Sir, I respectfully dispute your claim about soft drinks. How, you ask?

Bleach

Bam. Something worse for you to drink than soft drink.
Seriously though, I can see that happening. I mean, its just sugar water. You know what you're getting into when you buy it.
Bleach is healthy. It's mostly water. And we're mostly water.

Therefore, we are bleach.

OT: Yeah, soda is really bad for you. I'm not really surprised that it's worse that alcohol. A cup of red wine a day is actually supposed to yield health benefits, but soda has like no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It doesn't even taste that good. I used to binge-drink a lot of soda, but it was never a consistent part of my diet, so when I did make a habit of eating better, it wasn't hard to forgo soda entirely. Now, I feel kind of sick drinking it. It doesn't taste bad, and I don't mind the carbonation, but it doesn't taste good enough to justify the feeling I get afterward. Belching, burning, bleh.

Loosing weight is easy, it's a simple equation Calories burned > Calories consumed = weight loss, end of.
That's why the OP put on weight (or if you wanna get technical mass...there is a difference between the two) see he increased his caloric intake without increasing his level of activity to compensate.

If you burn more calories than you consume you will loose weight, and there is even evidence [http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/10/111031215938.htm]that shows a reduced caloric intake (whiles still maintaining the RDA of vitamins and minerals) can lead to a longer life. So if that's something that appeals to you then maybe it's time to put down the pies and get your fat ass on the treadmill[footnote]This is a joke BTW and thus should not be taken seriously by anyone[/footnote]

IMO being active is more important than diet[footnote]Within reason of course[/footnote] for example people on things like expeditions to the Poles or in really cold climates can need to eat around 6000 calories a day, and that's just to maintain body weight. Why? Well because of all the extra energy expended by your body to generate heat so you don't freeze to death. Your body is an amazing machine, but if you don't treat it right it's not going to work out so well for you. Everything in moderation, it's fine to have a super-sized mega burger with 16 ounces of coke to wash it down with provide you do something to burn off the excess calories. Anything that gets the heart rate up[footnote] AKA aerobic, or cardiac exercise[/footnote] will do, walking, swimming, running, lots of sex...pick your favorite.

*Edit

OP' I take it you are talking figuratively?, Coz you if you think think soft drinks are the worst thing try some hydrogen cyanide...it smells like Dr. Pepper

LMAO! Thanks, I needed that today.
On the topic at hand though.. I drink way too much soda. But my Teeth are fine! lol.. I really should cut down on that stuff.

I tend to avoid fizzy drinks most of the time now. While I can eat and drink what I want to extent without putting on any weight I've been trying to be more health conscience as I figure that since I'm in my mid 20s now the days where I can eat whatever may not last much longer. That and it seems that if I drink too much of the stuff it sends my heart racing which can very uncomfortable and a little disconcerting.

Physically at various stages in my life I've been extremely fit, and I've been extremely unfit. Neither of those things matters. I'm bored to tears by people who strain to make themselves far more physically capable than they need to be (for the purposes, of the life they lead) and then preen themselves as though they have reached some higher state of being. It's biochemistry - exercise a muscle and it will increase in power and reliability. Exceed your calorific intake and you will burn fat. Any idiot can do it, in fact you cannot fail to do it - unlike an activity requiring actual skill or practise, this is just a dull certainty. Train your body and it will respond as described. It's no achievement whatsoever, it's so immensely unimpressive and yet current pop-cultural values hold this up as a mighty feat. I just wish people were more concerned with the contents of their heads, and not the size of their arses.

As for the OP, unless you're planning to live forever, you are going to die of something. Might as well enjoy yourself along the way.

I drink soda almost every day because my university hates me and doesn't offer anything else that I'd actually drink, I usually don't exercise that much but oddly enough since I've been here I've actually lost weight, like a lot actually so I don't know if only soda is your problem.

I'm not an expert on this stuff and yeah soda isn't good for you either but I can think of way worse things to drink, like battery acid or bleach for example.

And yes, I mean even over alcohol.
I take issue with this. Why is alcohol bad? I've never understood that. It's fine if you drink it right.

Every so often on my facebook feed a post pops up saying how bad soft drink is which I conveniently ignore.

It wasn't until recently that I saw for myself how bad drinking even one can of coke a day is for you.

I've never been much of a soft drink fan, of course whenever I got Maccas or some other fast food I'd get the post mix coke and drink that.

But the supermarket near my house went on sale and they had 30 packs of Coke for $17 so I thought looks like an awesome deal I'll buy some.

Now almost a month later I am fatter than I have ever been and the only change in my lifestyle has been having one or 2 cans of coke a day.

For reference, I am fairly fit, Ive been going to the gym for a year and a half now and in that time have shifted from being a 63kg skinny nerd to almost 100kgs (bigger nerd) and I take protein and pre-workouts and all the supplements to do it.

After my coke binge though, I have large, noticable rolls of fat on my stomach that I can grab a whole handful of and my chin has gotten a lot fatter.

