I don't think sony or microsoft have to worry about nintendo any more, with game sales dropping and publishers pulling out, the system king might burn out soon.
Just wait 'till the next Zelda. The sales will skyrocket again.

If the PS3 is picking up on sales speed and the PS2 is well and truly in decline, would it kill them to add backwards compatibility (PS2) now? Please?

Ultimately, it does seem that the PS3 will probably overtake the 360, although it won't overtake the Wii in the near future, considering that Nintendo is wheeling out the big guns over the next 12 months.

Swinging in their favor? Er, what evidence is that, Sony? The PS3 selling less than 200K and the PSP being outsold by the PS2?

Nothing will convince me to buy PS3 and even use it side-by-side with my PC. I wintessed several serious hardware failures on that console, and only cure was to either get a brand new one or send it to get repaired and watch paint dry for a month or so, you can't just simply but and install new GPU or DVD player if it breaks, the whole thing must go.

Hrm... man working for company says that his company will beat other company? NEWS!!

I don't blame you for posting it, but I'm always a little entertained by headlines which say "Company X: We are the best".

OT: I enjoy my PS3, but if I had to choose, I would still be buying a 360. But maybe that's just me.

Didn't the PS2 also have a similar launch? Being quite slow I mean.
That's true, yes, the PS1, PS2, and PS3 all had similar launches with slow starts but faster pickup , with the PS3 actually selling at a faster overall rate than either the PS1 or PS2. If VGChartz would let me find the damn graph generator it'd be easier to show.

Data's good, and it's even better with context - you'd be hard pressed to find anyone from that time who'd describe either PS1 or 2 as a slow burn.

For ex., check out the year 2000 and the release of the Playstation 2 - demand exceeded production, and the PS2 was sold out. I remember failing when I tried to pick one up for the US launch.

That's not a slow burn for a console start, and certainly nothing like the first few years of the PS3.

Lets just hope they don't get too ahead of themselves and mess everything up! I think the PS3 has been doing well for a while now ^_^

Ah, yes yes, I remember from the last time I checked it. The PS2 and PS1 did sell at a faster rate after they were released and then slowly burned down. The PS3 was the opposite, starting slow but gradually going faster eventually selling at a faster rate than the PS2/PS1 did during their respective times.

Though you'd be hard pressed to find any hyped up console on release day/week.

It is quite good to be a gamer right now.

Still haven't seen the PS3 live up to its promise of better looking games, but whatever. I agree that sales are improving, and its reaching a larger audience, but will it overtake the 360? Unlikely.

I don't care about anything that comes out of anyone's mouth who comes from SCEE, unless it's t apologise for being so godawfully crap. If people are going to go for the PS3 as the "de facto purchase" for game consoles, Mr. House, then maybe it's about time you started looking at the introduction of functional customer service as a viable business strategy.

Not surprising that this is coming from a company man, but I have to agree. Not only is the PS3 looking stronger by the day, but their most direct rival in Microsoft is looking weaker for having lost several exclusivity deals with various studios either for the lump sum of their production or for specific console-selling games, with Mass Effect 2 being just the most recent example. I think unless Microsoft pulls some amazing rabbits out of their hats, they may have to settle for third place this holiday season.

If I weren't going back to college I'd probably be getting a PS3, but I have to admit the marketing campaign for the slim version (you know, the one that says "it only does EVERYTHING") really put me off because the slim version could do so much less. It was like a corporate induced doublethink. And everyone fell for it.

Come to think of it, I'm still pretty torn between a 360 and ps3; my wii quietly gathers dust while my ps2 and pc get all the action in the house. I'd just stick with my PC but there aren't enough games coming out for it.
