Someone please stop Tim Burton.

So I went to see 'Alice in Wonderland', directed by Tim Burton, a couple of weeks ago with low expectations and it was pretty awful. It did make alot of monies though so now he's being considered for a remake of 'The Wizard of Oz'. He just makes everything spirally and "dark". Now I'm quite biased as I haven't really liked one of his films since 'Sleepy Hollow' but I don't want him to piss all over 'The Wizard of Oz' too.
Do people agree or am I missing something?

Total agreement.

Sleepy Hollow was Burton's last good picture and Lord knows why he's started sucking so much afterwards. I think we all know who he's going to cast in The Wizard of Oz; Depp as the Scarecrow and Bonham Carter as the Wicked Witch.

I'm calling it right now.

Alice in Wonderland was awesome.
For once, there was a GIRL who had to go through the whole "The young boy grows up to slay the dragon" as it is in every other fantasy movie and it's dog <.<

Here is a small list of fiction with a female protagonist (off the top of my head):
-Alice in Wonderland
-The Inkspell series
-Buffy the Vampire Slayer
-Battle Star Galactica(Starbuck? Yes? No? Input?)
-Metroid Series

And besides, it's not that people dislike Alice in Wonderland, it's that people dislike that Tim Burton took a classic and butchered it. I'm sure nobody here has a problem with the original Alice in Wonderland

Never seen the Inkspell Series.
Buffy is meh.
Battlestar Galactica? All I saw in that series were robots and a bunch of men and like.. 2 girls?
Metroid yes, but is it a movie?

So overall, you counted up like 3 shows and one game.

This movie was a huge improvement in so many ways over the original movie that I have more or less traumatic memories of.
In all honest, anyone who actually complains about this movie deserves to be thrown into the lake of fire and acid UNLESS they come up with examples as to why he butchered it. VALID ONES.

BSG had a lot of important female characters. Infact, pretty much ever female character moved the plot an amazing amount, possibly more then the men. And Inkspell was a book series. But I digress.

I didn't liek the movie because I found pretty much all the characters (accept Alice and the Cat) very annoying, and overal it was a story that didn't quite need a dark and gritty remake.

You know what? I don't give a shit. Remakes seem to be the norm these days, Tim Burton isn't the only one. So while you're on this mission to stop him, please stop everyone else whose even had the thought of remaking films. I've seen a lot of good films ruined but I don't think Alice is one of them.

Okay lets count his "bad" films.
Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Alice.

Now let's count his "good" films.
Batman (Now remember children, we wouldn't have Dark Knight without it), Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Nightmare (Producer and Art director, may not have directed it but had a very heavy hand in it and is his film no doubt), Sleepy hollow, Sweeny Todd (an ADAPTATION by the way), Beetle Juice, Mars Attacks!, Pee Wee's Big Adventure and Vincent. Many people also liked Corpse Bride.


I think 3 films that aren't even considered universally bad is a good track record.

As much as I admire him as an Autuer he is going into self parody practically I mean Alice in Wonderland was a pure childrens film with not many dark themes.

Also I dislike how everyone credits him with "Nightmare before Christmas" and even worse a project he had nothing to do with: "Coraline".

You're right, they shouldn't be the norm...which was kinda where I was going with my last post. And for the most part, you post is confusing me. It's too early for me to think, the lack of punctuation isn't helping either (yes, lack of punctuation screws with my head...sorry)

I dislike the original Alice in Wonderland immensely.

Also I have no problems with Burton or how he does his shit. Make the movie, make the money, smiles all around... in a creepy way.

The character development was absolute shit. I mean it's not like the disney one where Alice is just running around encountering screwy characters, in Burton's Alice is running around meeting screwy characters that try to have a back story. It just didn't work.

I don't like Lady Gaga, I think here music is crap so what I do is I don't listen to it. Mind you I am now wondering if it would be more effective if I created posts saying how crap her music is and that she should be stopped from making any more music under the assumption that doing so the world would be made a better place... nah I think I'll just continue not listening to her music.

Moral of post, don't like it don;t listen by all means express that you don't like it but when you step over the line of saying things like, offender X should be prevented from producing article Y ever again, simply because YOU don't like it. Get over it you ain't that important.

I just returned from the cinema 1 hour ago, and I havce to say I actually liked the movie. Yes, maybe the hatter should have been taken a little less screen time (and the cheshire cat a bit more, he was pretty awesome), but I enjoyed it.
Was it a bit darker than expected? Yes, but I wouldn't call it emo-goth-whatever (it was supposed to be a depressing time in Underland, mind you).
Burton's aestethics are obviously right there, in front of you, all the damn time. But I knew that was going to happen! I won't go see a Tarantino film and expect 10 minutes to pass without a witty conversation about random stuff (Peter Greenaway, Guy Ritchie, Woody Allen, Robert Rodriguez, they all have their distinctive style and you could identify those just by watching 5 minutes of any of their films).

And saying he 'butchered' it is a bit dramatic, you can still go back and read the original if you are so fond of it...

Comparing Spielberg to Burton. WOW! That's a reach...like comparing a Corvette to a Cutlass Cierra. Really? There is no comparison. Burton sucks. I've sat through the first half of Beetlejuice 20 years ago and vowed never to look at any garbage that Burton spewed out onto the public ever again. And I haven't. I'm just trying to figure out how I can get back the hour of my life wasted watching half of Beetlejuice.

I like Tim Burton a lot and he made some of my favourite movies like Batman Returns, Ed Wood or The Big Fish... but he wouldn't know a good script if it bit him in the ass. And he actually said so himself. I don't really blame him for Alice as he didn't write the script and i prefer to hate on Disney anyway but it's true that many of his movies are only interesting because of their visuals while the script is rather weak. Now, in many cases i can live with that, i'm, after all, one of the few people who actually really enjoyed Avatar. But as a big fan of Lewis Carrolls Alice In Wonderland i really think his version didn't work. But, again, that's pretty much just Disney ruining the same book twice...
