I wholeheartedly agree with this review

Quite an amusing little game, if you like heart attacks

Now if you'll excuse me, I have people to go scare

I played this game once. I was talking to someone I met like 2 weeks before on skype while playing. Let's just say that she heard my less manly side..

and what happened to the video?

I've played Slender and it does give you a fright for the first time you play it, but things get less frighting the more you play it. I'm not sure if that's just me talking to myself as I play or everyone.

As a free title, Slender is just awesome. Small download and free, unless you don't like scary games, go get this game!

Where can I download this? The websites download link don't work.
If the developer's site isn't working, you can also check out the game's fansite http://slendergame.com/ for more download links.

I was genuinely on the edge of my seat while watching the video (I'm not sure if that's a sign of the game design or my own cowardice). The thought of actually playing it is almost making my brain force me to run away like a maniac while screaming "NOPE!!"..... good review, btw!

And Paul Goodman was never heard from again...

Seems interesting. If I weren't such an amazingly paranoid pansy of a man, I'd likely give it a shot.

Ah, me and my friends played this a while ago. Filmed it. Learned a lot about myself really. Turns out instead of whimpering or screaming I shout obscenities and tell Slenderman to suck my dick. Very, very scary game. The most pages I've ever found is 3.

Anybody else hate that fucking bathroom looking place? Especially the random chairs. Scariest fucking chairs in the world.

Probably true for everybody.
And its universal for all things: fear wonder sadness excitement beauty eroticism anger joy. All feelings fade if we experience them too often or about one thing. When I first played through S.T.A.L.K.E.R it was the most terrifying thing, now it only has the rare jump. Remember the first time you woke up to Christmas? Probably not as amazing subsequent times.

Does one of the pieces of paper tell you to give him $20?

In other news Slenderman fucking terrifies me, so nope, although I'm sure it's a great game.

Am I the only one that finds Slender unbelievably boring? You're just walking around an empty forest looking for some pages. Appearances of SlenderMan don't make this game scary, they just make it hard to complete.
And the ending makes collecting pages totally pointless, since you die anyway in the exact same way as when he catches you during gameplay. The only possible motivation for playing this game is to see what is drawn on these pages.

I also like how you can't see shit without the flashligh under clear and starry sky but can see everything perfectly fine inside a building.

I´ve seen a few Let`s Plays of it, and yeah, it looks very, very scary, even if it`s not graphically brilliant. Hell, even that home page of theirs freaks me out...
But screw it, might as well try it out.
I mean, what`s the worst that can happen?

Funny you should mention that...
If you beat the game on all the different game modes (I think there's only 2) you unlock a mode called "20 Dollar Mode" and in it when you look at Slender Man a song called "Give me 20 Dollars" starts playing, instead of static, here's a video for reference (stuff starts happening about 1:00 in, best example at about 3:00 in)

After jesse cox did a video about slender lots of people complaint that he shouldn't have been scared has he found no pages so a whole bunch of people did videos showing that if you just wonder around randomly without any pages for long enough slendy will find you. Also jesse cox walked around roughly 15min without finding a sheet and quite the moment his screen got fuzzy, I probably say that he spawns either when you find your first sheet or after x amount of time, which ever happens first.

Scary? LOL! Startling, yes, when he jumps in your face on screen with the screeching static but its hard to create lasting fears with a character so easily identifiable and poorly created. Just a dude without a face, a badly rendered one at that. The sounds are the only scares I can find here kids. Go play a real horror game like Amnesia the Dark Decent.

Christ. When even the brightly lit, joke mode of this game still creeps me the fuck out, I know I need to stay away from it.

People should remember that there has been an entire mythos surrounding the Slender Man for a few years now. If you want to get started, a few good series on YouTube are Marble Hornets, Strange Aeons, Tribe Twelve, and EverymanHYBRID.

Hahaha, awesome. I've had it pop up playing less scary games before, I turned it off but can imagine it's horrifying popping up during a game like this.

I need to play this now, this review has swayed me. Nothing better than multiple heart attacks to spice up my evening.

The up close shot of Slendy's 'lack of face' sort of takes me out of it. This game is great, I just hope it does receive a few changes to make the final screamer a little scarier.

