asleep.

I'm about to go sleep right now, actually, and say from experience that finding a comfortable position to sleep in is a pretty vital step, even if it's surprisingly easy to miss. Well, those are my 2 cents, nighty night

Music helps me too, although as a general rule, so does meditation. If not, I tend to imitate my cat, and go absolutely berserk-crazy, jumping around 'til I tire myself to sleep. And I even go berserk-crazy on my cat in order to get myself tired.

There's a guy I know who's doing some course in...I don't know, massaging or whatever, and he showed me this point in between two tendons on my wrist, and if you press it, it helps you get to sleep. I don't know if it's some placebo effect, but it works. For me, sleep comes in waves, and if I'm not sleepy at that moment, then I get up and do something for half an hour or until I feel sleepy again. It's better than lying in bed for ages trying to get to sleep.

I read my Java text book.

That usually puts me out like a light really fast.

I've been listening to music to aid sleep for years. Even have a collection of CDs to help (especially stuff from Hearts of Space, NatureQuest, Lifescapes, etc).

Currently listening to Enya ("Paint the Sky With Stars").

I'll probably switch off to something Ray Lynch-related after a couple of weeks...I need to find my copy of "Deep Breakfast," that one's incredibly calming.

Coincidentally, 'I'm so tired' by The Beatles began playing as soon as I found this thread. Couldn't resist.
I find that a glass of white wine helps in cases of extreme insomnia. Little goon never hurts.
