Not Cod4 in particular, cod2,4,5 and 6 are just the fps' that I've played online the most, so it's easier to take examples from there. Feel free to refer to whatever fps you like.

I consider camping to be anyone who sits somewhere waiting for enemies to come at them so that they can kill them. The most egregious form is the class of player that sits around corners with shotguns, the least egregious (the ones I have no problem with) are snipers. In other cases, it really depends. If you wait at a choke point just to defend it, you kind of suck. If you get to that same choke point, see a wall of enemies, and take cover to start picking them off, you're playing the right way. To summarize, (and to paraphrase someone, I wish I could remember who) camping is like porn--I know it when I see it.

If your story (about being stuck in a desperate situation with no time to reload) is an accurate portrayal of events, then that wasn't camping, that was the only way for you to stay alive. Whoever accused you was a dumbass who didn't understand how to keep himself alive through the use of indirect fire (i.e. noob tubes, grenades, etc.).

I'll camp for a bit if I find a decent vantage point, but once I'm picked off, I move. There is, however, one spot in one of the Bioshock 2 maps that is simply irresistable. You're surrounded by water, which people must pass through to get to you. When they come for you, you electrocute them. It's camping at its worst, but it's also damn fun. Note - I'm never a high score on this board when I do this, so it's not like I'm racking up points. It's just a perfect setup for a trap, and I likes setting up traps.

People who complain about campers are the ones that can't play. Every strategy, including camping, has a counter strategy. There is no perfect strategy. You get better by being able to change your strategies on the fly depending on how the game is going.

Any time you stay in one place and never move is considered camping. It's acceptable for snipers, that is, unless you play one on one, to camp because that's their job. Any other type of player who camps is just being a rookie who can't play the game properly.

Unless you're hiding and waiting for health to regenerate, although I don't really PLAY regenerating health games, so... yeah.

Most Campers can be flashed or just flanke. I've been told I camp even though I hard scope a choke point, which makes sense cause people don't learn or employ tactics.

Camping in the sense of finding a good defensive spot and then staying there is fine. In the words of the CAD Comic, "It is not the responsibility of a defender to leave the objective unguarded just so his opponent sucks less." In your case, you weren't even planning on it, but were in a good spot. And while all of the scenarios you outlined is camping, none of them are bad, just strategy. People tend to forget that.

However, other kinds, like spawn camping, are lower than low. Waiting in a team's "Spawn point" for freshly revived targets that, uless they have reflexes of about 0.05 seconds, are going to be killed, is just being unable to play properly.

Well to my mind there are various kinds of in-game camping (Not least of which the kind that involves tents in a peaceful forest and sharing stories around the humble glow of a campfire). Sometimes the best option is to defend, alot of online games encourage some leaving a base while others stay and this is not a "Cheap" way of playing that makes you a nub, holding out this way is often done in the gentlemanly way, finding a decent cover spot and holding out. The sort of camping that can be considered un-gentlemanly involves exploiting glitches, hacking or getting in a spot no man could possibly defeat you or even see you.

Camping is a legitimate strategy when done properly. Sniping? Not camping. Defending an objective? Not camping. To me there are two kinds of camping, and both are wrong: spawn camping, and choke point camping. You know the ones, sitting at the end of the only tunnel through somewhere with a sniper rifle. Those guys suck.

But otherwise, it's no different from rushing or slow and steady.

I'll go one further and say that only spawn camping is wrong, as long as there is an alternate route to the tunnel that said sniper is covering.
Skidrow in CoD:MW2 is the map that comes to mind, and there are certainly other options than running down that center hallway, like taking the side ally and knifing those snipers in the back while they are oblivious to anything not visible in their scope.

Oh, the players who are so close to figuring out how strategy works... They are neglecting to realize that an ambush sniper like that is only good if they aren't seen; shoot, then find a new spot.

Recently, while playing Cod4 (Underpass) I was under fire, ran into one of the houses and up the stairs. for the next minute or so, round about twenty players rushed up those very stairs, leaving me with out even the chance to reload, emtying my Ar clip, my pistol clip and a picked up M4's clip in a really hasty streak. After which I was accused for camping by someone whom I shot at least three times over the last minute.

Wow, did that really happen? You probably should have died from about the third guy who dared to storm up, or from a frag. Those guys have no one to blame but themselves.

I don't think camping is exactly as bad as everyone complains about. If you get killed by someone who's camping, then you know where they are and there's easily ways to get around it.

A guy was held up in a nice sniping spot above ground, behind cover and was prone, what did I do? I flanked around and shot his friend guarding him, and stabbed him. Camping solved. If he's in a building with a claymore guarding, fling a grenade in there, solved?

Sure it's annoying but it's a strategy. Do you think snipers in real life run around like crazy? No they lay in a spot and shoot till they HAVE to run.

I see campers often, never bothered me just need some strat to get around 'em and kill the bastards.

The only part of camping I hate is spawn camping. I know in MW2 that there are groups of players that know how to manipulate spawn points so they have every area covered and there literally is now way to get out of a building or a part of the map without getting shot by one of them.

It reminds me of honor kill farming in Warsong... even being on the winning side of it, it was the most annoying thing ever. I just wanted the match to end so I can move on.

So I am not playing the game properly, when getting into cover, fighting of a constant stream of rushers, because I use an Ar, rather than a sniper rifle?
In how many situations, in about every single game , with the exeption of battle royale, where your collar explodes when your camping in the wrong spo, are there no situations where staying where you are, holding your ground is not more effective thatn blindly pushing forward? Even games like Unreal Tournament etc, which play rather chimpansee, have those moments, where playing the game properly means holding your ground, even in game modes that do not make you defend certain positions.

Camping is not the same thing as taking cover, if you continue to sit in that room then yes, you are not playing properly. If you hide in the corner by the entrance, waiting for other people to get enter the building to score a kill then yes, you're a camping whore. If you are wounded and are waiting behind cover for blood to fall off your face then that's perfectly understandable.

There is no playing properly. I camp all the time when I "rarely" play online shooters. RUnning around like a fool is no fun for me so I stay still.

The fast-paced nature of Call of Duty would suggest that camping is not a viable option, yet it happens all the time, and some people do really well employing that pussy tactic.

To me, camping is finding a spot that is hard to notice and difficult to be removed from, and staying there for all or most of a match, I usually find it's a very cheap place to sit or lie and more often than not exploits the game's poor character animations i.e. being able to snipe over cover when people on the other side can only see the very tip of your head, and no gun, makes no sense.

I like to remove campers whenever possible, and when I do and move on, I'll find the same guy, using the same class, heading back towards that same spot. It's amazing to me that people can play the game this way.

Having said that, anyone remember the sniper battle in the jungle on MGS3? I would quite like to see a game-mode like that, that uses proper camouflage and stealth tactics.

oh and OP, that's not camping, that's running to cover and defending yourself when the entire team rushes up the stairs towards you. They sounded like idiots and there's many of them on COD

personally i don't mind campers, you just have to figure out a way to hit them, even when they stay cornered in the same spot ^^
(the only kind that i really hate are spawn campers... -_-)
