Wouldn't it be funny if this resulted in the most pirate-themed game in the series becoming the most pirated?

It is also disheartening to see how many people were excited about buying this game before hearing this apparent deal-breaker. I guess if you keep making it, someone out there will keep buying it.

Oh FFS, Ubisoft. This was annoying enough when it only affected the multiplayer but now single player?! Seems like a massive douche move. It's crap like this that makes me not pay full price for their games. I refuse to pay more than $10 for anything with their logo on it. I just got AC3 for $9.99 and I got a code from a friend to get Far Cry 3 for free. Who would have thought EA would wind up listening to the consumers quicker than Ubisoft?

Shit like this makes people less inclined to buy your latest and hyped up game, Ubisoft.

This sounds great, I can't run games from Uplay if it's online and Ubi's customer service wasn't able to solve the problem... well actually they decided to ignore me. So, thanks guys for all the features I won't be enjoying!

This is pretty disappointing to see, especially in what is generally considered to be a pretty good game.

You'd think with all the bad rep Online Pass shenanigans have received, Ubisoft would be more reluctant to use them, but apparently that isn't the case here.

It won't affect me in particular, as I'll most likely buy it new, but it still is disheartening to see this practice is ongoing.

Yarr, mateys. I be thinkin' that Ubisoft be done hoistin' their own black flag, and sailin' with the intent o' pillagin' yer wallets! In all me years o' sailin', this here be the dirtiest trick I'd ever done seen. Davey Jones be rollin' over in his locker, methinks. Yarrrrr.

A pox on you, Ubisoft. 'Tweren't for Steam sales, I'd have meself nothin' ta do with the likes o' you smelly lot.

If the mass of locked content behind many different versions on several platforms wasn't enough to convince me not to buy this game, then supporting BS like this with my money would be.

Seriously, Ubisoft: fuck off. Shit like this makes me worried about the games they put out, like South Park, that I'm still interested in buying. I'm half expecting them to lock off levels above five if you don't preorder the super, bullshit, 300 dollar legacy edition of the game.

You know, only to stop pirates. Totally.
When I first used UPlay, I thought it was a cool throwback to the unlockables of old. Then, of course, I realized the unlocks were in the game (which is fine as it was free), and that I'd never have unlocked it without online connectivity (which is not fine at all).

As such, I saw this coming from a mile away, and it isn't as if Ubisoft has had some amazing fidelity to the fans. So, I don't know what I was expecting. What concerns me, however, is what kind of BS they are going to pull with Watch Dogs. They've already got a bunch of pre-order exclusives in place that diminish the quality of the game otherwise.

I wouldn't be surprise if they did "Day One DLC" crap like what EA did to all Bioware games (yes, ALL: DA's Warden Keep, DA2's Exiled Prince, ME2's Zaeed [technically], ME3's Prothean).
Don't forget Shale! A fully fleshed out companion, with hours of dialogue and side quests, completely ripped out of the game... UNLESS you buy new and sign up for the Bioware Social Network of course!

EDIT: I can totally see in Assassin's Creed 7 making all the Present Day shit being buy new, seeing how they're trying so hard to make it barely matter.

On the other hand, that probably wouldn't be much incentive to buy new. It'd probably make people go out of their way to buy used.
Good catch! I modded the heck out of my game, so I'd all but forgotten. I ended up buying DA: O TWICE, Colelctor's Edition preorder AND the GOTY edition. I had preordered DA2, but the store I'd ordered it from went under. I missed the deadline to get the Exiled Prince for free, so I skipped out on DA2 until it hit a bargain bin, as a result.

So yeah EA, there's one case where I was still willing to buy your crap, but your own stupidity lost you a full-priced sale.

Anyhoo, back to Ubisoft...UPlay itself is a somewhat buggy and laggy affair. I'm surprised that these companies don't do a better job at making these shilling scams more attractive and streamlined/fast. The idea being that, by the time you figured it was a scam, you'd already given up all your data.

I remember Ubisoft doing a similar thing with Rainbow Six, IIRC. Free maps for disclosing everything but your social. That was a load of bollocks.

I swear Ubisoft wants to push consumers to the point of not wanting to buy their games. I know many people that aren't going to be buying Assassin's Creed because of the six month embargo for the DLC that is a PS4 exclusive. My friends that I talked about it wouldn't have had a problem if it was a month like what Microsoft did with the 360, but six months seems to be more of a punishment. Now add on the fact they are continuing with the Online Pass garbage that EA removed a couple of months ago (and to EA's credit any game that did have an Online Pass all that DLC is now free). To what seems to punish the used game market.

The only thing I am unsure about is if Ubisoft actually followed through with the always on DRM removal they said they were going to do before Assassin's Creed 3 came out.

Goddamn it, and I thought Ubisoft said that they were going to stop their DRM policies. They're just lying bastards, apparently.

Eh, I'm still going to buy it since it's a pretty minor part of the game as a whole, but it's still disappointing that Ubisoft's trying to get their customers to hate them again. I thought we could've had a decent alternative to EA for a change.

My oh my, EA has already dropped this bullshit and Ubisoft still keeps putting their foot in their mouths.

Tsk, tsk Ubi, you'll soon learn people don't like your bullshit, but I guess that's what you don't want to hear, right?, because "hurr durr, used gaemz adn piracy!".

Still gonna buy it. I don't see why taking out a minor (and honestly kinda shit) feature as a small incentive to buy new is such a major issue to some people. Also I'm just gonna throw this out there: so far I like Uplay better than Steam.

It's ironic that a game about pirates and their carefreee style of life is now under the oppressive, totalitarian thumb of the online pass. You know, to stop piracy.
Wut.

Yo dawg, I heard you like pirates.

So we made a game about pirates but took some of the pirating out so you can't pirate if you pirate.