That, and I looked into some videos based on Slenderman so knowing what his motives are... is creepy to the point it's chilling.
You better go play a co op action game since having a friend with you can make things better and less scarier :p

xD I love the sounds they make when they get terrified.

Beyond that, this seems like a game that I could very much enjoy. A very simple concept: wander around in the dark to find some pages. Only one enemy and it's telegraphed when he gets close...but I imagine the relentlessly oppressive atmosphere must make this game a true experience.

On another note...what's the deal with this SCP game? Watched a video on it and it seems like the same kinda "Your only defense is to gtfo" type of game like this...only if you see Sack Boy from Little Big Planet he eats your face off. I don't know if the video of that game that I watched was being played by someone who sucks or if the game is just half-impossible, but it seemed...ummm...well half-impossible. Dude just camps out in the room ahead of you.

Why hello there, Zalgo. Not too bummed out by your cousin Slendy's seemingly overnight success? You never did catch on as much as he did.

At least you aren't stuck with a brother called Splendorman and a cousin called Trenderman...

I've played this ... made me stop after I collected two papers. Didn't even encounter him and the thought of him catching me forced me to turn off my computer (lol). I'm great with horror games, love them but this was the first time a video game ever actually held fear over me. That, and I looked into some videos based on Slenderman so knowing what his motives are... is creepy to the point it's chilling.
You better go play a co op action game since having a friend with you can make things better and less scarier :p
... I see what you did there. I'm always going to be a hardcore Dead Space fan, you here me?!
I hope to god that they don't screw up Dead Space 3... I don't want co op I just want to have it scary enough to feel tense while Slender keeps making me paranoid and afraid to go anywhere since I can't defend myself lol.
EA is going to ruin Dead Space even more, just admit it and your life will be easier

I hate this fucking game.
I hurt my knee on the table when I recoiled from the slender man catching me.
I'm never playing this again, holy shit.

I like how the ending, the player looked up sharply. Even though you couldn't hear them, you know damn well that Slender made them jump.

What is this sorcery?

OT:

Meh, I thought it was overhyped.

Fun but certainly not as terrifying as my friends made it out to be.

We played it all on skype together and one of them was wiggin his shit out. I made it to 5 pages and got insta butt raped.

ok, played it and it really scared me. i havent been so scared since FEAR 1. damn, how i jumped when this music jumps in and you see a bit from this faceless man. reminds me a bit of the gman in HL :p. always waiting to hear him saying "mr. freeman".

my first play through i found 2 pages and he got me immediately. just walking away from a landmark and there he was. coulndt escape.

my second i found 3 pages. already after the second he was behind me. the screen turning slowly in to a ant farm. turning around and i saw him. but i was able to escape. and this shock music again. so i knew he was right behind me.
then, i found another landmark and wile i was walking around it, he suddenly was standing there. another jump up from my chair. 10 secs later, he got me.

damn, for a free game, it sure is well made. now this is a horror game i enjoy. amnesia dint do this to me as this game did.
no, seriously. amnesia dint scare me on e bit.

This game has scared the living crap outta me and my youtube followers just love me playing it. :/

So yeah without a doubt Slender is one of the scarier games I've ever played simply for the immersion effect of it .

I know it's an indie game, and I've only played it once but this was basically my experience:

Got to five pages on my first try. Headphones, night time, dark room.

He doesn't move, so he's not really chasing you. I actually look for him so I know where not to look.

Slenderman himself isn't scary in the slightest.

Annoying as hell thumping sound is annoying as hell.

I actually got angry when he insta-killed me without warning.

*Insert Big Lebowski Meme*

Of course, just my opinion.

Meanwhile, I can't handle Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Oh the irony.

Slenderman just isn't scary to me.

I blame this.

I think you can blame $20 mode on the end of this video. If you can't that is crazy coincidental.

Of course, it would be quite f̢u̡nn͘y̛ if, with no warning, a new build was pushed which ̶r͠ȩp̶l̀͡a͏c͘͞e͜d the, frankly, poor quality Slender Man model, and rendered it inactive. You'd see him, and he would do nothing.

