And then Tretton sealed the deal by announcing the release date and official name for NGP...
Wait, he didn't?
If he is going to have some "fighting talk" like that then he'd better put his money where his mouth is. Anyone can talk shit, WHY is everything to do with the NGP/PSP2 still so unofficial:
-no name
-no release date, not even a target year
-no actual game commitments
So I think Sony should either quit the trash talk or at least swiftly back it up with something tangible. Some actual NEWS!
On Topic of Sony's bashing:
I view the 3DS like the same way GBA was to the Game Boy; a necessary evolution but doomed to obscuritylive in its older brother's shadow.
I see the 3DS as a great maturation of the essential DS design concept but I don't think it will be as successful. Nintendo DS will sell gangbusters, the 3DS is for the "Nintendo core" and is going to likely deliver the best transitions of console games; just like GBA was like an encore for the SNES not just in re-releasing classic SNES games but as a continuum. The 'metroidvania' type side-scrolling games kicked off by Symphony of the Night and Super Metroid was really continued on GBA more than home consoles.
For the record, the lenticular 3D in 3DS IS a gimmick but gimmicks should be seen as neutral, not negative!
3DS really be what many people wanted the DS to be:
-better touch screen (can use a finger)
-wider screen better for FPS games
-focused more to core gamers
-100% support for DL small-cheap-fun games
-better online multiplayer
-greater 3rd party involvement
-more robust 3D engine, it may be little more powerful than PSP but the important thing is it's got enough oomph to render 3D environments without huge compromises.
Predictions:
-regular Nintendo DS (all variants, just like) will remain Nintendo's big bread-winner, it has so many variations in size and utlimately appeals to the broad demographic with something simple and relatively unique.
-3DS will do well but no where near as good as NDS, it will have a core following, get a few classic games and earn its place in the gaming hall of fame.
-3DS will (like the GBA) get a VERY BELATED major upgrade that completely remedies most of the concerns and all of a sudden make it a hugely desirable platform, just like GBA was an evolution of Game Boy but not quite there, the SP revision was what tipped people over and
-People will stop caring about the 3D capability, most will turn it off to save battery power and/or get higher fidelity graphics. I don't think the 3D movie content deals will follow through, due to the lack of content that means the little content there is the investors will demand high prices to guarantee returns. It'll be like 360 face plates. A few games might try being clever with 3D, using the lenticular effect for other means, but 3D requires MULTI INDUSTRY WIDE CONSENSUS! And that ain't gonna happen. This happens EVERY TIME a 3D technology is introduced, the problem is the media won't scale.