So I feel like I should spread the word to all regular soft drink drinkers out there, my brief exposure to it short term has done me the world of harm, so I can't imagine what its doing to anyone who drinks it all the time.

From today I am saying no more soft drink, I'm cutting it from my system completely (and I guess I have to start running now too... I HATE running).

Does anyone else have any revelations with food that they have come across that would be worth sharing?

For those of you who have trouble with reading: Gained 30kgs from a year of gym, put on some flab from coke with no specific kg gain mentioned!
IF you drink it regularly (i.e. every day) of course you'll see the effects as such. If you have one every now and then, like on special occasions or whatever, you're fine. So if you do buy a pack, don't drink 1-2 every day. Drink - at most - two a week.

Well, I've pretty much been living on that sort of stuff for at least the last 4 years and I'm thinner than I ever was before then.
I'm far from a twig but I'm definitely not overweight.

I know it's unhealthy either way, but eh, seize the day and all that jazz.

First of all id like to say i never met somoen who drinks coke a day every day, guess you were really into it.
Secondly, i call your theory bull. Last time i drank coke was probably last year. no, that was over 1,5 years ago in one expedition for lack of anything better to drink. Though i do fancy myself some kvass every 6 months or so. (closer to beer than soft drinks though). I have gained weight than you and continue gaining. therefore, your theory is bust. Now obviuosly i gained it for other reasons, thats the point, no way to measure if you coke actually did what happened to you.

ALso, if you get stomatch infection, drink coke, it kills EVERYTHING. no, seriuosly, it even kills hangover, i knew a guy that would mix Brandy with Coke and could drink 2 bottles (0,7l) of brandy in matter of 4 hours and have no hangover whatsoever. everyone i told this recipe to have said that indeed it worked for them. as i dont drink alcohol i didnt test myself.

People use Coke to remove rust from car engines.
Just think about that for a moment.
Its a strong antioxydant. ive seen people use toothpaste to remove rust and oil for much worse things. you give rust too much credit.

Yeah, if you wanna loose fat do cardio work such as running, biking or swimming.
Wait, so you are saying that my plan to loose weight by running is not madness but actually good idea? Well sweet!. Now if only it worked!

Depends if you drink soda with sugar or sugar substitutes, I guess. I drank around 2 liters of Pepsi Max(without sugar) for several years. Never got fatter. Went to only drinking water half a year ago and I'm still the same size(well, I have been working out).
Substitutes pushes the risk of getting prostate cancer through the roof though, among other things, iirc.

As for revelations... yes. When I decided to start working out I begun actually looking at what was in the food I ate. Everything is either full of sugar or bursting with carbonhydrates.
substitites..... arent really worth being skinny.... itsl ike those "Samrt drugs", yeah it will work for one night and leave you sorry for the other 50 years.

im the opposite. we couldnt afford sweets when i was kid and i would get more occasions to taste suggar than anything (suggar wasnt a guarantee in my household, we occasionally had some). now i love sweets, i love them so much that i now weigh close to 100 KG. I love them so much that im actually running around, trying to losoe weight, with a candy in my hand!

Well you gotta stick with it. Of all the things to maintain and build cardio is the most important and difficult to upkeep. By running every second day you will improve your body tremendously and will loose weight. It wont be instant, it wont be quick, but if you eat right and maintain a level of fitness which allows your body to properly recuperate you will loose excess fat.

Yeah, i need to do more of both, but hey im at least beginning to try. I dont care about fat so much really as about health. Im trying to losoe weight purely out of health concerns (im heathy now, but i dont like high risks).

Right here, and not just a can, I could easily drink a litre or two of coke a day (somewhere in the realm of half a gallon a day to American readers). I'm also 6'1" 150 to 160 lbs and while I certainly do not have sculpted abs no one can argue that I am even close to overweight.
Sorry, i couldnt ehar you though the screaming of the rollecoaster that is american measuremetn system.
No, but seriuosly, these numbers mean nothing to me. Liter i can understand, galon i can approximate, but thats about it. though isnt 6' quite small? i remember peopel saying that there are "8 feet giants" for higher people, so loosing 25% of tht would be like 150cm wouldnt it?
no idea about your labaratories for weight.

150-160 lbs is 68 kg to 72½ kg, 6'1" is 185½ cm. So skinny/very slender above average height.

My favourite soft drink tastes way better than the piss you call Coca Cola and it also contains 30% less sugar without any phosphoric acid. Only available in CZ/SK/PL though.

Sorry, but this is false information. A soft drink isn't the "Worst" thing to drink (not that it is the best mind you). Most research will say that carbonated, sugary energy drinks are the worst for your system (and they would be right). The soft drink thing is just due to childhood obesity issues in the US, and there is nothing wrong with having the occasional soft drink (provided you wash it down with water or brush your teeth, as it is hell on teeth). As for what is worse for your weight (as you used your weight as the metric to judge how harsh soft drinks are), alcohol is by far much worse for your weight.