Is the game broken? Is this a trick?

And then you turn around to see Slender Man, in Crysis-style resolution, a completely different art style, and that's ģ̸̹̖̯̖̤̳͎̱͙͖̜̥̗̥̳͐ͯ̎̈͊̏͒͆͌́aͧ̃̏ͣͥ̔̐ͨ͒ͣ̓́̓́́̅͂́͜͏̴̹͖͉̱͈̦̭̬̺͚̻̰͜m̏̉̀ͭ̇͊ͥͦ͛͋̇͛̔̚͞҉̬͙͈̻͝e̴̡̛͔̺̮̟͍̪͓̫͈͎̯̪͕̘̼͚͆͋͋͗͛̈́͡ ̸̑̈̆̇̋͊͋̊͂͊͂ͤ̄ͨ҉̮͉̘̫̞̟̜̼ͅo̸̴̗͔͓̠͇͖̹̥̙̠̪͈̘͇͆ͩ͐ͩͩ̈̕͢ṿ̴̧̡͍̝̹̣̲̠̦͉̮̟̻̟̟͙̺̆̑ͪ̚͠e̋ͨ́ͧͦͪ̒̋́̔̔̑̾̎̀ͩ͊̀͝͏̛̰̹̫͔̹r̢͈̲̯̹̻̟͈̭̽̓̀̉́͘, friends.

If the model looked a lot better, and whatever algorithm for how Slendy appears is modified, it could be great. But I can predict a pattern well enough so that, I'm not startled after the first time, and know how to out run him better.

I can see how this would be a scary game but after watching Lani play it its hard to take seriously.

Nah, Watson still takes the cake for creepiest character to do that thing of "I wont move when you look at me"

xD I love the sounds they make when they get terrified.

The point of the SCP game is that you're not supposed to break line of sight with the thing, but you have a blink meter so you can't just stare at him indefinitely.

I don't get it. The game just isn't scary. Your a faceless camera on wheels that drives around finding paper nailed to buildings and trees. Occasionally a faceless suit appears and stands still. That's not horror. That's stupid.

To me, Slender just seems like a very poorly implemented "me too!" in the Slenderman community. As a game, there are many flaws, both major and minor. I really don't understand the popularity, especially given that it brings absolutely nothing new to the table, nor does it do anything better than any other game. (Now that I think about it, this game is like a worse SCP Containment Breach.)

Playing Slender just seems akin to watching the same screamer video on YouTube over and over.

What's the point of reviewing this?
1. It's free, the whole point of a review is to tell you weather or not it's worth your money.
Wrong. A review is the expressed opinions of a product by an individual or group, often ending with a recommendation and rating. One can use these reviews to decide if they think the product is something they would like to experience.

Also: My time > my money. I'd rather play a great game that costs a lot, than a shit game that's free.

I played the game and while I did find it scary there are a couple of things that, if fixed, would make things far better.

1. Something has to stop Slenderman from spawning right on top of you because you're directly on a corner/tree, it happens a lot during play and even in let's plays and the like. Yes it's scary, but it's also an unstoppable, uncontrollable insta-kill which is complete bullshit. If the previously mentioned method of removal is something they don't want to do because having him spawn on you like that is too good of a scare they can always make it so that the capture time is retarded (I say that in the literal context, not in the context of "this is shit"), allowing for a players pants to feel a great deal heavier whilst also giving them a reasonable chance to escapte.

2. The building/s in the game are really featureless (I had the game on the top graphical settings in case there were some decorations that are removed in lower settings), having nothing but chairs in them, although the tiled design of the insides (I only found the one building, I'm guessing I missed some, but this will be addressed more in my next point) give me the impression that they are public restrooms. The build of the game wasn't yet 1.0, so I assume that they're going to add the shitters and sinks in later.

