So my mom tried to get me to come 'out of the closet...'

What is your all-time most awkward and uncofortable conversation you've had with a parent?

Mine is pretty much summed up in the thread title, but I'd like to hear from others.

EDIT: No, I am not in the closet. I just happen to be a female who has male friends, is interested in carpentry and masonry work, and who doesn't put having a relationship high on the priority list.

Well I have to ask... Were you actually 'in the closet' to begin with?? I'm going to guess not otherwise it probably wouldn't be that awkawrd (although still awkward...)

OT: Well I remember my mum telling me that she was perfectly fine with me being gay, although I wasn't... But that only got awkward when she suggested setting me up with a womans son who she works with >.<

I think this happens to a lot of people. I know my mom did it too me. It's still fairly funny though.

For some strange reason, my mom had to ask me if I was gay just because I never shown in interest in any women before.

*sigh* No, I'm not gay, I just haven't *found* any women that interest me yet. Do you know how hard it is to find tomboyish women the older you get?

Incidentally, I don't know how she would have reacted if I was gay. She has had some gay co-workers in the past, so I know she would at least be civil and even friendly with them but she also grew up in a different era, if you know what I mean.

Regardless, it's embarrassing when your own mother wants you dating pretty much any kind of women just so she can have grandchildren (and to be frank, I'm an okay guy and all but I don't think I'm father material...)

Well, I had a great (rolls eyes) one today.

My dad said: Does [Jonluw] have a deeper voice than me? To which I responded "Hell if I know"
My mom then concluded that I did indeed have a deeper voice than my dad, and then jokingly said that I was more of a man than him.
So my dad said: I guess he just has a larger, uhm... (searching for a word. Trachea, I imagine) ...organ.

Cue giggling from the entire family, except for me.

Edit: Oh yeah, and my mom has several times jokingly told me that she got me in order to get out of military service.

Oh hell! I'm nearly 20y/o. I found my very own tomboyish girlfriend about a month ago! :p How old are you?

OT:
The gay thing almost every one so far has mentioned. Pulled one eyebrow up.. sighed.. and shrugged it off. I have had 2 girlfriends since my parents asked, 3years ago..

My dad was convinced that I'd had sex with my cousin.... I didn't....

He probably thinks that because I'm the only one who's nice to her, and everybody, including my dad, treats her like garbage.

My parents actually never really suspected that I was gay until I did come out of the closet, but it probably helps that I didn't know for a while either (thought I was bi).

well im sure there have been more awkward conversations with my parents than this one but your heading reminded me of a similar story

my parents thought i might be gay for a while but one night i figured out they wanted to know (my dad is slightly homophobic) and i told them i was straight and i liked women. after a brief pause my dad said "so what do you think of your sisters frend? she has a nice rack, why dont you date her?" to which my reply was a swift cringe. i had known my sisters frend since i was 10 and she was 6 years younger than me, still in high school, and i have made a rule to never date any of my brothers or sisters frends (i have seen bad blood over such matters before). i took my sister and her frend to the movies that night (they needed somebody with a license to drive them) and when i got home my dad asked if i had asked her out. i told him no and thought that would be the end of it but my mom cracked in with "did you at least get to second base?"...

as far as awkward goes - telling them i was quitting university after the first year to get into social care threw them a little bit lol

reacted fairly well lots of tuts and eye-rolling but it's been about 6 months and they're still talking to me which is good :)

Have you given them any reason to suggest that you swing that way? Lack of interest in boys, a little too much time around female friends, a "butch" haircut? Or are they more the "she's not married yet, she must be a little *handwave*" types?

"Is your friend gay ?"
He wasn't but up to this day she thinks my best friend is gay, altough he had a few girlfriends; i suspect she thinks that for the way he dresses and the type of clothes he wears

Pretty much 'the talk' about sex from my mom. This talk occured when I was with my first (and current) girlfriend and we'd only been going out for a month... But I will say that that discussion helped me in the relationship further down the road, when we got to all the serious stuff.

My mum isn't involved in my life and never has been, I have never had an awkward moment with her.

Well there always the "I am watching two people fucking on tv and my mum is in the same room" (not porn, just on soaps or films).

Yes. Though, you can refuse, and instead have to do social service.

Or, well, it's a bit complicated now. A while back, almost all people had to do military sevice; but these days the military doesn't want you if you have a small injury.

Edit: Look, people, I was wrong. It isn't compulsory for women after all. http://forsvaret.no/english/Pages/Compulsory-military-service.aspx
