They are called HD 5770, they cost about 40% less than an Xbox and makes your games look a lot better than the Xbox. You are not really a cheap bastard by getting an 360.
I don't believe or care in "look better" anymore. Things look good enough for me. If someone likes having to set each game with their peripherals and settings and use the keyboard and upgrade parts and feel superior, have fun, I don't care. I just don't care for that kind of experience.

Wireless controller > box with disc > screen = fun right now
You do realise any PC can be hooked up to a PS3 or Xbox 360 controller, right?
If you don't care for that kind of experience then fine, I really don't care. I however would like to be able to play through this, and the next, generation of games without having to pay through the nose- and that's the point of this thread.
If you just want to hate on people who have a better system than you because you don't understand why they'd want one... well, what the hell are you doing here?

Hell, the only reason I haven't gotten a new computer is because I'm waiting until I'm back home in the States, where they're cheaper.

I have been an avid pc gamer mainly because I enjoy the customization offered (of both the system, and in modding games, etc), and because the controls are vastly superior for most types of games. That said, I have been considering buying a console recently for niche games or games which don't really have a pc equivalent... Madden '08 gets boring after a while when shiny new Madden '11 is on xboxes, and racing / fighting games also tend to be alot better on consoles then pcs.

And through good use of newegg, you can create a computer which can handle (not amazing graphics, but handle) just about any game out today for around the price of an Xbox 360 elite, or whatever the new ones are called.

Or in the case of PS3s (and 360s if you fear for your discs), it's wireless controller > disc in box > start machine up > insert disc > install game > download patch(es) > play.

Which is pretty similar to how most PC games are installed these days.

Point is: the "because it's easier" arguement doesn't really apply, unless you run into a problem (hello, RRoD).

Cool about the controllers. When did I hate on people? If you don't care for my preferences, don't reply or read what I have to say. You have your reasons for wanting a PC and they're valid, what's the problem?
Did you even read your post? It was patronising and insulting.
I have no problems with peoples preferences, but that's no reason to walk over other peoples. I never claimed superiority over console gamers, as you said, in fact I was sure to point out that I still AM one. Make a valid point if you want, but we're discussing toys here, so don't be a jerk.

I actually plan on getting a HD 360 for installing games, so yeah. I haven't heard about the patches though, only DLC and demos and stuff. :/ Call me confused.
Some games do release patches, although for most console games they tend to be fairly small and essentually bug fixes (notable exception: Burnout Paradise). Of course, then there's free DLC on top of that which is more than likely be essentual in multiplayer games. Not to mention the pay-for map packs. Generally speaking (and excluding MMOs and MW2), you only have to pay once for your multiplayer experience in PC games, something which can't be guarenteed with consoles.

Me and my flatmate Scott had high end computers custom built from two companies, cost us £560 and £600 respectively, about £80-100 would have been "Build cost".

Not bad at all, really.

Then our flatmate Alex paid £1500 for an Alienware laptop that had 3gb ram and a mid-range graphics card. And, he uses it like a Desktop.

What a Penis.

Congratulations, you've discovered the main rules of PC gaming:
1. Alienware is overpriced.
2. boxed packages from mainstream stores are overpriced.
3. It's cheaper to put it together yourself or get an indie place to do it.

At this point I'm not asking for an apology, I'm just waiting for you to sod off. Jerk.

Anyway, can anyone verify my inquiry into the 5750 = PS3 thing?
I've been looking into benchmarks for Resident Evil 5, and it seems to run pretty well. Otherwise it's good to see a PC thread with a (minimal) amount of complaining~

Haha yeah your computer should be all over Metro 2033. Xbox 360 has a 500 MHz "Xenos" (basically a Radeon X1900), and Playstation 3 has a "RSX 'Reality Synthesizer'" (based on the GeForce 7800 GTX GPU)

Now for the rest who list "oh it's sooo expenisve" as a reason as to why PC gaming is "dying".
Well it is a legitimate excuse. To get a GREAT gaming PC it will cost you around $700 or more

OT: Good for you. Now if you become an elitist bastard, well I cant say it will be pretty for you.

Not at all, I still have all three current gen consoles in my house, and a large reason for getting the new PC was to help my fiance with her graphics design work~ Besides, I practically live on the handhelds.

Oh and Hateren, cheers for the system specs! I feel a lot more confident about that.

I just built my own PC at the end of April. It kicks ass, but at this point I've spent like... $2300 on it and peripherals. Lol. I think when I bought it I initially spent more like $1600. But there was always just one more thing I needed/wanted/had to get... but I guess that's just how it goes.

Yeah, if you know what to do, PC gaming can *sigh* be awesome, but for most average folks who are just trying to play a game here and there and don't want to spend upwards of $700-1500 on a good rig that they'd have to assemble themselves, plus the expenses of upgrading it over time; a one time payment of $200-400 for a pre-assembled PS3 (or Xbox, if paying $50 a year to enjoy online is your thing) that can play most games on the level that a gaming rig can is most definitely a good choice.

Now to tackle the hurdle of there being no mods or modding on consoles...

I'm a little bit on the pissed side, but as far as I can work out $700 is in the region of £500. For something that can do 3000 things as well as play games, that's dirt cheap.

yea, custom computers are cheap, you can even put near top of the line components in a computer and still keep it below $2k
if you want to pay to much, its not that hard, get an extreme edition pentium processor, some SSD drives, and a radeon 5970 or 2 and your comp could easily top 5k, but put a AMD x4 (or even x6), 1T western digital 7200 rpm, and a GTX460, and your comp shouldnt top $1500
shop smart and you will have a very pretty, very powerful gaming computer for 1/3 the cost of comprable computers bought from a store that still look like **** (sorry, most of those towers for premade comps look horrible, and have horrible air circulation, they are improving, but they still suck)
oh, and if something breaks, you can fix it easily for cheap (or free if the component is still under warranty)

I'm sorry, am I missing something? £700 for a gaming PC, and you're all nodding your heads sagely and agreeing wwith how cheap that is?

A new Xbox 360 with a 250 GB hardrive costs, on Argos.co.uk, £190. That's less than a third of what your PC cost you. A 250 GB PS3 costs £285 from Argos, and that comes with two free games. I'm honestly struggling to see what exaclty is cheap about the PC option.
Probably the fact that most people have a pc and would pay the difference for a pc they didn't plan to play games on. Think of a gaming pc as a computer plus a current gen console, you pay more for any pc than for consoles, what's wrong with adding a console's cost to it and getting a better system than any console?

Add in the price of a TV for the 360 and a PC for the internets, and word processing, and photo editing and all those other PC things you do and get back to us.