3. A real lack of landmarks between the REAL landmarks (the REAL landmarks being like the "public restroom", the gigantic tree and the "Gas Storage Center" [I don't know what that area would actually be called, sorry], although there's probably more that I didn't find) which are spaced apart a great deal. I know some people are wanting to say "You're meant to get lost, you're not meant to be able to just know which way to go to find the papers", a sentiment which I agree with, to a point. What I'm referring to are more simplistic things; like noteworthy rock formations, Benches or water fountains and differences between them (say a lot of benches get placed around the map to decorate it [This is a park after all], where, for example, a bench has fallen into disrepair, a tree has "Harry loves Sarah" or something engraved into it or a fountain has received a gigantic dent which causes it to lean to its side), this allow players to become lost and think "shit, where in the park am I?" as they do now, but if they stopped and took a look at these telltale signs (stopping being rather dangerous) they could grasp their surroundings and head to the next location they think may have a paper(if they already know the park, meaning they've probably played a few times and been killed or having been running around for a lengthy period of time and have just recently noticed things, the former being far more likely than the latter). Not only would this stop things from being an almost complete navigational nightmare, but it would make things a lot more believable, at the moment there's trees, trees and more trees and a couple bare areas between locations, it's not something I can really buy.

4. Walkpaths. The Game needs walkpaths. This is a park, people go walking in them. The walkpaths should go between the major landmarks of the park, perhaps in a large circle (this kinda crap is in real parks, people play in them, walk dogs and other piddling shit that someone who actually treads into the sunlight would know more about than I), a long pointless walkway that loops around and shit (you silly-ass joggers), that kind of thing. You might be thinking "If people follow paths then they're less likely to get lost and can easily move around areas", this is true, so a mechanic would need to be implemented that made it so that Slenderman because a lot more "aggressive" (for lack of a better term) if a player is very close to the path, making players question whether they want to chance becoming a lot more easily lost, but having a less aggressive Slenderman (the current aggressiveness, minus the shitty spawn atop players thing mentioned in point 1) or dealing with a hyperagressive Slenderman (I don't have many suggestions for this, but I guess some simple ideas would be that he spawns a lot more frequently and closer to the player) and being able to more easily reach navigate the park.

As I said at the start of my post the game is good, but it's really lacking in a couple of areas, mainly just making me believe that this is a real park/forestry area, however the game isn't a 1.0 release yet, meaning I assume a lot of things will be added at a later date to make things more believable (like the "bathrooms" I mentioned), something that their patch notes imply they've done in other areas in the past, like adding a wind effect on the grass and trees, a massive improvement over having nothing but static and unmoving flora, it's simple but adds a lot more life to things. However, if it's left as is, it's still a decent game and with it being free it's totally still worth a go.

NOTE: I avoided mentioning graphics because I think that they're perfectly fine, they just need more details (example of what I mean; a lot of games allow players to make custom maps [I'll use L4D as my example, but don't worry, even if you haven't played it just think "Zombie Apocolypse"], but this is a zombie apocolypse, there are zombies filling the streets, but some custom maps are too "clean", as though someone just got through scrubbing everything to its brightest and cars are parked properly; everything looks like something out of a fucking postcard. There should be cars thrown about, turned over, broken windows, corpses in the street, blood and bile smeared about, broken windows in the buildings, messages scrawled on the walls [things that are all addressed in the official maps, because they know that this is something they have to do to make the world real]. This sort of thing doesn't require any improvement on the current graphical standard they've set and would actually be very little work.

EDIT: I just read a bit about Slender Man and apparently he takes his victims to forests, but my comments regarding landmarks and the like is still true, it would simply change the type of landmarks available, like making the walking paths much much direct, maybe one or two being long and scenic (spelling?), maybe a stream, a main road going through (considering some of the landmarks and that it's a forest I'd downright expect a real road going through at least part of the area with some short dirt roads breaking off to reach landmarks by vehicle (with Slenderman becoming even more aggressive to compensate for the easy navigation of a road and story wise because you're on a fucking road, can't have you potentially running into help [despite that being unlikely], but to make sure you of didn't just run down the road out of the game you'd make it so that approaching the exit would cause the screen to do the static thing, building as you get closer to the edge of level barrier, with the player instantly being killed by Slender Man if they cross it, this being far better than the alternative of sealing off the ends of the road with a truck, fallen trees, etc because it also gives the horrifying impression that he's keeping you in there with him.

The most I've played this game is about ten minutes. I only ever gathered 3 pages and I never even saw Slender Man. The atmosphere was too much for my fragile soul.

