It means shooting ahead of the target so when the bullet eventually reaches where you shot, the target is there also.

The only time I really enjoy sniping is in Red Orchestra because of the realistic bullet trajectory making it a much more skillfull art. Leading the target, shooting just above the target etc. all come into it. However, lag in RO also means lag in how fast your bullets get to their mark so sniping with 100+ ping is as much luck as anything.

Though, I can appreciate the skill and reflexes it takes to be a good sniper in less realistic games like CS:S and such where there's no bullet trajectory, it's just not really for me to be honest.

I used to snipe TFC (the old one, not TF2) all the time, and was very good at it. It was all practice, though - I was awful at pretty much any other class. Also sniping in some games is easier than others. Counter-Strike sniping seems hard because everyone has been playing that game for so long they've got it down to an art. The reality is that CS sniping is stupidly easy. Not that TFC was any harder, though it DID have about the coolest sniping system in the world.

TFC snipers charged their shots by holding down the fire button. As the gun charged, your character would pull the gun in closer to you. When it stopped moving that was full charge (there was no meter). A fully charged shot killed all but the heaviest armor classes - headshot or not. In order to actually shoot, you just put your nice laser dot on someone and let go of the fire button - one movement instead of two. TFC sniping was insanely fast because of this. Really good snipers did not stop moving their mouse to shoot - they'd just swing their mouse over you and know when to let go of the button. Remember, you don't need to be that accurate - a body shot will do it for TFC. Oddly enough, they weren't the most overpowered broken class in the game - that honor belonged to medics, but that's another story.

Fun tidbit: When you hit someone with a rocket or other explosive they would usually explode into pieces called "gibs." Hitting people with a charged sniper shot for some reason also had a very high chance (maybe 90%) to cause you to just explode into little gibs as well. You could use a console command to up the number of gibs that were produced if you had fast computer, which I did. It was very satisfying to watch them bounce around (gibs apparently have roughly the same consistency of one of those hard rubber bouncy balls - hey it was like 1999).

You'll be happy to know I only occasionally snipe TF2, and I'm Ok but not amazing at it. It's just not the same anymore. I want my pull-off system back!

All of my experience arises from CoD4. At first I really hated the sniping bastards that played and would get incredible scores just hunting them down. After time my stance changed. Sniping hampers your number of kills and requires patience. So the people doing it are usually those who get immense enjoyment from it. After trying it a bit and finally nailing some headshots, I can understand the attraction.*bink* .I rarely try though as my internet creates an impossible lag.
I get far more enjoyment from knifing, its exhilarating.

It's rather easy in CS because of the maps and all, many just fire wildly into busy points like double doors and side in dd2 and hope they hit, I did that a lot when I played.

What I don't get is how people can run around with a Barret in CoD4 and noscope everyone while running and jumping as the sniper rifles there are unaccurate as fuck if you're moving. I should know because I've tried, I can unload an entire clip if I'm lucky a bullet might hit the guy standing right in front of me.

It's because sniping in FPS games is unrealistic to the point of absurdity.

Allow me to take one of the most famous examples: The Accuracy International Arctic Warfare/Magnum (better known as the AW/P in Counter-Strike). A fifteen-pound sniper rifle that fires .338 Lapua rounds (delivering about TEN TIMES the kinetic energy of a 9mm round), typically mounted on a bipod to ensure anything resembling accuracy. However, in Counter-Strike, you can jump off a ledge, land, scope and pop off a shot within one second and have it be pinpoint accurate. And so long as you don't move while you're reloading, you're fine to scope and fire again immediately after.

Try this at home! Find a relatively large bag of dog food or cat litter. Place your hands under it and hold it to your shoulder. Now imagine that you're going to do this while running around and then taking shots.

Scope drift? Fatigue? Flinching from taking incoming fire? Who needs that?

And that's why I absolutely hate sniper rifles in online FPS games. All of the benefits, few (if any) of the drawbacks.

I think in games where realism is more of a 'thing' then it's more important. You wouldn't be happy if your pistol did more damage than your rocket launcher.

Well, you might, because you'd have a stupidly powerful pistol. But you might have a really weak rocket launcher instead and you'd be a bit miffed. It's a double edged sword!

Some poeple know how high the head is in most games and so keep the gun aimed at that level so from there it is only a left-right movement making it slightly easyer.

The other good one is equipment. I can't stress enough how good my choice of gaming mouse is (It's a razer for anyone who cares) because it's sensitive as hell and has good responses. Coupled with my reflexes (i can catch knives and arrows) the accuracy is phenomenal.

Some people are really good with sniper rifles.

However, the sort of people who shoot you as soon as you run from behind a corner are generally aimbotting. Either try to get the bastard kicked, or just quit.

I can see how people in CS and Halo do it after I started sniping heads for giggles in Crysis. Its just alot of practice really.

and is a one hit kill if you hit an enemy virtually anywhere other than their foot. Plus the rifles and smg's in CS take a second to aim... which is about the second it takes to be headshotted by an awp.

I cant remember the name of the game battle field 2 or something but I was a great sniper
this is partly due to the fact that it was piss easy there were hardly any other snipers maybe 2-3 including me per map and if you shot someone in the foot or any wear else it was an instant kill.

I have two theories

1) They get sighted, adjusting for height, and when you're in view, they pull the trigger

That's if they know you're around the corner. If they don't, and they still get it, then...

2) They're a race of super-snipers from another planet who have auto-targeting built into their genes.

Theory #2 seems a lot more likely, seeing as half of the FPS players can't snipe someone unless they're in a protected vantage point. Of course, they could be using bots, but I wouldn't report someone for being able to snipe you xD

2. In GAMES??? Have you ever shot or seen someone shoot a sniper rifle??? The recoil can break your arm! That's why they're not rapid fire. Anyways, if your shot in the skull with ANY gun that has the power to PIERCE your skill, there's a high probability it will enter your brain and kill you. With a sniper rifle, if you shoot, and it hits the person's skull, there's a near 100% chance it will kill that person. If you shoot the person's arm, and they don't get medical attention very soon, there's also a good chance they'll lose enough blood to have your arm amputated. Sniper rifles have A LOT of kick.

This should explain why snipers are so powerful.
