I have had one nasty virus. It was a virus posing as anti virus software saying I needed to get rid of a virus I didn't have. Up until the virus of the anti virus.

I don't get viruses with my Mac, but with all these software and hard drive problems I'm starting to think it's not worth it.

Yep, two years ago I couldn't fight the temptation to download the oldschool maze screensaver.

First thing I ever downloaded from a non-known source. Last time that ever happened.

I had a virus similar to this, if it's not the same one. Virus coders should be drawn and quartered.

Booyah, done it! I have stopped it completely from loading up on startup, now I just need to find out how to reveal hidden files since the bastard thing has hidden itself from normal view >.<
Windows XP: go to any folder, Tools, Folder options, view tab, check show hidden files and folders
Windows Vista/7: go to any folder, click organize, folder and search options, view tab, check show hidden files and folders

Just use avast anti-virus, it's free, it's good I've never had a problem.

I like the one comment saying "stop using windows" yes I guess spending 3 grand on a PC with a different OS is a brilliant idea.

Oh, hell, just dual boot it. Use Linux for browsing, things like that, Windows for games. It's what I do.

I haven't had a virus personally in years, but last time I did get one it was one that go through what I considered to be adequate security, alas I was wrong and ended up nuking the site from orbit.

Windows install discs are so nice when fighting nasty viruses.

The other day I had to clean a laptop from a virus that:

Hid all exe's
Didn't let me go to folder options, show hidden files/hide system files
Created links with the names of the exe's it hid
Unabled the antivirus
Infected any external storage device you plugged
Didn't let me run command prompt or task manager
Didn't let me restart in secure mode

What I did (after a lot of banging my head on the desk):
Searched in that quick search bar in Win7 explorer for *.exe
It found the execes and executed Elistara (Awesome just-run antimalware tool)
It enabled the task manager and command prompt
I ran the command pront and executed drive:> attrib -h -s -r /s /d (remove hidden, system and read only attributes of all files including directories and looking inside subdirectories)
Ran Avast (great for reboot scans) and Malwarebytes
Deleted those pesky direct links manually (searching for *.lnk)
Installed panda usb vaccine (it disables automatic run for external devices to avoid infections both ways and writes an unwritable autorun in the external devices so no virus can overwrite it)

I hope this helps someone.

Edit: For those saying "Stop using windows"

problem solved.
See, but then I'd be forced to use a mac (Linux isn't my thing) and then I'd have to take a screw driver to my temple because I shouldn't be allowed to have a brain.

We're playing the troll game, right?

OT: Last virus my computer thought it had? Chrome.

I don't care about OS's people use, use what you want that makes you happy you know? I just think it's irritating when people quote marketing and myths for why 'a certain one company's' computers are better. When they're not they're identical to every other PC so when people say 'better' I get annoyed since it doesn't make sense.

Hahah I got that twice now... Although they all just went away on their own. I feel like there sleeping waiting to wake up and surprise me. Mine would pull out a fake blue screen and then load my page back up with a message that said "Phew, we saved you there but it could happen again if you don't buy our premium version"

Oh the blame you get for being the one who uses the computer the most eh?
The best part is these people EXPECT you to solve their other PC problems.

It's not a virus, but it could have been one. I was writing a program to manage my files and make back ups and I screwed up a recursive call and it kept making folders with in folders with in folders. Not realizing this I let it run for a hour and well it was at least 5 gigs of 20 photos with copies of those folders going deeper and deeper, each folder holding 20 photos and a folder to go deeper >_>.

And the first thing I thought when I realized what happened was this

hoh boy, i had this one posing as antivirus software. i knew i hadn't downloaded it so i saw it as a virus, but it disabled my antivirus. when i looked on the internet to find a more potent one it popped a screen that said the site was unsafe and i couldn't go on it, so it was a pain to try and find some way to rid of it.

eventually i managed to get spyware doctor, the only one that was able to kill it.

Charge them for it. Seriously, the look on their face when you tell them you will but you'll need £20 to do it. Then they realise that the nearest repair shop charges at least £30 and begrudgingly pay you. Best...Feeling...Ever.