As for those who didn't find it scary, well..

nothing to say really. If it didn't click for you it didn't.

This game starts out heart inducing, but it really loses a lot of its creepiness after a couple of tries. Still a pretty good game though and I've been able to reach 7/8.

Played it and either the ony people impressed by the game are totally pussies (and everyone else just doesn't care enough to say something) or I am the least scared person on the entire freaking planet!
I played the thing and the only reaction I had when I saw the Slenderman was an annoyed grunt because of the statics. I mean, if you sprint regular, you don't need to give a damn about that guy. The only time I jumped up was when he teleported in front of me - which happened ONCE.
Otherwise... It was a nice, but freaking slow walk through the park for me. Quite literal. The forest looked decent for a free-game with a few hundred MB of size (even the random walls and the Slenderman itself look like ass) and the only bad thing is that you're CRAWLING through the entire thing. Would it hurt to make the walking at least... walking-speed? Instead, the sprinting is the speed I expect.

Either way, I was NOT scared at all - I was just admiring the nice (but slightly repetitive) world, was always thinking if I went down this path before (as there is no map or signs to give you direction) and that was it. Not scared ONCE.

I think funnily enough the seeing Slenderman is the scariest part of the game. I've watched a fair few LPs and people don't really start getting scared unless they see him. Even though I'm pretty sure I know how to beat the game there's no way I'm brave enough to try it, hell I've been playing Amnesia for months and I'm only up to the sewer.

Is anyone else getting headaches just WATCHING the videos? I think it's something to do with the combination of the sound and weird lighting that just causes my head to swirl...

I tried this game out. Couldn't even find the first page, mostly because for whatever reason the game doesn't recognize my mouse position. So I could click, and I could move, but I couldn't look around, I was stuck looking the same direction the whole game. So that pretty much broke the entire thing for me, but I'm glad I gave it a try anyway.

Scary?
I agree that showing you the monster's low poly face for a few seconds close up like that isn't the best design when the idea is to make the monster scary, but I also don't think that was necessarily the point. The point is more about paranoia and a sense of dread. Basically, the thing could jump you at any moment, and you don't know where it is so you don't have a whole lot of chance to get away if it's close, you're not always even sure which direction to run. Sometimes you don't even have a chance to get away at all, and it'll lose you the game whether you like it or not. You're basically at the mercy of the monster, racing against a clock that it can reset whenever it wants, and it feels like it's toying with you in that respect (which is entirely the idea behind Slenderman in the first place). Or at least I assume all of this is the case, from the footage I've seen, as I haven't been able to play it properly myself.

Maybe it's just that I was generally unfazed by and unimpressed with Amnesia, but I would argue that this game is certainly scarier than that one. Compare what I've stated about Slender to what we know of Amnesia: In that game, the only danger present in the entire experience is the Gatherers, which 1) you get full warning about about each time they appear, 2) they're easy as hell to hide from and you're given plenty of time to do so, 3) mostly if you sit and wait in one place for a minute or so, they go away forever, 4) if that doesn't happen, you can easily hang back and track their movements and just sneak right past them with minimal fuss, and 5) if you do get seen, you have ample time to get to the nearest door (assuming it's particularly close) and if you do get killed, you just start back at the front of the segment, so death is more of a minor inconvenience than anything. In Slender, death means restarting the entire game, which means the stakes are higher, which makes Slender more scary.

I haven't played the games, but I do fail to see what all the fuss is about the slender man and the Marble Hornets series. I'm disappointed by that because I like being scared, but I don't get scared by shakey cams or gibbon shaped statues.

SCP - 87, now that does it for me.

I don't get it. The game just isn't scary. Your a faceless camera on wheels that drives around finding paper nailed to buildings and trees. Occasionally a faceless suit appears and stands still. That's not horror. That's stupid.
You need to read the mythology to understand it.
You're* not your.
How many first-person games do you complain about being a faceless camera on wheels?
It scared me and most people here. It is notoriously scary and well done in my opinion. You're probably just smarter, braver and/or better-looking than everyone else.

