My girlfriends habit was costing $120 a month. I told her that her money was going up in smoke at $1440 a year, and she conceded and finally quite a year 1/2 ago. Now she has lots more shoes and purses. But that's ok.

I don't smoke except on occasion outside on the porch using my pipe (I smoke Black Cavendish). A $10 bag will last a year for me. It lends a very nice aroma.

I do wish they would legalize the sweetleaf tho, havn't touched it in over 10 years but I don't see why it's any worse than alchohol.

I wish you all the best, it'll be a challenge, that's for sure. Maybe you'll be able to prevent it through force of will. My friend couldn't, he's still trying to quit 3 years later.
There's always giving your money to someone else (a significant other, perhaps,) and having them do all the purchases.
Hey, Eric, is that you, man?!?!?! Hahaha! He used to ask me all the time to buy smokes for him, and I wouldn't, because I hate smoking so much. So when he turned 18 the first thing he did was buy a pack of ciggies and proceed to smoke one at me!

Why is it okay that she spends more money on shoes and purses instead of spending it on cigarettes? It isn't any more productive than what she was doing before. You simply coerced with a statistic on how much money she was spending on cigarettes in a year because you didn't want to have to deal with it yourself. In reality it made no difference to you because she just wastes her cash on something else now, which she doesn't need any more than she needed the smokes.

Note: Any antagonistic impression given by this response was unintended. I simply like to dissect things.

I read somewhere that heavy smokers on average usually quit 15 times before finally quitting for good. So if someone says they quit smoking even if that person has said they quit like 5 times in the past, you should always respond positively, because this might be the time its for good.

Afraid not. My name really is Max. And I'm only 16, anyway.

Your motto...
"If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything."
I know a guy who says that a lot.
Out of curiosity, you don't live in Florida, do you?
Nope, I'm way up north in New England.
That was my grannie's motto too, she used to say it a lot as well.
And I won't even say how old I am. I know age is just a number, but every time I see that number I think..."OMG...OLD! NO, NOT ME!!!!! EEEEEEK!

Well, the way I see it, I'd would rather her having a closet full of purses and shoes than blackened lungs and cancer. At least its something material in return for her money instead of poor health and her money "going up in smoke". So I thought it was a fair compromise. :)

Nope. I'd prefer not to kill myself. It usually doesn't bother me when someone smokes unless they do it in my face or something like that. Or in the case of my mom/some of my cousins, cancer is common in my family (Lung and Breast), even if someone doesn't smoke, so smoking really increases the chance for them.

Cigarettes? Well I smoke cigars for the flavor. I only smoke cigarettes when I'm so pissed off I can't see straight. They calm you down a little when you can't afford to get wasted...

I don't because my allergies are terrible and if I did I'd be in a constant state of half-death and also because it smells terrible.

I don't smoke cigarettes, but I do use marijuana. Life is depressing, and it's a wonderful escape. I wouldn't try to make anyone else use it if they didn't want to, but it's a wonderful way to take a load off my shoulders.

I completely agree. But then, any argument in favour of more shoes and purses is one I wholeheartedly support!

Well I smoke weed all day every day, because it feels good? I can't stand cig's tho they're just disgusting. If I'm gonna smoke tobacco I'll smoke a cigar like a Blackstone or Captain Black.

Nope, I don't, it's too expensive and I know what happens to people who smoke regularily.
I actually tried it when I was younger but... just didn't like the taste. Guess I was lucky.

I never smoked, I don't smoke and I won't smoke. I even try as much as I can to avoid passive smoking on bus stops or wherever.
My reasons? I'm smart and I know the consequences. I also can manage stress (more or less) and don't need cigarettes to keep me calm.
There is the financial reason too.
But mostly I just hate the smell...Cigarettes STINK and make me nauseous.

used to smoke because i enjoyed it and it killed some time. After a while i found that i didnt enjoy it anymore so i gave up. I dont begrudge others the pleasure of smoking though
