I'll throw in my two cents... why not?
Prototype started off as a game that I was super pumped for. Couldn't wait. However, as we got closer to deadline, I got less and less interested. The graphics looked bland, the reviews were mediocre (or non-existant), and I hadn't really heard anything too great about it. Eventually I just gave up and bought it. I figured, really, what's $60 nowadays?
Overall I'd say I'm glad. The game is a power trip and no mistake. This is kind of what Force Unleashed should have been. You have a pretty crazy number of abilities and options, and it really is satisfying and fun, even if it isn't all that deep.
Some complaints:
- As you progress in the story, the game gets uglier, to the point where the city just looks bad. Mostly due to the red mist that covers all infected areas.
- For the amount of variety that is put into your powers, the game doesn't really have you do much besides kill things and the occasional glide mission. Not that you can't do other stuff on your own (and you will), but there are no missions for that sort of thing.
- The AI is... odd. They will flip out if they see you bench-pressing trucks or shapeshifting, but they won't think it's odd in the slightest to see their commanding officer run straight up a wall or fly all around the inside of the base. Note: this is probably done to make it reasonably possible to leave a base you've just infiltrated without setting off all the infection sensors, but still.
- The story is bad. The web of intrigue is interesting, but even that isn't so great. Especially when you get web targets with vital information like, "I like to run over stuff in tanks!" (really, not kidding). And the hint bubbles are damn near insulting.
...there are more nitpicks I could point out, but really, there's not much point. I'm really enjoying Prototype, and many others will too. I'd give it my recommendation.
And FYI: Anyone who compares this game to inFamous is wrong. It'd be like comparing inFamous to Crackdown. They both contain superpowers and sandboxes, but the similarities end there. A good way to determine which you'll like better is to figure out whether you like shooters more (inFamous) or melee fighters (Prototype). Speaking as someone who has both, I'm glad for both purchases, so no reason to think you need to get either one or the other.