OT: Completely agree with the review. Great suspense, great atmosphere. I've only managed to get one page though before I either terror-quit or get bored and haven't played it in a while since I realised that the pages change places. Might give it another go now though.

Would be better if he didn't insta-kill you at 5+ pages though I think.

Also, what do you guys do when you run out of torchlight battery?

Looks like a very annoying game.

Mechanic where it's dark. Check.
Limited vision with a flash light. Check.
Have objects blocking line of light. Check.

I think I'll get a migraine from frustration before I scare myself.

What's the point of reviewing this?
1. It's free, the whole point of a review is to tell you weather or not it's worth your money.
2. It's not even a game it's just a proof of concept and a poorly crafted one at that.
plus the review is half of a lets play, which mostly ruins the game already, you see what happens and how it works.

here is a cool horror game, let me show you everything about it ruining that first blind experience

I've played Slender and it does give you a fright for the first time you play it, but things get less frighting the more you play it. I'm not sure if that's just me talking to myself as I play or everyone.

As a free title, Slender is just awesome. Small download and free, unless you don't like scary games, go get this game!
exactly why this review is a bad idea to watch

Last night, I literally had a nightmare about the Slenderman, but more closely resembling the Slender game.

I've never played this game myself and I'll probably never will (probably), but I've seen plenty of Let's Play videos and I certainly shit myself everytime I watch those (I've never seen anyone actually get the 8 pages).

With the rising popularity of the game and the Slenderman mythos, I hope Funcom capitalizes upon it and make a Slenderman cameo in The Secret World. That would definitely kick ass (and make me shit my pants).

You forgot to mention the way Slendy doesn't actually appear till a few of the pages are collected, how your walking speed is slower than a game of Sins of a Solar Empire, and how he breathes through a Darth Vader mask. I think.

Ehhhhh... there are much better horror games. Ones which are free too. Or is the reviewer trying to appeal to "underground gamers" (read: hipsters)?

Game is just walking around and collecting pages and is actually not that scary to be honest. Very similar to this another first person freeware game (whose name I can't remember anymore) where you are a prison escapee and need to collect a few plates in a very snowy area. While scary cops (like, they're actually disturbing, they make this weird noise) and helicopters search for you. Wouldn't be surprised if the idea was lifted straight from that one.

For true horror try out SCP - Containment Breach. Shit is scarier than Amnesia and is random generated, all the while still being in Alpha phase of developement. Will appease the ego hunger for "le underground gamers" too since it's not developed by a big studio and isn't that popular (yet).

Why are people bagging on this game?

You do realise that the guy who made this game had about three hours to do so, and was in a contest-type area...so yeah he's done a pretty fucking good job in just three hours.

Like to see the majority of you code a horror game in that time...

How much time he took to make the game has nothing to do with the subject at hand. It still doesn't play well, it still doesn't look good, and most important of all, it's still not scary.

Simply doesn't deserve 4.5 stars out of five. Or is any game that has no real effort put behind it automatically good for it's "possible potential"? Or is it good because it's "indie"? Or "good" just for including "le epic meme character xD"?

I don't find slender that scary to be honest, more of frustrating, possibly stressful. It's like playing the annoying stealth section of a game. I get quite scared from other games and movies but Slender just feels to gamey for me.

i have kept playing it more and got up to 6 pages. and to be honest now; it wasnt as scary anymore. i just kept walking, trying to find the other pages and eventually he got me. made me jump still when he got me but it does lose its appeal after a time.
never the less, its still a good game. its after all a beta version. so still time to fix things.

Damn, yes. It totally ruins the immersion and it makes the game world seem distant and uncanny. Have you seen those textures? Very ugly, and this is 2012, ey! This game needs to be built on the CryEngine!!1

[/sarcasm]

Of course not. The game is fine the way it is. The darkness serves a clear purpose. If you could just see everything. The rest are simply coding or engine issues. Who the hell cares if it doesn't look THAT good, it's simply good enough to be scared shitless.

And about the purpose of the game. It only has one purpose; that's being scared. Of course it ends that way, it's exactly what it wants to do. It's about the buildup and being caught. Getting all 8 pages and then being caught is the ultimate achievement in the game. It's how you get there (and how often you don't make it) that determine the experience.

