Because clearly everyone who lives in a country thinks exactly the same way. There are never any dissenters in a country who make their difference of opinion known through public protest. That just can't happen; we all agree on everything with everyone even vaguely associated with our country.

Anyway, the other thing I'll point out is that Muslims (not all of them, I hasten to add) hating America is hardly a new thing. And I'm sure google will produce plenty of rants that could explain why they might feel that way, and as an uninformed, non-religious, British person (though the British do experience some of the hate too), I don't think I can do the topic justice.

Let me just split two sentences up, to illustrate what you're doing wrong:

This is saying that everybody within Australia hates America.

Do you see how the second sentence doesn't necessarily follow from the first? Lets quote again what you wrote, to be sure I'm not quoting you out of context:

This is like saying that because the Westboro Baptist Church hates homosexuals, all Americans hate homosexuals.

However I agree with your title, "what the hell Australia!". I've lived here all my life and the notion that these Muslims, many of whom were no doubt born here, would actually engage in these protests simply beggars belief. It's crap like this and the Cronulla riots that force me to remember that even in a country like Australia there a dumb people doing dumb things.

Ok Allow me to clarify what went down in Australia, There was a riot of protestors upset over the film 'Muslim Innocence', and people were injured, including cops. the CBD was in chaos from all the protestors who were mostly of Islamic faith, holding placards saying behead all those who insult the prophet. goddamn even a child held one. But the rest of us were watching it going What the fuck guys.

Check your facts before you post OP, and the American Embassy is located in Canberra not sydney.

Edit: All though I got to say I know other muslims who were appalled about what went down, and nearly everyone else is appalled, so it's pretty sad that it comes to this.

While it is true that everyone in Australia is legally obliged to hate the US, the video has only caused extra hatred amongst certain groups. Most Australians hate the US for other reasons that haven't changed recently, so there was no extar hatred and they didn't bother to turn up.

1) CNN is a wretched hive of vomit-style journalism. They're okay for finding out the jist of a story, but you should probably look up the actual news somewhere else (BBC, maybe NPR - there aren't a lot of good USA-based sources).

2) It's not as many Muslims as you think, and if you think a few dozen Muslims picketing outisde the American Embassy reflects on the rest of the country or religion, you're as nutter as the extremists.

Salafists (very conservative Muslims) were heavily involved in the initial riots (which took place in a country where films had to be approved by the government - since they didn't know any better they just assumed the film was approved by the White House), Al Quaeda has fanned the flames, and there are Muslims denouncing the violence worldwide.

This is an unfortunate state of affairs, but it won't be solved via ignorance or implementing biased mentalities.

What, is it so unthinkable that people in ''freaking Australia'' might have an opinion, or feel strongly about something?

Now, i wouldn't presume to speak for my 20 million countrymen. And i don't like to make sweeping generalisation's, but i personally believe that it is the above arrogance/ignorance that seems so indicative of American's today that is souring our relations's.

Oh, and then there is the decadent culture we are force fed, and the fact that our own youths care more about the American election than our own. My own sister claims that she ''loves Obama''. She cant give me a single reason why.

Australia is strengthening ties in our local region e.g. China, South Korea. We recently entered into a military alliance with the Japanese, once our bitterest enemies. Our two countries have a lot of shared history, but we are undeniably drifting apart. I wouldn't go so far as ''hate'', its more like disillusion.

Personally, I don't see the point of rioting and protesting at the US Embassy. It's not like the US Government personally produced the film. Some asshole who happens to be American did.
