They can't interrupt my games with ads if I don't buy the systems that support it. They're screwing themselves and every single developer who makes something on their lousy machine out of that cash - the very thing they're trying so desperately to wring out of us, appropriately.

I'm really getting fed up with being nickle and dimed by the entertainment industry. The twats have already made me lose absolutely all interest in television and movies; video games aren't far behind at this rate.

It is precisely what the smartphone market does. I should know, because I have a good half-dozen "free" ad-supported games on my phone. Some of which simply have pop-in ad windows, others of which do pretty much the same thing that Sony is talking about, albeit between levels rather than mid-play.

Yes, they also allow people to use limited versions of a given app with features locked away or simply not included, but the ad-supported portion of the market, particularly in games, is very significant.

No, what Sony is doing is FUNDAMENTALLY different as they are DELIBERATELY stopping the game to shove an obnoxious video in your face that you have to watch as it is so imperative you know when the stream of ads end. Putting some still and silent ad in the loading time is nothing, and more often than not is an ad for the very full-price version which I think would be the most effective use of that ad-space considering how it would be so naturally targeted.

Those free-apps are either dependant on a portion paying for full-featured versions, they are acting as extended demos and some more indie developers depend just on donations or is purely altruistic. Any ads are only accepted for their lack of intrusion.

The best thing a free game can advertise is the full game.

Advertising should not interrupt play at all or even the slickest ad will develop ire towards the brand for how it interferes with the game. Loading points are when you are distinctly leaving one area, the involvement necessarily disengages.

The more generic brand like Coca Cola should be in product placement. Coca Cola tries to sell itself to everyone, from 7 year old to 70 year olds. And it wouldn't even be out of place in older games (like Bioshock), that kind of branding can work. The soda-pop war are notorious for the HUGE amounts of money thrown either way by Pepsi and Coca Cola.

Yeah if the ever do that I am literally flinging the console on the garbage heap. I already have to deal with commercials I ignore on every single form of media out there except for gaming. There is advertising in games, but it doesn't interrupt the game to show it.

I don't even accept it in load screens for two reasons.

One: I don't know how long that load screen stays there if a commercial is playing. Did it really take the full 45 seconds that commercial ran or did it only take 2 seconds and the game wasted 43 seconds of my time showing me an add for cereal?

Two: I don't know if that load screen was even supposed to be there and not purposefully put in there to show me an advertisement. I only have the game's word that this load screen was totally necessary and not some marketing plug shoehorned in to make more money.

I can sort of see it in free games, if the game is add funded it would allow the devs to make a steady profit and then use that profit to create more content for that free game. However this can again go the wrong way, where you are bombarded with 5 minute commercial breaks every 30 minutes. Not to mention it being impossible in MMO's or multiplayer games unless it's at the start of the round or in a loading screen, for that see above.

This is madness, i dont want to be interrupted by an advertisement! Hell i dont even play online and now you are telling me i have to suffer stupid advertisement WHILE IN GAME?!


Im a long time sony loyal fan, but if it comes down to this.. im afraid im going to have to put my money somewhere else... and i also dont belive im the only one thinking this way.

It's amazing that Sony has missed the mark so hard, why not implement ads on like the menus or online screens instead? There is a win win situation here that they have totally failed to grasp.

It's amazing that Sony has missed the mark so hard, why not implement ads on like the menus or online screens instead? There is a win win situation here that they have totally failed to grasp.
Some things only work well once (in this case, the franchise = once). This kind of crap would wear thin real quick if it were in alot of games.

It's amazing that Sony has missed the mark so hard, why not implement ads on like the menus or online screens instead? There is a win win situation here that they have totally failed to grasp.
Some things only work well once (in this case, the franchise = once). This kind of crap would wear thin real quick if it were in alot of games.
I think all it needs is to exist in a space where it makes sense and doesn't detract from anything. It worked in pikmin 2 because it brought further evidence that the planet was some sort of post apocalyptic earth.

I'm going to sound like a total idiot here but I actually like when stories or films or whatever that are set in the real world feature things from our real world. I know lots of people say advertising = lack of immersion or whatever but I think it can hep strengthen it by reaffirming realism while the best way to break immersion is to go "hey drink mepsi or whatever.

Of course this sort of stuff would be really niche but I think it could work if it was given a chance.

It's amazing that Sony has missed the mark so hard, why not implement ads on like the menus or online screens instead? There is a win win situation here that they have totally failed to grasp.
Some things only work well once (in this case, the franchise = once). This kind of crap would wear thin real quick if it were in alot of games.
I think all it needs is to exist in a space where it makes sense and doesn't detract from anything. It worked in pikmin 2 because it brought further evidence that the planet was some sort of post apocalyptic earth.

I'm going to sound like a total idiot here but I actually like when stories or films or whatever that are set in the real world feature things from our real world. I know lots of people say advertising = lack of immersion or whatever but I think it can hep strengthen it by reaffirming realism while the best way to break immersion is to go "hey drink mepsi or whatever.

Of course this sort of stuff would be really niche but I think it could work if it was given a chance.

I didn't play Pikmin 1 so I don't know if it had advertising in it but I can tell you why it worked in Pikmin 2 (for me), because it was something I had never seen before. Now I've seen it and I would no longer welcome it in another franchise. I would be ok with in more Pikmin games though.

I think the idea that the planet was once colonized could have been explained in many ways. Advertising wasn't really required. Today, I look at Pikmin 2 as an ad driven game and wonder why it wasn't free. I didn't think that way in 2004 but I do now.

Because the billboards weren't intrusive. This is. You could look away from the billboard if you didn't like it; this, you're forced to watch it because they say so.

no, i'm not saying it should be done, and i'm not trying to cause a debate. just saying, they had a smart way of doing ads. Alan Wake also had some in-game product placement (the energizer batteries, Verizon cellphone) and it never detracted any of the in-game experience from me. As the person that Pikmin duracell picture said, if you're gonna do ads, they can't detract from gameplay.

Or they could release free games, full of ads. As a marketing student, i find this scenario extremely compelling.