If THAT is its purpose, then it failed hard at what it's supposed to do because it is NOT scary. It has some jump-scares but EVERY game can have those, even "Hello Kitty World Adventure" - just let something suddenly pop up in your face and have a weird sound play. BAM, instant-jump-scare! Does it make the game scary? FUCK NO!

Is that picture for you? Because you totally missed the point. I never complained about graphics level. I complained that the game is boring and not scary while pointing out the logical stupidity of not needing any artificial source of light inside a dark building, while needing it outside, under clear and starry sky.

Okay. Yeah, that wins. Well done. Your post is like playing a text-adventure game of Slender.

Ehhhhh... there are much better horror games. Ones which are free too. Or is the reviewer trying to appeal to "underground gamers" (read: hipsters)?
What the hell does that even mean? I can't enjoy indie games without being labeled a hipster now? Jesus christ that meaningless term has run its course.

Hmmm, this reminds me that it's been a while since I've checked in on Marble Hornets.

Kind of awesome to see people doing things with what is probably one of the better creepy creations of the internet. If this catches on it would be interesting to see what could be done with this, and other similar internet spawned creations like Candle Cove (and actually most of what's on Ichor Falls) or the SCP material (which is awesome, and has spawned some minor games also).

The only real problem with the Slender Man "mythology" is that there really isn't one because there hasn't been much consistincy in building up the rules and such. Unfiction has a lot of speculation based on Marble Hornets, but nothing concrete enough to come up with a solid set of "rules" to build a game around yet.

That said the only real problem I see with a game like this one is that given Slendy's capabilities I wouldn't think he'd actually need to chase you unless there was a reason for it. Of course if I play and beat it, that might also be apparent. He's got shape shifting, hypnosis, and stretching, in pretty much every version I've seen, and god knows what else. Of course at the same time I'm not sure how tough he'd logically be on the horror baddies scale if he was fully developed because he's a fringe monster that relies on stealth and going after weaker targets, presumably with mind games and such thrown in, as opposed to the kind of creature that could hypothetically walk into a police station terminator style and kill everyone inside.

I completely concur. Look guys, real hipsters are very, very easy to spot. This doesn't mean that enjoying something obscure makes you one. Geez, if nobody was ever allowed to enjoy cool things that are little known, nothing cool could ever rise to prominence. By that logic, back in 2005 if you weren't some "hipster", Narbacular Drop just wouldn't be worth your time. Fortunately certain people thought otherwise, and we all know what that led to. Oh, and horrors upon horrors that Paul Goodman would take the time to review or bring to light a fairly interesting concept game that's absolutely fucking free, takes almost no time to download, and occupies a whole 117 MB on your hard drive! Look, if you didn't like it, fine. Delete it and you've lost exactly nothing, but don't slap labels on people who may have found it interesting.

Actually I think Slender works well as a concept piece. If expanded on this could be something pretty cool. The best part for me is the sound design. As a guy who's spent a fair amount of time in uninhabited wooded areas at night (don't ask), the soundscapes used just nail it perfectly.

Yes, yes it does.

My online friends already ruined the scary aspect for me by posting tons of images & videos that make the Slender Man look like a comic relief character who just wants a hug.

Littlekuriboh played his part in that too....

How on Earth did you have the time and knowledge to write all of this for your post? Or was your post attacked by a mod?
It's a dumb little tool you can get on the internet (I've misplaced the link, though... sorry) called Zalgo or something. It's used in attempts to make itself look more "scary", but once you know the secret it's about as frightening as a damp roll of paper towel. It's kind of pretentious, actually.

Well hey, that actually sums up how I felt about Slender too! Fancy that.

