So a copy of a PC changed gaming forever? What?

CD/DVD drive, online play for the first time? What?

I will say they did have the eye toy first, I think.
Yes we all know about the PC, this is for CONSOLES...not PC...CONSOLES. We all know PC gaming had online way before consoles did, but the PS2 did it first on consoles! Eesh! Read!

OT: Yeh i agree with this, defiantly changed console gaming in my eyes anyway.
Eesh!

With a title like- 'Sony: PS2 "Forever Changed" Gaming' what was I thinking?! It then listed why...'CD/DVD drive, online play for the first time' I must be ape shit crazy to have posted what I did!

I did read it. Sorry for the way I put it, this is the first time I kinda want to stick up for the PC gamers. I am not a PC gamer, but I don't get what the PS2 did that computers didn't.
It didn't do anything computers didn't, it's just it was the first time that Consoles did this, which is why everyone was like "OMG!!!!!!!!!!"

You have to realise that ages ago when consoles came out, people didn't think they would last long, so then the PS2 comes along and shows off that it can finally do these things, which then laid the foundation for other Consoles to start using this technology, expanding the Console market. and finally making it's stamp.

Personally i really do believe that Sony and the PS2 did change the console market, and I'm a 360 gamer.

Wait...wasn't the Dreamcast the first to offer online connectivity and gameplay in terms of home consoles? *puzzled*.
Technically it was the Sega Genesis which featured two games that could be played phone jack LAN.

If you really want to be technical the Japanese NES had internet acces. You could buy groceries off the damn thing.

Perhaps the greatest testament to the console's success is that it's still being manufactured and sold new today, and games are still being released in its format. In fact, Sony just announced a new bundle [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104565-Sony-Announces-New-PS2-Bundle] for the decade old console. That kind of longevity is something which Nintendo or Microsoft can only dream of accomplishing with their consoles.
This is news? Granted, that may be impressive in the west, but the NES only went out of production in 2003 in japan. (and arrived in 1983 - That's 20 years.)

Old consoles survive for ages in japan.

Anyway...

I don't see anything technically impressive about the PS2. It's just too obvious a progression from what came before it.

But credit where credit's due, it was spectacularly successful.

"When the platform launched back in October 2000, the industry was forever changed by the introduction of a device that came built in with a DVD/CD player and offered Internet connectivity and online gameplay for the very first time," Tretton said.
Wrong! In fact, Sega's Dreamcast was the first to offer online gameplay and the CD player was a feature in every PS1. So, the only truth here is that it offer a DVD player.

"The PS2 went on to introduce brand new entertainment formats, such as motion technology with the EyeToy and has broken several industry milestones, such as being the first game console to hit 50 million units in North America," he continued.
Nintendo invented the camera for the gameboy in 1998. The Eyetoy was late to the party.
Didn't the Dreamcast flop?
So? It didn't say the first SUCCESSFUL console to pull online but only THE FIRST. Ergo, it's wrong.

And the Eyetoy wasn't a camera, how do you compare 2 completely different things?
It basically does the same thing... only one was black and white. For someone that owned both of them, it pretty much apparent. It's like comparing the Kinect and the Eyetoy.

Oh, and I still have my day 1 PS2, still runs perfectly, not to mention the odd 100+ legit games I bought for it.
PS2 was the highlight of my gaming life, sadly the PS3, 360 nor Wii has offered such an experience again. :/
Legit game. Why the hell do you say LEGIT GAMES instead of just GAMES. I smell Piracy here.

Actually that 2nd article is wrong, the PS2 is not the first console that works on it's side. Any cartridge system could work on it's side, you could play the gameboy on it's side!

OT: PS2 is certainly a great system, I take no sides as usual with systems but it does play more games that I like than other systems. Final Fantasy Tactics? Hell yes.
What system was designed to also be played on it's side then? And I really REALLY doubt a HANDHELD is comparable to a stationary console.

1: No... it the dreamcast that did online first. It was launch month before the announcement of the PS2.
2: As for CD drive, you didn't know there was a precursor to the PS2? Also, Sega stole that spot with the Sega-CD. Then, Nintendo developed a partnership with Sony for a Add-on to the SNES so it could work with CD. When they broke up, Sony developed the PS1. Funny isn't it?

Hey, you could play any handheld console upside down. Hell, you could place your NES on the side too. Or Upside down. In fact, my GAMECUBE is on his side, it's more gansta that way.

I thought this article was about the PS2, not the Dreamcast.

But I digress: yes, the PS2 had many great games. So did the Xbox. So did the Gamecube. So has every other game system ever. Okay, not all of them had many, but all of them had at least one or two.

If it weren't for the DVD capability, the PS2 would have been dead in the water, just like the PS3 would have been dead in the water were it not for the Blu-ray capability. People bought them and the great games came later; not the other way around, as Sony would have you believe. Sure, the PS2 has left behind a fine legacy and the PS3 will as well, but let's not pretend that it games aren't exactly the reason why so many people snatched either system up.
In regards to games, yes every console has great games, but the ps2 beat the xbox and the gamecube in quantity and quality. By that i mean ps2 not only had a lot of games but a lot of good games. Ps2 probably does owe a bit of its sales to DVD capability, captured some casuals, but the ps3 dead in the water if not for blu-rayand ps2 dead without DVD? Thats utterly ridiculous. Sony had great first party titles as well. When people buy a console early on its usually not because of games your right, they buy with the promise of good games or simply because it looks cool, but its games that allowed it to keep selling. Saying that Playstation would be dead without dvd and blu-ray is just ridiculous. Ps2 had more games than the xbox, and more than the gamecube. Nothing wrong with giving it credit for being a great console.

Then why the need to had LEGIT before game. Shouldn't you just say game? It's like asking someone not to think about the color red, you know that's all they gonna think about.

I am wondering if the amount of consoles sold is accurate. Like people have problems with RROD and Microsoft (though not as hardcore), I and many friends had to go through a few PS2s. I went through three in my first day because I could not for the life of me get one to work. The first would not accept games, the second had a game tray that popped out completely and detached from the console, and the third refused to believe that controllers could work.

That and, what everyone else said, some of those other statements are inaccurate.

I can agree, though, that the PS and PS2 changed gaming from party fun to all cut scenes and drama. Sidescrolling Mario and Sonic to FF12 and GTA3.

On the by, I like the PS2 =D

Dammit, beat me to it.

Anyway, props to the PS2. It brought me many of my current-favorite games.

Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Grand Theft Auto Vice City(it was my favorite), Maximo, Okami, Prince Of Persia, and many, many more.

Because saying "I have around 100+ games for my PS2" sounds like I pirate even more, namely with mod chips being as popular as they were for PS2.

Forget designed to do so, any cartridge system you could nail to a wall and it would work the same because there's no moving parts. Hell my friends NES was sideways next to his TV way back when and it worked perfectly.

I see. Still I'll just point to the games library. I think PS2 had the best exclusives for that generation, and now I think 360 does.

PC ftw vs both though.
