Just kidding. If I had to pick two, I'd have to go with the difficulty of classic NES games (IE: Castlevania), mixed with something like Silent Hill, a deep story to keep me going.
Closest game I got to this was Cave Story. Satisfyingly difficult, and a story I just couldn't help but love. Even had a "retro" kind of look! But it loses points because Ballos is the most impossibly annoying boss EVER. Seriously, it's not fair. I see people on Youtube breeze through the Sacred Grounds and cream him in under a minute, and I can barely chip at his health with the Super Missile.
EDIT: Oh, and Duke Nukem, with any modern day shooter, minus the crummy-ness of Duke Nukem Forever. I just really wanted a Duke game that was as big and interesting as Duke3D
