I found a redback the size of a walnut in my house the other day.
On my first day in Finland, I was jumping around in knee-high snow, and suddenly stopped and thought "I can't see my feet, what if there's a snake?". I'm so used to thinking about snakes, I couldn't even fathom it when I heard in Fiji that there are no snakes on the main island. All that foliage and no snakes!
I've seen fields of beached bluebottles, and they can kill you (they're not actually jellyfish, but colonies, but they work the same way), and blue ringed octopi aren't common, but they can kill you, and they're small enough to not see too.

The only reason I wouldn't move there again is the weird way internet is distributed. Living there put me into a strange internet rationing mentality.

But I'm already checking under the toilet seat and knockin' out my shoes every day anyway. Have been since I was little and found out about australian spiders and the like. Not to mention the one time a massive spider crawled out from under my bed and tried to get into my madfish haddock boots back in '05 and that one time two years ago when my dad caught a massive spider by my bedroom window, threw it in the toilet, forgot to flush and my sister sat down on it to later get a horrifying surprise... And that was BEFORE my dad got bit earlier this year and his hand swelled up and went red. English spiders may be smaller but they're sure as hell more bitey (Probably because there's less giant mozzies to keep 'em fed). Hate to see what a funnelweb could do...
That's still not the big reason why I don't want to go as much, though.

We're isolated from the rest of the world. Probably a good holiday destination if you've never been here, but not the best if you live here. You can't really travel to any other western countries without spending quite a bit of coin.
Our government is retarded(but then again, what country's isn't?), but Australia's government is a special kind of retarded.
It's hot. Very hot. It's only Spring now and temperatures have already climbed into the 30s on occasion. So glad I have aircon.
Housing prices are ridiculous, video game prices are ridiculous, the internet sucks unless you are really lucky with a good connection and download quota.
The bugs and spiders are not as bad as people make them out to be. Granted, I see Huntsmen(OPs pic) quite a bit, but they are completely harmless to humans, same with Daddy-long legs. Redbacks are dangerous but I haven't seen one in years(then again I don't go looking for them..)
The worst encounter I've had with any animal that wasn't in the zoo was a small green snake that holed up in a shell in our bathroom. Yep, that's it. :\
Don't get me wrong though, there are a lot of good things about Australia.
tl;dr: you're about as likely to encounter a Funnel-web spider or Taipan snake in the suburbs as you are to encounter a bear in an american suburb.

Australian here. I dislike this country as much as I like it. We are very well off here, nice wages and very few gun crime happens here, which is nice.
However, despite what most foreigners hear about the country, only about 10% of the people here are nice. Everyone else are yobbo idiots who drink all day and race their shitbox utes up and down roads. Our accent is god awful and sounds very moronic (Thank god I don't have strong accent) and of course, there's the game censorship.
Oh and our polititians that don't do anything at all other than PR stunts and bagging each other (Much like elsewhere but imagine it with a really cringe worthy accent)
Oh and the heat. 30 degrees celcius pretty much all the time.

I'll chime in to debunk some common misconceptions (many of which are admittely tongue in cheek)
The Deadly wildlife. Not really a problem unless you head to the outback. That big spider on the OP? That's a huntsman, yes its big, but also a big harmless wuss that will run from you. You should probably be more concerned of smaller spiders like the redback.
Game Censorship. In paper we have an opressive no R18 games regime. In reality, not so much. 95% of games rated R18 elsewhere are still sold here under the pretense of M15. Yes, younger people can play GTA here legally, go figure. 90% of these come here uncut. And for the rest, whether cut or banned we just import. For years its been more of an insulting situation than a real problem. Not to mention the R18 classification was recently approved, although bureocracy will make sure it will take at least a year before games are classified R18.
Things are expensive. Whilst this is true, lots of people just e-shops overseas (and skips GST in the process). This is starting to put pressure in our retail to the point some big names are starting to look at the grey market. Services do remain expensive, though, don't get sick here, seriously.
