So.. What's with all the Gamecube Hate?

So I was talking with my friend about different game systems the other day, and we got to the subject of Wii vs Gamecube. He said that the Wii was honestly better than the Gamecube because the wii was more innovative. I've actually noticed a lot of people either hated the gamecube or considered it the weakest in the nintendo lineup, just because it didn't do anything new.

Anyone else see anything wrong with this argument? Almost everyone that I've talked to who think the gamecube was Nintendo's worst system (which seems to be almost everybody) has used this as their argument. In my opinion, the Gamecube is the best system they've ever put out. It had the best games, and easy-to-use controller, and a generally user-friendly interface. Plus better graphics than what the Wii has currently. I mean whenever I play the wii, I almost always play titles that you can opt out to use a gamecube controller (atleast multiplayer ones), and even the zelda title they released on the wii was better on the gamecube.

The N64 was a good system, but its titles do not compare to the gamecubes on any level (Except for mario titles). Anything the n64 did, the gamecube did better. So why does everyone I talk to consider the gamecube the big N's worst system?

I've never heard any such remarks, but I think the Gamecube was alright

It was built like a tank though. You really had to try to break it.

I still have one. The biggest thing against it is the tiny little DVD things they used. As for durability, though, it was tougher than a cinderblock

I loved the Gamecube. I don't agree that it had better games than 64, but it was a fantastic system, and I will have to say I like it more then the Wii. I still love the Wii a lot, so that's saying something.

Though I will jump onto the bandwagon and say that the Gamecube was stronger than a house.

I think it's only weak on the "innovation" level. As far as games, graphics, controller, ergonomics, portability, and if I'm being honest, nostalgia, it's a good system. I think it's the worst, but not by virtue of being bad. It's only the "worst" by virtue of being awesome, but not quite as awesome as the others. Least that's my thoughts on it.

I don't. I absolutely love the Gamecube.

It had

- Viewtiful Joe
- Super Smash Bros. Melee (Better than Brawl)
- Every Legend of Zelda game that was ever on a Console. Yes Twilight Princess was on it
- Mario Kart Double Dash
- RESIDENT EVIL 4!

Nintendo's worst system was the Virtual Boy. The Gamecube however, was a lesser console. It was much more powerful than the Nintendo 64, offering visuals on par with the PS2 and Xbox but unlike the PS2 or, Xbox it couldn't be used to watch movies or, listen to music. My Xbox was actually used as a sort of Jukebox in the early - mid naughts. The controller was also unique aesthetically. It had bulbous handles, the A-B-X-Y buttons had a strange layout, the C buttons were now a stick and, while the L and R had a Z, that's all there was as opposed to a Z and an...I dunno, W to go opposite the Z.

That being said, I did end up buying a preowned Gamecube about a year ago and I've been really happy with it. Hell, I play the Gamecube more than the PS3. When I played the few Wii games that interested me (SSBB and Mario Kart) I used the Gamecube controller and thought the games handled far better on the traditional pad than on the little stick (and WAY better than the stick + joy-buzzer). I still need to get Twilight Princess but have you seen the price for it new? Even preowned on the Gamecube it's still about $35.

Anyway: I love my little black cube and feel bad for ridiculing it when I could still get new games for it.

Well I had a Gamecube and thought it was fucking awesome my first ones laser for disc reading went bad so I had to get a second one. Then I got a 360 and a PS2 and eventually stopped playing it. I sold it after some very hard thinking and coaxing from my friends. I would regret this decision less if the friend who was the biggest naysayer of the Gamecube didnt start playing Super Smash Bros. Melee and complains to me that I was stupid for selling it.
I miss the ol lunchbox.

My only hate towards the Gamecube is that a total of four people's (including me) systems all were suddenly broken after playing the Mario Baseball game.

4 different games, 4 different systems, 4 Gamecubes working as they were before.

Hate it? No. The Gamecube is my favorite console of all time. It had fantastic games and wasn't total donkey feces on the 3rd Party selection. And it survived my crowbar when I lost in Super Mario Sunshine...

The Gamecube is probably my most favorite system ever made just because of the sheer amount of great games it has. Also the fact that it has been able to survive dropping from my shelf onto my tiled floor several times without breaking.

I had to manually start spinning the disks to get them to go and also had to beat the top down to make it stay sometimes. Yeah built like a tank. Probably if you wanted to break it apart.

On topic: I never had a problem with my Gamecube. Kinda sad I sold ALL my games to Gamestop since I didn't think I would be getting a Wii. Well not ALL 99% of them though. I kept Windwaker and anything Mario and Sonic.

The GC was awesome by virtue of having Luigi's Mansion, Eternal Darkness and Metroid Prime. It didn't beat out the PS2 but I liked it a lot more than the xbox.

What? I loved the Gamecube. It had Metroid Prime, Zelda collection (I never did quite finish Majora's Mask), Viewtiful Joe, Smash Bros Melee, and WIND WAKER.

Yeah, the Wii is more innovative as a system, but it's so out there that not many devs could use it in a way that doesn't feel like a gimmick. The system itself was much weaker than the others in the generation and the controller is very non-standard, so Wii ports were almost always inferior to the PS360 versions. Then it got a mountain of shovelware on top. It did have some amazing games (Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, Okami [yeah, I know it was a PS2 game first], Muramasa, and No More Heroes, among others), but it was kinda killed by how unorthodox the whole thing was. Innovation for the sake of it isn't automatically a good thing.

I'm pretty sure you could start smashing it with a sledgehammer and it would just stare back and say: "I ain't even mad!"

I owned a GameCube, and I didn't think there was anything horribly wrong with it. As far as graphical quality goes, I think someone told me the GameCube actually did better than the PS2.

The controller was...okay. It wasn't awful, but there were a few games where I would have preferred a different controller (one being Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, where you had to press 'A+Start' to access the Codec; the other being the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, where 'A' was to shoot, and 'B' was to jump, which to me, seemed like a poor design choice).

As to whether it did anything new, I would say "New compared to what?" It seemed like the GameCube, the Xbox and the PS2 were pretty much doing the same thing. The only differences I saw was that the Xbox had a greater push on online console gaming, and that the GameCube was the only system of the three that didn't play DVDs.

I'm another non-hater. It was my favorite console of that generation, and I still like it more than the Wii. I guess it'd be hard to argue for it being better than their earlier stuff, but even though third-party support was minimal, the games it did have were great, and it had the best controller Nintendo's ever made (and still one of my favorites anyone's made).

I meant in the context of physically breaking it. I can't say much for how long it would actually last, just saying that smashing it is harder than you might think