I guess it's baby's first Slenderman. If you're used to the image macros, stories and especially the impeccable Marble Hornets (not so keen on the other two video series), then Slender is a huge disappointment. Just a cheap, marketable cash-in that has the unfortunate side-effect of introducing a host of rather dim people to the usually great Slenderman mythos.

looking at it, the concept of the game is so simple. it is the appearance of this horror icon that makes this game what it is. my brothers downloaded it on my computer and i'm afraid to put my cursor over the program, let alone play the game. he got one of my brothers while playing and he didn't get any pages. i just hope talking about him doesn't make me a targo;afisbgnsb XZLKJb gbfas

I have to say, Slender isn't really scary at all. At least, not in my opinion. The jump scares startle me, but I never really felt afraid of Slenderman after the first time I saw that he was just an unmoving, poorly texture manniquin. Slenderman has always seemed a bit bland to me, even before the games. I just have a hard time finding it scary when there's very little physical threat beyond his "face" popping up in your screen, accompanied by some loud noise.

Still a well done review though, and the game does have some potential.

I've never understood why people find Slenderman scary. Maybe I've just been a fan of the Question for too long to find a faceless man in a suit scary.

I've been waiting for the right night off to play this game. I'll be back to read everyone's comments when I've finished creeping myself out properly.

(Actually it's not all that hard to creep me out. Childhood incident. Very sad.)

Hey, the sums up your post too! You got a trifecta!

That's a pretty big post just to insult me. You could have tidied it up a bit. Tsk, tsk.

In what could charitably be described as my "analysis", consider the sentence before it as well ("...used in attempts to make itself more "scary", but once you know the secret it's about as frightening as a damp roll of paper towel."). Once you realize that you can keep him still by peeking at him from behind trees, it makes getting the pages easier and that weird putty mannequin thing they call "slenderman" a joke.

The actual game, if you're desensitized to the Slenderman already, is really short and not a lot of fun. It relies on you being scared so heavily that without the scare factor it's kind of crappy. Anyone who makes it dark, puts you in a forest with nothing but a torch and sends something after you can make something scary. It doesn't help that it's relying on the otherwise very high quality Slenderman mythos to get sales for only a three hour long development game.

Even during the five minutes of the review any fear I had at the beginning got replaced by annoyance at the absurdly loud footsteps and constant thumping.

I've played the game three times and died three times, each time instantly. No warning, no idea where the Slender man actually was when he "got" me. It just felt like cheap deaths. The most I've ever got was three pages, and that was on my first playthrough.

The problem I have with this is I don't know where the skill is. How are you supposed to avoid Slender if you can't see him coming? On the other hand, it's free, and hopefully the developer will learn from its points - both good and bad - and go on to bigger and better things.

Thanks to Littlekuriboh, I can't take the Slender Man seriously. Does he want a hug, or is he just trying to be in your movie?

Chief: "Dammint Slenderman, I told you about eatin' them kids!"
Jack Slenderman: "But it's what I dooooo."

Where can I download this? The websites download link don't work.
I don't know about all things, it never stops being fun hating Ed Sheeran and eroticism's not gotten old yet.

This game is....

.. really overrated.

Horror comes in more complex forms than something so simple. It's pretty neat, and I applaud the upstart success of fledgling developers, but all I feel about the game is "meh". I'll be interested to see where these guys go from here, though.

"While there may be scarier games out there," Um. Name one? Amnesia? D's Diner? Resident Evil? This is pretty much as scary as the best the genre has to offer.

I realize you can't go "BEST GAME EVAR" cuz it's an indie title and AAA ad revenue is your lifeblood. But at least downplay the graphics, or the length, or the complexity of gameplay, or something else that is actually arguably one of Slender's weaknesses.

Don't downplay the one thing the game gets right!

Paranoia and Fear? Dread? Adrenaline rush? Tension?

GUESS WHAT, EACH ONE OF THOSE WORDS MEANS THE GAME WAS SCARY!

Note: Previous (I.E. censored) post edited to avoid namecalling. Thanks to the helpful staff at The Escapist for issuing a warning.

Anyone else find them self wanting to either join the team and model slenderman better(give him those wisp-like arms he was meant to have, and some neat particle/camera effects and stuff around the model, as well as a proper idle animation), or make their own version that is the same game just done in higher quality?

Make the sound that builds up scarier(something like the half life 2 radio music comes to mind... damn that makes me paranoid), have some better screen effects in general and improve the graphic fidelity of the game as a whole.

((on a side note, is slender an alpha/beta build of a proper game they're making or is that literally the final product?))
