I'm starting to kind of dig Sony and the PS3. I have a PSP-1000 and love it. I just need to get a few more games on it. A PS3 definitely seems possible in the future. I just need to get over my hate of the Playstation controller. I have always hated it, ever since the PSone.
You DO know that you can replace the ps3 controller with a 360 style controller as well as a bunch of other 3rd party designs. The controller is the easiest/cheapest thing to replace on a console.

I'm amazed that they don't think the "It only does Everything" statement isn't arrogant. Especially when they keep taking away features while we keep waiting for features we were promised long ago.

Besides, it wasn't ever the ads that I thought were arrogant, it was always their dbag executives like Phil Harrison that always spouted the really arrogant statements. They just need to muzzle their execs and actually give the ps3 some decent support.

Still, I think Sony should've hired the company that did the cute alien commercials for the crappy minidisc: great ads, terrible product.
Where do you get them though? I don't want to get some sketchy controller mod (I'm against that bullshit).
There are a sh-ton on amazon. Some of them are flimsy but those tend to be the $15 ones so it's usually pretty obvious. I actually prefer the ps controller but a friend of mine has a ps3 controller called Shadow (something) that looks and feels just like a 360 controller.

]Dang. These were actually very amusing to watch.
i think he means the older ads, the ones with the baby and stuff! not "it only does everything" ads
Yeah, those were awesome man! That baby was so fucking freaky. It makes me sad to think there won't be that kind of idiotic things again.

ALSO, THE PSP SQUIRRELS. Oh, how I laughed.

Their "everything" slogan never sat well with me. It was like they were saying the PS3 could do everything you ever wanted a device to do and you'd be a loser for not getting one (so I'm a big loser since I never got one). how lousy is that to post an update for the system to remove features that served as a selling point for the device?! That's like a recall on your car, and when you get it back, you no longer can use the radio. What kind of crap is that? If it does everything, I'd certainly say being backwards compatible is under the "everything" umbrella.

Butler doesn't really seem to sell me on the PS3. He might be Sony's version of Billy Mays, but the sales pitches don't work on me. Like the one running on television now for God of War 3 with that whiny ***** in it complaining about her boyfriend spending more time on his PS3 than with her. I have no clue what this commercial is trying to advertise, unless it is saying that your PS3 will convert you into an antisocial video game addict.

MS hasn't done things right either with the 360, and who gives a flying dump about the Wii. I'm entirely too old to be messing with a Wii when I've got no kids, so I'm not even touching that. 360's backwards compatibility is a joke in my opinion. The stupid thing locks up on KOTOR, and that just isn't right. As for the difference in the controllers, the subtle move to keep the standard design of the Playstation controller was a nice move. It is nice to be able to pick up a controller spanning three incarnations without needing a tutorial on how to use it. That sense of familiarity works well in their favor, but really only appeals to customers who have owned PS1s and 2s. If the PS3 is your first, then what difference does the controller make? The differences between the Xbox and the 360 controllers are quite radical, being absolutely nothing alike aside from the main face button config and the thumbsticks for controls. I never did get the white and black buttons on the old controllers and was glad to see those get altered in the left and right shoulder buttons, but it still stinks when trying to play an old Xbox game. Then again, I grew up with an Atari 2600... just a joystick and one button, wooden paneling on the console, and graphics you can run on a calculator these days. Mem-o-ries...

Haha I love that guy. Seriously- I'm far more tempted to buy a PS3 now than I was with the old snooty adds. That said, money is the big thing that prevents me from doing so, since the PS3 had enough exclusive titles that is worth buying now (imo). Maybe before too long!

A bit of competitor-bashing is good if it's tongue in cheek and/or subtle. Ads become arrogant if it's too blatant or condescending.

On a side note, maybe the Xbox marketing guys should give the Microsoft Windows/IE guys some tips because the Xbox marketing/PR has been good but the latest IE8 ads are terrible.

OT:Does anybody else find it ironic that in moving away from 'arrogant' ads, they opt for one that ends with the tagline "It only does Everything"? Do they think that's humble? XD;

Don't get me wrong, they're awesome ads, and the tagline only ads to the awesome, but I think that the words "surreal," "abstract," and "pointless" would better describe their previous ads than "arrogant."

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I read the OP.
It only does everything=less arrogant?.....huh, okay. Time to find a dictionary and see if they changed the meaning of arrogant.
But honestly, I love the ads. They always make me smile. Plus the "It only does everything" slogan gives off a more...friendly? feel than the older commercials.
Plus I really think it will do everything at some point.

I'm no fanboy, but I really do love the Ps3.

hehe, Keving Butler already did a Playstation Move ad.

Its amazing, and actually kind of makes me want it:

Dammit Kevin, why couldn't you have waited to do that ad until January '11? I wanted NFL scores! And no I won't warn you about Cinco de Mayo just because of that! :p

Did he actually almost just sell me on the Move, a product I've hated and made fun of several times? Damn he's good...

Sony is still my least favorite of the 3 console brands, but the Kevin Butler ads are a step towards redeeming themselves a little. Good to see that they'll be sticking with that formula.

I look at the Move and I still see glowing sex toys in people's hands. With buttons. Because we all know that nothing simulates a gun better than a straight rod in your hand.

It only does everything except backwards compatability(which was initially promised and provided).

does anyone remember those terrible adds for the PSP years ago that had the little lint balls talking about how it was carpet that you could watch outside? Who thought that was good marketing?

This is the kind of advertising that moves units. Humour helps it stick in the mind, and the brand name is hard to miss. Make it abstract, and people will remember the ad and not the product.

Throw me in on the side of "It only does everything" as still being arrogant. Also weren't the new ad campaigns introduced when the price drop happened? And thus that might be more of a reason why the sales went up? Or possibly a combination of both?
